I liked it. Yes it's all over the place like the reviews out there say, but honestly, the reviews are all over the place too -- some even can't tell apart Gaal and Salvor, Terminus and Trantor, and the 3 clone emperors.
It's amazing how many people can't follow the subtle plot points or have patience for details to playoff in a story like this. The plot almost needs to advance via someone screwing and/or killing someone else at least once an episode if you want people to actually follow the story. I'm sure it is a side effect that our society rarely reads for pleasure any more, and then even less fiction.

Raych and Gaal? Yeah, so cringe and unnecessary.
I wish they would not have put element in there. We picked this to watch as a family and the kids wanted assurances there would be no kissing or sex and my husband, as someone who has read almost everything Asimov has written, said there would not be, because Asimov didn’t put that into his books.

We’re not prudes and the kids are teens and we all watch Ted Lasso which is cruder and definitely has sex scenes. But for some reason, those aren’t so cringe. They’re mercifully brief and mostly funny and most importantly, flow with the story telling.

But in this setting, the romance stuff was just a tedious sidetrack. So the kids asked us to fast forward past all the making out, because who wants to watch that stuff with your old mom and dad in the room/with your kids in the room? And we were all surprised how much there was to fast forward through. That’s a lot of time taken up for make out scenes that could have gone to storytelling. Blechhh.

(It did not help that Gaal looks almost underage to us, but Raych definitely looks like an adult).

My husband read all the books, but when I ask him about different things that are going on or about characters, he seems a bit lost. So I’m going to take it as a sign that this whole thing is “loosely inspired by” rather than a faithful retelling of the original material.

That’s fine, it’s all great to watch, minus all the kissing and butt grabbing or whatever it was we zipped past.

I have no desire to read the Foundation series, but oddly enough, I’m feeling nostalgic for other Asimov stories I’ve read. There was one that reminded me of this Covid era, where people have become so germaphobic they live completely isolated and only interact via video calls. I think it would be interesting to revisit that with the perspective I have now

I love Lee Pace and Terrence Mann. I almost didn’t recognize Terrence Mann. I can’t believe the hot alien guy in Critters is now the eldest of the 3 iterations of Empire. I feel so old now.

I wish I had Lee Pace’s height so I could be as intimidating stalking around in an armored blue dress. 😆

I can’t wait for the next one. I am glad I can accept it as it is and not feel the weight of expectation from the books against it.

It's been shown already since episode 1 that Anacreon loves hunting and bows, as evidenced by the hunting song (about a boy's first time...) and the gift of a bow to the emperors.
👍

I remember it now 😀. At the time I thought its the souvenir from ancient treasure, like Egyptian diplomats might bring mini pyramid as a souvenir something like that ha ha.

I did not watch any trailers, I read the books like 15 years ago and had an idea about the story and have the books still. But as i had commented when the talk that apple tv would be producing this a while back - i was like..pls dont screw it up! plsss...

Though my memory is fuzzy on the storyline, I did enjoy the pilot and was trying to connect it to what I knew but in the books, and it was ok and visuals were great and i was surprised on the good casting. I just hope it does fall into the category of "filler" episodes etc and side track too much on some romance or political thread. We shall see.
So far, it's not in my top scifi show openers out there - ( raised by wolves takes that spot) so just taking this one episode at a time and not over think it.

I’ve heard of the author obviously but have not read any of his stuff. Would this be a good show for someone who hasn’t read the books? I like science fiction movies and the trailers looked cool. Thanks

as someone who has read almost everything Asimov has written, said there would not be, because Asimov didn’t put that into his books.
Not in the classic books from the 1950s, but in the later books - including Foundation prequels/sequels, Asimov somehow felt obliged to throw in the regulation snogging and bonking...

“The Naked Sun” - which later Asimov books retconned into being part of the Foundation backstory (one of the characters has already turned up in the show... sort of). Which is one reason why I‘m prepared to give the show a bit of slack when it comes to messing with the story - it had already been extensively messed with.

I have not read the books, and am enjoying this series immensely. I love that it makes me think. Yes, it can be confusing if you're not paying attention, but it's worth the extra effort. Just realize that this is not a 'casual' show where you can multi-task while watching and still follow along. This requires you to watch, listen, and think a little.

Great. It looks like it has the production quality of a high budget movie.

Yes, IMO. If you liked Dune then you should get the same "alien worlds" vibe. Dune was also by a well regarded SF author. Just enjoy the stories and the settings and don't listen to us pedants who have read all the books.

Ignorance is bliss as goes these film adaptations, though I am sure I have missed out on good book storytelling.

Yes, Yes and yes lol. I could never understand why people don't get that one is a movie and the other a book. There's so much more in a book including one's imagination and etc...I use to collect comics/Marvel but I don't expect the movies to be a carbon copy of the comics because that would be really difficult and expensive. https://www.marvel.com/comics/series/2023/infinity_gauntlet_1991
and comparing Endgame would be insane lol. However, Endgame as a movie was very good but no where near the comics. I'm like you as not wanting to read the books and have that expectation and like you, I can't wait  for the next one!!!!! and where did she go in the pod he put her in? why did he stab him? I forgot their names but :eek::eek:

I struggle with remembering the names, too. Usually I consult IMDb and get the names of the actors and the roles otherwise I can’t remember very well until several episodes have gone by. Especially with such a large cast and so much jumping around between past and present perspectives.

I never read comics so I was shocked when I read about the Marvel characters and how different they were from their movie versions. I am very glad they changed things up because some of the storylines I read about in the comics didn’t sound as good or were too convoluted to translate well to the movie.

Anyway I got caught up to the most recent episode. Lol there was more kissing and butt grabbing to fast forward through, but at least this time the couple was a slightly more charismatic pairing.

I’m finding the Android lady, whose name I can’t spell or pronounce yet, fascinating. But I’ve always been fascinated by robots and androids. It’s my interest in them that drew me to Isaac Asimov in the first place. She’s an interesting contrast to Cleon. Cleon is an ideal, embodied by a series of clones over time. The ideal is supposed to be the same and provide stability to mortal reign.

But Demerzal (just looked up the name) has actually been the same person through the reigns of all these Cleon clones.

Lol I just realized Cleon is an anagram of “clone”. Derp! And she’s an Android. So presumably she’s unchanging and the real source of stability here. But I wonder if living through the atrocities of the current Cleon/Brother Day in episode 1 is changing her mind in ways we haven’t seen yet. He’s an arrogant cruel psycho so I’m sure if she’s ever had any preferences, he’s not a favorite.

Does anyone here play Sims? The Vault looks suspiciously like the Sims plumb bob that hangs over the active Sim’s head! Lol

Watched the episode 3: nice and quite entertaining but the deviation from the original story is definitely getting wider.

Love the jumping around in time periods in each episode to shorten those time frames.

You never read comics!!! eh excuse me for a second :eek::eek:

It might have been too convoluted to make a movie and the special effects would have to be something never seen before.

Lol, charismatic or more PG? I can understand the discomfort level with the kids around, lol.

Never crossed my mind about Cleon's name. Thanks. I'm hoping she has something up her sleeve for the future.

Nope. I read a few Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics I got free somehow as an adult. But a kid growing up in the grungy hippy dippy inflationary 1970’sin a neighborhood of duplexes more spare than trailer homes are nowadays, I just read the comics in the newspaper.

Basically I lived on a street where we kids’ families were so broke we would just put all our toys together in a pile in one kid’s covered porch and share. Our moms did similar with our clothes and shoes. There wasn’t a concept of “my toys”. Just go to the pile and get whatever you want to play with for the day. It was mostly boys on my street, so that’s partly how I ended up a tomboy!

Anyway, nobody put comics into the pile so I didn’t read any. I didn’t know anybody who read comics.

It just never occurred to me to want to read comics because I’d never seen any, though my dad spoke of reading them as a kid in the 1950’s. I don’t even know where they might have been sold when I was growing up.

I guess I missed out, huh? I know people now who grew up reading them and they sound like they got transported to a magical world.

Getting back to the show, I don’t know if the second couple is more PG because we fast forwarded past the love scenes. But I just think they’re better matched.

It was tough watching Raych and Gaal because we all thought Gaal was only 16. The actress just looks so young! She was carrying herself with a demeanor that was very young, too. Also we didn’t see how they progressed into a romantic relationship. It was just boom! There it is!

At least with the second couple, it’s indicated they were continuing a pre-existing relationship and both parties appear as adults

I’m going to assume there’s a plot driven reason for the relationship. Unless we are all mistaken, Gaal and Raych had an embryo that was stored. Surely that offspring will have some part to play in the story.

I’m also going to assume there’s some significance to Brother Dusk/Dark’s remarks that something isn’t right about the baby who is now Brother Dawn.

I can’t wait to see what happens next. I’m also following all the Marvel shows on Disney. We also went back and watched Agent Carter. Next we will back fill and watch Agents of Shield.

was Salvor Hardin conceived on the ship on the 4 year journey to Terminus and then stored in the seed bank or was she born after they landed and setup their outpost?

I’m not really sure. I think her mother wasn’t pregnant when we saw her before going on the ship so Salvor was probably a seed bank baby. She’s a lot older than the kids running around now, who were probably conceived or implanted from the bank after the settlements were made.

with her strange connection to the Vault maybe she's not even the biological child of those two?...maybe she's native to Terminus?

I'm disappointed we won't be hearing "bawbawous" and the rest of Lord Dorwin's accent o_O
