Question from a noob

I have noticed that so far this year they have released 2 "New music Samplers" that contained like 16 songs each. There was 1 in Jan and 1 in Feb but since then they have not had any. Is there any regularity to these kinds of deals or are they just random?

Your guess is as good as mine. It certainly looked like a pattern, with the first two samplers each coming out on the Friday closest to the 10th of the month in January and February. So I expected to see a third one March 11th, but nothing was released, as far as I know. Keep in mind, however, that the samplers are not linked to from the main page in the iTunes Music Store, so I rely on forum members to report when one comes out.

Another mystery: Why don't the "Catch of the Week" songs come out weekly?

At least the Street Official Mixtapes have a fairly regular pattern:
Volume 1: Tue Nov 02
Volume 2: Tue Dec 07
Volume 3: Tue Jan 11
Volume 4: Fri Feb 11
Volume 5: Tue Mar 15
Volume 6: Tue Apr 05

I know when I bought my iPod shuffle iTunes detected it was a "virgin" iPod and brought be straight to the new music sampler... so maybe they update it when new iPods come out or something of that nature?

If you or somebody else would like to volunteer to maintain a list of free Canadian iTMS tunes, like the U.S. and U.K. versions in this thread, please PM me.

I would but I'm going away to Europe over the summer. On a happier note, Happiness Runs appears to be free to Canadians too. And on a less happy note, apparently some of us already missed one, namely Opal's Blues by The Be Good Tanyas.

Free Canadian Tunes!

Well it looks like Apple finally opened up iTMS Canada to give away free music. So I volunteered to keep track of it here. This list will be run just like the very first post in this thread by Doctor Q. I'll try to keep finding new free tunes, but if you see any not on the list, please post and I'll update. The date listed is the date reported to be free.

Has anybody seen signs of a new iTunes New Music Sampler? By my reckoning, we're due for another one. Apple doesn't post links to these Samplers on the iTunes Music Store home page so I hope somebody who runs into the next Sampler will let us know.

As of today, there are still only the two samplers. You can get to the 'new iPod' page here.

Apple Store iTunes playlist

I shop at several Apple Stores in various cities near us, and I noticed that they all have the same playlist on the iPods every time. This playlist also appears on the iTunes programs on the displays Macs. Does anyone have a list of these songs? I am just curious what these songs are (I remember Alan Jackson's 5 O'clock Somewhere, and an Alison Krauss song, etc.).

Where can we get a list of these songs?

Thanks very much, if you have any information. This is probably the wrong forum for this, but all of us love iTunes very much, and I thought someone might know.

Maybe there is an iMix of what you are looking for on the iTunes Music Store. Go to iTMS and click iMix, on the left side menu, then type in "Apple Store" or something similar in the iMix search field, which is different than the Music Store search field.

I just did that and the search returned twenty-two iMixes referencing "Apple Store." So I think you have a good chance of finding what you want in an iMix on the iTunes Music Store. Plus you can preview listen to the songs from the iMix! Really cool.

Well, the free song on the UK iTMS surprised me this week - Silicone Soul's '[playlistId=48606547&selectedItemId=48606543]Burning Sands[/playlistId]'. They're signed to a small independent Scottish label, Soma Records, for whom I do tech support & develop their website (where you can buy MP3s & FLACs </plug>). I've often jokingly said they should get something on the front page, but never quite thought they would manage it.

I'll be interested to see the sales figures for it - how much a difference being on the front page actually makes.

FYI, "Blow it Out" is redundant with the Motown Sampler.

I'm still downoading it for my "collection"... plus the pretty album art :)

Thanks, I noted that in the list. It's not the first time they have done this. All of these tunes have made an appearance as a free tune separate from their sampler:

"All at Sea" - Universal Motown Sampler

"Gotta Get Up from Here" - Atlantic/Lava Sampler

"Jus Anotha Shorty" - Universal Motown Sampler

"Sleeping With the Lights On" - Universal Motown Sampler

Those free Song-of-the-Week downloads are rarely any good, I think. I've deleted all of them shortly after downloading them and listening to them once or twice. Wish they'd pick better stuff.

Trivial trivia

Today on the iTunes Music Store home page they are promoting new album [playListId=61206732]Beat Café[/playlistId] by ancient hippie Donovan. Today is his 59th birthday and one of his other albums is from 1965!

i loved Donovan when i was younger [still do]

one of my favorites was 'Mellow Yellow'

Has anybody listened to Street Official Mixtape, Vol. 7 yet? I'm wonder if it is really Electronic rather than Hip Hop/Rap.

Yes, I have. It is definitely Hip Hop/Rap, not Electronic. Another iTunes Music Store genre mistake!

I see the latest songs are now separated out on top of the list. Noted and appreciated :)

Clues show that today's free [playlistId=64387718&selectedItemId=64387722]Back 2 Basics[/playlistId] album will stay free and is not a weekly-only freebie. If you are interested in it, download it, but you probably don't need to hurry since it will probably remain free even after next Tuesday's Single of the Week and Discovery Download replace this week's pair.

This weeks free song, Different by Acceptance, I purchased about a month ago... its a really great song...
