I feel like i'm walking into the lion's den like this, but since the hardlight forums are no more (dead?) and I have a fairly simple question, hopefully someone can help :/

Can't respond--too busy sharpening my Winuser Hunting Spear. :D

If I knew the answer I'd tell you, but there are plenty of extraordinarily knowledgeable and friendly people here who should be able to help. But first, you should probably do your penance and say three Hail Macs.

last night, i decided to go and install it again. but alas, my cutscenes are dead :O

I have the xvid, divx, and mve ones, but i only have half of the mve ones (I only have 4 out of the 10 for some reason).
Support for XviD and DivX was ripped out right after the 3.6.9 release. Instead we only support MVE and Theora movies now, since those two work great on all platforms (as XviD and DivX were Windows only). You can get the Theora versions of the movies from the HLP forums (sorry, don't have the actual links handy, but a search should turn them up).

The Theora versions were converted by me from the original MVEs. They had some basic enhancements done, but not to a great extent.

The only thing of note is that neither MVE nor Theora movies (Theora in particular) will work in Direct3D mode now. But, since we have also dropped support for Direct3D, that really shouldn't be a big deal. :)

Yes, they are dead atm, but I hope they resurrect soon, since I want to post about updates in the OS X Launcher.

Actually, I have a new version of the Launcher for OS X ready, with multiple standalone mod support. Code has been completely rewritten, so until this thing gets testes by more people (you, guys!) I can't make it final, so the "Check For Updates.." button will not show version 2.0 of the launcher.

Official stable version is 1.1.4, but you can have the latest one here. Also, its readme has been also changed, and it introduces a number of bug fixes over 1.1.4. The application works for me just fine so far, without any problems, but I want more people to see it.

Please check it out and send me bug reports and recommendations.

Halp

So, I downloaded FS2 for Mac a few days ago off VersionTracker, and have been generally impressed with it.

However, I have a nagging problem. After I have viewed the briefing for a mission, and selected my ship and weaponry, I click the commit button. However, the game crashes immediately.

It started out as an intermittent thing, but it's become a constant. Right now I'm on the mission titled "Bearbait", and have attempted to start it around 20 times. Usually when I've had this bug on other missions, the game has given in within a few attempts.

What really annoys me is that the game has already let me play the mission twice. It started doing this again on the first attempt.

I've tried everything mentioned in this thread that might help me, including running System Optimizer X, updating my actual game application to the latest version, and running in debug mode. Nothing has worked.

I'm on an Apple MacBook 13" 1.83GHz Core Duo with 512mb RAM and an Intel G950 Integrated GPU.

Any help that anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. :D

VersionTracker has an old version of FS2_Open. Please use the latest version and post back if you have problems.

The newest version of FS2_Open also needs a new version of media_vp packs. Use the FS2_Open Installer to download and install everything and be up to date.

Well, I downloaded Freespace 2 last night on my 2.2 MBP, but there is no sound. I played the training missions through with no problems, graphics look great, but there is no sound whatsoever.
I used the installer app.

EDIT: I'm a Dolt. Clicked "nosound" and "nomusic" in the launcher...
Trying again now...
Works great... Feel really stupid right now...

two questions, first i downloaded this onto my mbp 2.2 and it worked ok, can i optimize it to 1400x900 or intel or something, im pretty confused on how to make it look better, with the .vp files. also, how do you control this thing, it is looking for a number pad to fly it but there isnt one on my keyboard obviosuly, how are you people doing it? thanks

Did you use the installer? Worked great for me.
You need to go in game, and change the keys. Click the key you want to change, press "bind", and then press the key you want that function to bind to.

I now have a problem, was messing around trying to get the freespace 1 port to work, but the ship models don't appear in the game, neither do weapons, etc. and I'm stuck at low resolutions (sparky_hi_fs1 is there). Now, when I tried to go back to Freespace 2, which was working perfectly (high res, everything) there are still no ship models, and the resolution refuses to go high. This is despite it working before, the sparky_hi_fs2 file existing, and using the OSX launcher to confirm that the resolution is set to 1440x900.

I figure the two problems are the same problem, and it's probably something small.

Any help?

Ships back. Don't know what happened. Res might still be low though.

Erasmus, about the resolution:

You said you used the launcher to confirm if resolution is what it should be. Can you also do this manually?

Go into your user's library and look for a folder named "FS2_Open". Open it, and please post the contents of the "FS2_Open.ini" file that is contained in there. If this is a Launcher problem, then I will have to take a look at it. If not, we are going to do something else to solve the problem.

And please tell me which version of the Launcher you are using.

Thanks Soulstorm.

The contents are:

[Default]
VideocardFs2open=OGL -(1440x900)x32 bit
LastPlayer=ErasmusS

[PXO]
FS2OpenPXO=0
Login=
Password=
SquadName=
OGL_AnisotropicFilter=16.0
TextureFilter=1

I'm using Launcher 2.0.1

It seems as if the problem has fixed itself. Not a clue as to what happened. Here's a screenshot, maybe you can confirm whether the resolution is 1440x900 or something lower, and whether the colours are 32 bit or only 16?

Is there anything else I need to get the freespace port working properly that is not listed in the Launcher, and to run it, do I have to change the selected mod in the Launcher to fsport, open the game, and select the freespace campaign from behind the campaign "blast door"? Anything else I need to do?

That's a straight screenshot, and so I suppose I'm wondering if the nebulas always look that crap with the visible crosshatched appearance and stepped colour gradients.

That's not the end of the game. Far from it. Normally, the Colossus should appear and be destroyed, and the mission would end. How many times have you played the mission? What version of FS2_Open are you using?

It would also be helpful to post your command line.

I haven't been around for a while! I am using FS 2 Open 3.6.9. Debug. I've done the level a few times, should i not blow up the sanathas(sp)? Also, how do i access the command line code for a specific app like freespace? The graphics still suck even after adding all the codes in the launcher, they're very blocky and a lot of ships don't appear at all!! The nebulas are giant blocks to me!

thanks

Just a thought, but does anyone know if there are plans to add FSAA to FS2 in the near future? For example with 3.6.10?

@ Xandor...
Are the nebulas like the ones in the pic I posted above, or worse?

The command line for the game is located into a file in ~/Library/FS2_Open/data/cmdline_fso.cfg

The graphics suck because it is a problem with ATI's graphics cards, and not FS2_Open. I suppose you use one. I have the same problem, too. I believe the workaround will be released with the next FS2_Open. If you look at this thread, you will see that the problem has been mentioned a few times.

Been awhile

It has been awhile since I last posted, but I thought I'd just give some updates of my most recent experiences. I just re installed everything using the installer, and I have a couple of issues.

1) Freespace 1 campaign is no longer recognized. I am trying to start it as using the launcher. The folder for FSport contains only the mod.ini and the cutscenes. Is there another place to download fsport?

Other than that, it's all good. There are still a few graphics bugs, but I have been reading that there is an issue with the X1600 drivers.

Anyways, thanks for all the help. I am going to blow me up some shivans!

Way way way worse, they're giant blocks of random color, nothing nebula about them, looks like a bad cubist painting!

I don't seem to have an FS2_Open folder in my library, when i entered that file path into terminal, it said access denied. I think we have the same puter. How long till 3.6.10?

It was originally slated for 3.6.10, yes, but it's been put on hold due to problems with Windows. Yeah, who would have thought. :rolleyes:

The new code works fine for Linux and OSX (though it could be better), but it has a tendency to crash on Windows on successive launch attempts. Unfortunately, Windows needs the new code worse than the other two platforms, so it is holding everything up in this particular case. The new code on the Windows side specifically addresses Vista issues and problems with Intel graphics card error handling, which is why it's important to get all of those issues worked out.

But 3.6.10 is also delayed, with no current ETA, so it's likely I'll have a chance to work out the issues by the time it actually ships.

Regardless though, with all of the stuff that I'm packing into 3.6.10, you aren't really going to care all that much about FSAA once you have the new builds. :D

FS port

So, I installed the FS port mod using the installer. I have all of the voice and graphic files. However, I am still unable to see the FS ships. I am having a similar problem as one I had in FS 2 where I couldn't see the asteroids. Occasionally, asteroids would fly across the screen for a few milliseconds and be gone. This has happened when I put FS port on for the first time today. It's almost like it's trying to show the graphics, but something isn't allowing it. Here is a listing of commands I have on:
Spec, env, glow, jpgtga, mipmap, noscalevid, missilelighting, 3dwarp, warp flash, ambient factor 75.

I am running it at 1024x768 32 bit resolution. Everything that I am using was installed using the installer, and all files are up to date as of 2 weeks ago. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix this?

Thanks,
Ryan

FS missing ships

This is what I mean. I looked in the tech room as well, but the ships are missing from there as well. Currently playing it as a mod with all fsport files (vp's and such) in a folder.

A little clarity

I did a bit of troubleshooting on my own, and this is what I came up with. When I set the launcher to software rendering mode, I do ge the graphic for the apollo as long as the spec option is disabled. It looks like this:

Not too pretty. With the spec option enabled, you only get a partial graphic.

@InsomniaClown:
All of that looks related to the X1600 bug actually. I'm still not sure what the X1600 bug really is, but it's specific to that particular card, and only under OS X. Basically, it's some driver related problem. I don't have that card so I can't really do anything figure out what the cause might be. Several people have volunteered to debug it for me (us), but I haven't really heard anything back from any of them, so I have no idea what's going on.

I don't really have a suggestion for you except to simply wait and see. Hopefully Apple will get the driver bug(s) fixed, or someone with that hardware will be kind enough to debug it further so that I can code some sort of workaround into the code, or someone will just send me the hardware in question and I can work it out myself. Obviously that last option isn't going to happen, since no one in their right mind would send me a Mac just to figure this out. :) But, the first two are still possibilities. I have been told that the bug has been filed with Apple, but I'm not sure what the status of it might be at this point, or if enough information was provided for them to figure out the cause.
