ah i got the Mvmedia files installed, but i still get black boxes around those purple clouds in the beginning missions, and sometimes my lasers disappear, or my HUD greys out when i fire the prometheus laser. :confused:

also the first mission with the ion clouds, i hear audio (i press tab and i hear afterburners, where the guy says "iota wing, go" "alpha wing" etc...) but the screen is stuck on the mission briefing.

any solutions?

Please post your system settings and configuration. It would be of help. And run the debug version of the program. It will help understand the problem.

InsomniaClown, Download the Freespace 2 installer from the link I gave you above. It will also install mods like the original Freespace campaign.

But its okay, i caved and downloaded FS2 open for Windows. Works perfectly fine under Vista Ultimate with everything turned up and the media pack installed. I finished over 3/4 of the game in one sitting. :eek: I beat Descent Freespace: The Great War already too. Great storyline and great game.

Freepspace 2 got 9.6/10 on Gamespot just if anyone wanted to know.
 
Sorry if I missed the obvious but is there a place I can download the complete game in one disk image with no extra files?
 
wow, i beat the game in 2 days, in 2 sittings. Overall satisfying experience. :D

no, i dont have any classes today. :p i love thursdays. Easy mode is a little to easy though. Got double ace or whatever after 20 kills in a mission.
 
freespace 1 campaign

Alright, so I used the Fs_open installer, opened Freespace with the launcher (cool program by the way), and started the FS1 campaign. It works fine, but I am missing some ship graphic for the apollo and vasudan fighters. Is there another place to download FS1 graphics files?

What do you mean? There are no textures at all, or is it that the textures are not high-resolution? Can you post a screenshot?

That's strange, and we have the same graphics card installed. The game works fine for me. I don't have a clue of why this happens. Can you please post a new topic about this in Hard Light Forums? It seems that many people are having this problem.

I think that FS2_Open Installer also installs the original game content, am I right? I tried to verify what I am saying, but for some reason, the latest version of the installer does not work for me. Let me search the web for additional links.
 
When I open up the FS2_Open client, there is introduction music and a white screen. I hit escape, and the text for creating a pilot, single, multi appears over the white screen, but none of them work.

If that helps at all.

EDIT: The installer I was using was apperently slightly messed up. After reloading the installer, I'm seeing if there will be any difference.
 
freespace 1 campaign

Alright, So I went ahead and deleted all of the old files, and then re installed everything the old way (by downloading all of the individual files and compiling it all myself). I also went back to using your first command line editor soulstorm. This has gotten rid of the green screen, but I still have no fighter graphics. I have posted a forum onto Hardlight as well. Can you give me a list of every file I should have in order to play Freespace 1?

I am currently not playing it as a mod, I have just loaded all of the files into my Freespace folder.
 
Right, so I now have FS2 up and running (I think), mainly because the installer was messed up, and I fixed that.

However, I now cannot access FRED 2, any tips on how I can get it to work?

Can you give me a list of every file I should have in order to play Freespace 1?

Use the Launcher to enable the -jpgtga option, and tell me if the problem persists. And please post your command line.

Seraph, as far as I know the FRED application has not been ported to OS X yet. Let me check in order to see if there's any test build available..
 
Ah, thank you for that information. Otherwise I'd be trying to figure that out for quite a bit.
 
Hi all,

I have just installed FS2 Open using the installer. I managed to launch the game and complete the first training mission but now whenever I move the mouse over certain options e.g. Options, Commit etc, the cursor/game freezes and dissapears however the music keeps playing. Occasionally the you regain control of the mouse but as soon as you move it over another option it freezes again.

Te only thing I can do is keep pressing escape to try and quite tha game.

Any help would be appreciated.
 
Alright, So I went ahead and deleted all of the old files, and then re installed everything the old way (by downloading all of the individual files and compiling it all myself). Same thing here. You're probably using a mac with an ati x1600 graphics card (like the macbook pro). The problem is related to the card and there's no solution yet. :(

After freespace 2 was considered abandonware, it became legal to download the full game. At first it was Windows only, but after the source was released to the public, it has been upgraded (to the point that one may think it is a new game) and now it runs on linux and os x!

Some people will be bored to read the instructions scattered into the thread, so I edited this first post to reflect the changes that have happened the last 1,5 year:

Notes for d/l link 1: This will give you the original game CD's in ISO format. THere are two ways to install the original game: The first is to use Virtual PC. The second, is to follow these instructions (look at the middle of the page)
Notes for d/l link 2: This will give you a few kbytes java program that will install all the files necessary to play FS2_Open. I personally recommend that, as it will help you skip the next steps of the install process. It will also allow you to download the additional media vps content, and additional mods.

I really want to enjoy the game!
I feel I do not fully understand how all the pieces fit together, or what/where all the pieces are.

I have the java 26k installer. However after selecting a save location and hitting "next" I am presented with a blank screen. I can hit the "back" button and the"exit" button but the "next" button is grayed out. What am I doing wrong?

I also downloaded the 20mb FS2_Open 3.6.9 application. However it must need support files to run?

I'm just a little lost, and the 6 of 18 pages here I've read haven't been helpful to my problem so far :(

Edit: To save someone from asking, my OSX Firewall is off, and I am connected to the internet. I'm at work, which I presume has firewalls of some kind, however I have never experienced them blocking any applications, and I use a lot of "none work" applications here ;-)

If that was indeed a stupid question, then try clicking this link. If it doesn't load, then sectorgame is being blocked by your Firewall/ISP/whatever. If it loads, save the text file to the Installer folder and try running the Installer again. The Installer folder should have already been created in the same Directory as the java installer. Let me know how it goes.

I have indeed picked a save location, and hit Next.
This takes me to a screen with two check boxes, I selected the full install/install everything (the wording escapes me) and hit Next. The page after the two check boxes is blank. The loading bar at the bottom remains at 0%, and only the EXIT and PREVIOUS buttons are selectable.

And a bunch of text loads at that qebsite, is that what I'm supposed to see?
I went home and tried it on my modemm which has exactly zero firewalls and got the same thing. :(
 
Graphic issues

Hi everybody,
Im trying to get my graphics to look like the ones i've seen posted by some people.
But My ships are still very blurry. I got huge decals on the exhaust (logo which looks like a pirate of some sort, blue-ish star kind of).
My lasers got black boxes around it..

My ini file:

This is indeed what you are supposed to see, but you don't mention if you tried the thingie with the text file I said. The installer, when ran, creates a folder named Installer in the same directory as the application. Take the text file from the location I gave you, and save it into this directory. I had the same problem with you, and it was fixed this way. Try that and tell me what happens.

The iMac has the X1600 inside, doesn't it? It seems there are problems with those graphic cards on OS X, and that's not SCP's fault, it's a drivers issue.

BUT:
There is an option in your .ini file that drew my attention: GammaD3D=1.00

This is a Direct3D option. There is no Direct3D on OS X. Try disabling that and see what happens. Also, I assume that you have already downloaded all additional content in your computer (I mean the latest media VP's). Finally, I figured that you don't use the OS X Launcher for the game. Maybe you should try it. It will save you a lot of time.

I've solved it! Instead of the FS2_Open 3.6.9, i'm using the FS2_Open 3.6.9-RC7. And now everything looks spick-and-span!
I already used the latest launcher.

It's a known issue, but appears to be Mac specific. It's a problem with PBOs, that is used to save bits of the screen for clearing and reset. For some reason, as the cursor approaches the bottom of the screen, it will hang/crash.

I fixed this for BtRL by simply disabling PBO support on the Mac, but I would prefer to find a real solution to the problem. There is going to be a new test build, for 3.6.10, released for OS X later this week. It will contain the same fix that was in the modified BtRL build and hopefully that will work well enough for you. I'll let you know when the new build is available.

Correct, it seems to be specific to X1600 cards. I don't have such a card though, which makes it rather difficult to track down and fix the problem. I'm confident that it's a driver issue, but that doesn't mean that we can't code around it until it's officially fixed at the source.

Someone was going to look into the problem and help diagnose it, but I haven't ever heard back from him. If there are any programmers out there that wish to help, and have the hardware in question, then please let me know.

That option is used for both D3D and OpenGL actually, so there is no harm in having it there. D3D was using a different form of gamma correction than OpenGL did, and so the "GammaD3D" option was added since the values are different. I later went back and upgraded the OpenGL code to use a similar method of gamma setting but was stuck using the same option name in order to preserve D3D compatibility. I couldn't keep it the original name ("Gamma") since it would conflict with retail FS2 on Windows.

With 3.7 of FSO, it will change back to "Gamma" though, since the Windows version will stop using the registry to store it's settings at that point.

this is the last (believe me, i looked) place for FS2 help.

last night, i decided to go and install it again. but alas, my cutscenes are dead :O

I have the xvid, divx, and mve ones, but i only have half of the mve ones (I only have 4 out of the 10 for some reason).

I'd really like to watch the hi-quality xvid or divx ones, but can't figure out what is going wrong....it looks like, at some point, they dropped the divx support in favor of xvid, but i can't figure out if it's the launcher or the build...

anyways, i'm currently running Launcher 5.5c, and fs2_open_C05282007s.exe (the newest one that I could find).

When i start the game, i do see a green play icon (ya know, the triangle thingie ;)) in the upper left hand corner.

EDIT: So i'm not beat up extra-hard, I must mention that I'm running FS2 on my parent's mac downstairs (where my lil bro plays it), but I enjoy having my windows box upstairs in my room.
