I'm reviving this old thread.

I've never played freespace 2 before, but I'd like to try it. The question is... should I download the mac version, or should I run it in bootcamp? If there aren't any performance problems then I'd rather run it under OS X, but I wouldn't be surprised if the windows version was more up to date, and I don't know how well this will run in Rosetta.

Ditter on no probs. Used the installer, followed the instructions, even have my logitech JS plugged in and works great. Small graphics glitch at the menu but from what I read it's known and just hasn't been fixed yet.

Other than that, lovin it.

Anyone else having crashing problems?

I just did the open install and it looked like everything went to the right folder. Launched it from FS2_Open 3.6.9 and also tried the Debug version.

Opening video works then when I get to the pilot login then the whole computer locks up. Can't seem to get past that.

Funny, I just started getting crashing problems...

Every once in a while the game will just lock up hard, not even force-quit works! Have to use the power button to reboot my Mac.

Can't seem to find anything regarding the crash using Console. Am I missing something a debug output switch or something?

I'm running FS2_Open 3.6.9 and Launcher 3.0.1.

Wow!!!

First time seeing this post and man am I excited. I played the heck out of the first Freespace on my pc and still have the USB joystick to play it with!! I know what I'm doing when I get home. :D:D:D

Summary of my problems

Well, before I updated to Leopard, I had three problems, from least annoying to most annoying:

1) Moving the mouse too far to the right in the mission briefing screens caused the game to hang for ~30 seconds.
2) Sometimes, while playing the game (as in flying around) the game would hang for about ~30 seconds, possibly triggered by some explosions, but very annoying.
3) In a few specific levels, the game will simply freeze the entire system, requiring a force restart.

After moving to Leopard, the game is now even more unstable. Sometimes when scrolling through missiles on the customisation screen the system will completely lock up. This has also happened to me after finishing a level, and trying to accept the outcome (as opposed to replay).

Shall try running through the debug version, and see if it helps. But any help, or anyone having similar problems, let me know!

Right, FS2 just crashed on me twice in a row. Both times requiring the Power Button to get my Mac back!

I'm at the level where the Player plays as a covert NTF fighter for the first time. The level starts off with the objective "Scan Iceni".

Any ideas what's causing the crash? I'm guessing a memory leak somewhere...

:(
I have different problem - keyboard does not work (instead of Fx keys, F1 and F2 at least). I'm unable to enter callsign. While I can create new callsign on windows PC and move it to Mac laptop then I'm unable to do somethig inside mission but only fire primary weapon (thanks to Ctrl key).
My config:
Intel MacBook Pro 15"
2 GB RAM
NVidia graphics
MacOS X 10.5.2
FS2_Open installed by Installer
+ Launcher 3.0.3b
+ FS2_Open_rev4618_0506 to override "freeze in right and bottom"

Mayday! Mayday!
Need coverage by elite MacOS pilot!

It's not Freespace 2, but it is BASED on it... Battlestar Galactica: Beyond the Red Line might be worth a look. It certainly runs on OS X (and Intel) so hopefully it's fine in 10.5.3.

(Game contains spoilers for season 2.)

Although 3.6.9 is the most recent public release, there are other releases that have happened since then, internally. And they are all available at http://hard-light.net/forums/ . 3.6.10 will not be long..

Really, really hoping that 3.6.10 unbreaks FS2 with Leopard, and fixes the other problems I've outline before, as well as being prettier, and running better. And that what you say is true: May it be released soon.

I am running the 3.6.10 beta, and it runs pretty smoothly. But on some of the later missions in campaign mode, it still crashes. Other than that it seems to run beautifully.

Yes. I played through the campaign on 10.5.2, not sure if there will be any change to the newly released 10.5.3

Awesome. That's good to hear.

Let's hope Soulstorm's "soon" was weeks, and not months. And that they iron out those last few bugs.

@mckyvlle: Maybe running this game on integrated graphics is not such a good idea...

macbook pro here (10.5.2), did the 3.6.9 install and it freezes. seems to be a time based thing (so many seconds on the main screen)

how did you get 3.6.10 beta?

(oh and anyone figure out how to fix it?)

help problem with freesapce 2

HELLO,
oops sorry for the caps. But i just installed freespace 2 installer for max os x. I started the tutorial and everything seemed to be fine but when i targeted the drones the lower left area information on the drone was ALL green and the graphic wasn't showing up for the drone itself. I went ot the campaign and this also was the case with one or two of the friendly ships but many of hte other ships seemed to be fine. Does anyone know what the grahpic problem here is, and how to fix it?

I just installed this for OS X (I have a Macbook pro) but cannot get the touchpad to work as a controller. It says pitch is bound to mouse y axis, but when I move the touchpad nothing happens. Any ideas on what's wrong?

Well, it is now officially months...

...and months...

I'll give you a hint. Seriously, forget the trackpad, and just use the keyboard. I use [pl;'] to control pitch and yaw, o[ for roll, with "return" being conveniently placed for missile launch, and lots of other close-by keys. Works great.

Indeed, months have passed, but I believe that FS2_Open is still under active development. I stopped playing, though. After so many times finishing the game I got bored at some point. All I do is to fix things for the Launcher and apart from that, I have other projects.

However, There is a new stable build out. Have you tried that? I have, and it seems to have gotten rid of that horrible bug with ATI cards.

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,44374.0.html

Download the latest stable build (not 3.6.9) and see what happens... And remember: It's good to visit Hard Light forums if you have questions...

OK, I downloaded the new stable build, but not the Media VPs (my internet is ****, and downloading a gig of files isn't doable) and for what I saw by playing the final mission, it was fantastic. Game didn't freeze or hang, even when moving the mouse to the far right, although I didn't get a chance to test the missile problems, but I'm sure they are fixed too.

And why would I post on Hard-Light when I can post here and get answers from you, which is far more convenient? :p

EDIT: Wow, first time I've noticed the automatic profanity bleeping!
