Ritchie69 and every one else thank you for all the info. Before I go out to buy, the best solution is the NFHK SSD adaptor and a Hynix BC511, right?

Sure not to get the adaptor with added resistors? Also, it is very hard to find this SSD where I live, will have to look out on 3rd party sellers or import. I still have the original Apple SSD installed but it is malfunctioning regularly; reboots especially with battery below 70%, folder icon, green glitched out screen. Glad this model has a replaceable SSD as the logic board is super clean and dry.

Seeing some improvement with the original Apple SSD using the following settings, found earlier in the thread (saying this, the MacBook has restarted since I started typing this reply):

sudo pmset -b sleep 10 disksleep 5 hibernatemode 25 autopoweroff 0 standbydelaylow 300 standbydelayhigh 300

Hi there,

This is just an update for everyone after 3 months of use with the Sabrent 1TB 2242 and the sintech adapter.

If you want my opinion dont do it lol.

My battery life is absolutely shot, the macbook will run for about 2 hours when its not on a power supply, and it will drain just as fast when in standby. It has become super unreliable and slow and I am going to have to put back in the original hard drive. Im so disappointed with the whole thing.

Any suggestions on anything i could do before returning to the original 128gb hard drive would be greatly appreciated.

Wilff, at the moment I’m using the adaptor with the resistor paired with the Hynix bc511, and seems to work flawlessly for now, I also tested the Hynix with the NFHK and works the same. keep in mind that the adaptor with the resistors accept only one sided ssd, so you’ll not be able to use it with the sabrent.

i used the sabrent for about a month before installing the hynix, but honestly, apart from the question mark issue, i had no battery drain issue.

I am using this adapter with the sabrent 512GB. I installed Big Sur and experienced the same low write speeds at first as some others in this thread. However, after some days now, I get around 1480r/1320w. The only problem I have so far is battery life. It could be that my battery is not the best anymore, but it going down by 20% from a full 100% over night is a but much I think. When in use, i cannot tell if the battery performs worse than with the apple ssd. I tried to install the nvmefix kext, but could not get it work yet. The mac just enters a bootloop with the kext installed. Has anyone got it to work?

The sabrent seems to suffer of throttling, I've used the 1tb size and the speed performance going from the lowest results of 470w/1550r to the higher results of 1500w/1900r. it depends from the cache as stated form other people here in the forum. with the Hynix the results are more stable at 1000w/1600r.

Due to the battery drain comments on this forum i decided to do a little experiment before replacing my ssd and found that with stock SSD my battery drains about 22% in 24 hours.
My system is Macbook i5 2017 model with 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD running MacOS Big Sur.

So anyway, I bought 2280 size WD SN550 512GB SSD since it only has flash memory on one side and is pretty thin. But it turns out no matter how thin your ssd is, if it is 2280 size the bottom is gonna bulge out a little. (I also removed the mount bracket on the adapter itself.)
Since I am paranoid that this could hurt the main board and ssd itself, I decided to return this ssd and buy a Hynix bc511 256GB on ebay for about $50 (pretty sweet price if you ask me).
(Thank you ritchie69 for the sugession)
I don't need that much storage anyway.
Will report back when that ssd arrives.

PS. The "no ssd found if the charger is plugged" issue also occurs on WD SN550

hi falcon78, I think you did well, in my experience the Hynix is the only that works flawlessly, let me know how it works.

Any news about this ssd

@ritchie69 I have the same problem. I installed the Sabrent 1tb with an adaptor about a month ago. At the start it was great, but now the write speed is down to about 400mbp/s... do you think it worth sending it back and getting the Hynix? Also, does the adaptor make much of a difference?
I'd be interested to know if you have any ideas on how to tackle the battery drain.
Thanks a lot for your reply.

I think I have found a solution to the power issues, none of which are related to the adaptor make or the specific ssd.

The issues stem from the Apple ssd drivers not set up to deal with third party ssd control protocols and all that is needed is a couple of ingenious system extensions that patch the apple drivers on the fly.

NVMeFix is a set of patches for the Apple NVMe storage driver, IONVMeFamily. Its goal is to improve compatibility with non-Apple SSDs. It may be used both on Apple and non-Apple computers.

The following features are implemented:
Autonomous Power State Transition to reduce idle power consumption of the controller.
Host-driver active power state management.

NVMeFix is a kext (system extension) developed out of the Hackintosh community and requires the Lilu kext installed first.
Read this to find out how to install kexts kexts (system dependent) on your MacBook, either in the library/extensions folder (Mojave) or using a boot loader for Catalina, all of which is explained in detail in the link provided.

I have installed an Adata SX6000 1TB, having first cloned my old system to the SX6000 on another machine.
Days later I can report no wake from sleep issues, no battery drain, no missing ssd.

I am on Mojave and simply used the Kext beast utility to install into the library extensions folder , and then ran the Kext utility to repair library permissions.

love to hear if this fixes things for anyone else.
Could you send me link how to install this NVMeFix please? Perhaps there is a video tutorial somewhere?
thanks a lot.

Hi baselcj, the Hynix seems to be more reliable and stable in terms of speed performance, also it doesn’t have the question mark folder issue, but in everyday‘s use it’s impossible to notice any speed differences from the two ssd’s, so it’s your decision to keep the sabrent or send it back...keep in mind that the Hynix is 512gb at his maximum storage, also hard to find ‘cause it’s an oem product.

Thanks alot ritchie69. I'm still having problems with the sabrent write speed, not dsure whether i should just send it back or not...any advice most welcome.
I also tried a Samsung Evo 970, but it drained the battery drastically, what would you do?

I think that every non apple ssd drain the battery faster than the original ssd. in my experience the hynix and the sabrent have the same, more or less, battery drain. about the speed performance, I found that the Hynix is more reliable than the sabrent, so I returned the sabrent and now I'm using stably the Hynix.

I need your advice on what SSD I can use. This SSD 2280 seems to have very good speeds and a really good price. Can it work on our A1708?

The main issue is that it is a 2280 and not a 2242 which means that it does not really fit, though it can be shoehorned in, it is in no way an ideal solution. I have a Sabrent 2242 running with no issues, though now the consensus seems to be that the Hynix may be slightly better. A 2280 will probably be cheaper, but I would not take the risk of forcing in a 2280 for a small price difference.

Thank you very much for your help. Finally I will use a 2242 and this adapter:

NEW A1708 SSD Adapter NVMe

I have one question:

Is it possible to take advantage of the SSD we disassembled from the Macbook Pro and use it in an SSD case?

I’m use the same adapter as yours, paired with the Hynix...it seems that there’s no external case yet for the oem Apple ssd, not at moment, as far as I know...

I just received adapters I ordered a while ago on AliExpress, but it seems like I'm to dumb to figure out how the NFHK one with the cutout is supposed to work. The female brass spacer has a way larger diameter than the both cutouts for it, so I really don't know how to securely attach it to the adapter. It is possible to put the SSD cutout into the slot of the spacer and counter it with the screw on the other side of the adapter, but then the SSD and the adapter will bend because there is a height difference between the NGFF slot and the mounting point. However, the product images show that the screw secures the SSD on the top of the adapter, so it must be possible somehow. Does anyone perhaps have an idea?

hi falcon78, I think you did well, in my experience the Hynix is the only that works flawlessly, let me know how it works.

I received my SK hynix BC511 (2230) and been using it on my macbook pro 13 for about 10 days or so. Everything seems to be working perfectly. I have no battery drain issue during sleep, I don't have the issue when booting while charging causes the system to not detect the ssd. Like I haven't experienced a single malfunction or anything like that.

I am really glad that I bought this sdd. Thanks for the recommendation ritchie69 !

I'll second that, I also ended up getting the SK hynix BC511 and in combination with the unbranded adapter with the capacitors everything works great with no issues at all.

Thanks you guys i also ordered 2 of Sk Hynix BC511 256gb from Ebay.

I currently have the Sabrent Rocket Nano installed but I have a problem with booting. When i turn it on, the famous question mark appears.

I also have a problem with charging. When I disconnect the charging cable and reconnect the cable, I hear the "poom" sound that the cable was connected. But sometimes it begins to not recognize it. So I have to do the SMC reset every so often and it solves. :(

When i receive my BC511 i'll do update.

you guys are very wonderful people.;)

Has anyone found an enclosure/adapter to connect an original 22 + 34 PIN 128 GB SSD from a A1708 model MacBook Pro as an external disk via USB? I have a 2017 A1708 that is completely bricked, no indication what so ever of being able to power it on. I am going to remove the SSD and hopefully do some data recovery via USB but need an enclosure/adapter to be able to connect it?
hey there, did you ever find an enclosure? Thanks

It's new SSD. I was hoping to install the OS through the macOS Recovery utility.

I received an external enclosure today. When I connect the SSD via the enclosure it is visible to Mac and I was able to format the drive exFat to mac os extended journaled format. Then connected and restart the Mac with the new SSD once again. Disk Utility once again failed to identify the SSD.

So now I'm thinking the issue could be because of the connector I received. I am going to order NFHK adapter from aliexpress and see if that will resolve the issue
can you please share what enclousure you found for the SSD. Thanks
