Nope, but it EVGA has a driver DL section that you can lookup the product family, and select OSX as the operating system for the latest web driver. Kinda cool.

The driver on EVGA's site is old. It's 313.01.02f01, which I don't think will work with 10.9. We just have to wait.

After a couple of weeks of downtime (while I waited for the ruddy mini PCI-E to PCI cable to ship from eBay), the cable is finally in place and I'm live in 10.9 with a 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 and an EVGA 650 Ti 1GB SSC :).

Such a painless operation I'm shocked I didn't do this sooner. Yes, there is no boot screen but with the SSD, I don't even notice (and I don't run Windows in Bootcamp). I didn't have to install any drivers - just installed, turned on and my 5 yr old Mac is back in business! So pleased with this thing.

I'm still on Snow Leopard (Mac Pro 3,1) and want to upgrade to a GTX 570 or 560Ti. Do you recommend me going straight to Mavericks (free) or Mountain Lion ($20) prior to installing the new card? My concern is that the 10.8 drivers are better, at this point, than the 10.9 ones. Is there some consensus on this?

^^^^I've got a MVC flashed GTX 570 in the classifieds section, if interested PM me. I don't think Mavericks will install on SL. ( believe it needs ML to install.

Thanks, flowrider. I'll probably be fine with a regular PC card. I'm really just looking for a cheap used model to hold me over until I can afford a better more up to date card.

Hello,
looks like my GPU bit the bullet and I need a new one ASAP. I don't want anything fancy but it'd be nice to have something with some CUDA support and Displayport (but not that important). Kind of tight on cash too.

Some questions:
1. I am considering GTX650 because of good price. Is it worth getting the "Ti" version? I don't game that much really, CUDA cores would be helpful on occasional After Effects work but nothing super serious.

2. Which brands should I choose? I kinda like Gigabyte because of a good price and good experience but there are also brands like Zotac, MSI and Gainward.

3. What do you think of these two: GAINWARD GTX650 2GB DDR5 and GIGABYTE N650OC-1GI (on the low end).

4. Gaming aside, do I benefit from more NVRAM? I have only single 24" HD display and do some After Effects but it's mostly 2D compositing in standard definition, sometimes high definition. Also video editing in Premiere and such. It is not my work machine, I don't make money off of it so I don't mind that much to wait few more minutes to have my render finished. On the other hand since I'm buying a new one I'd like to have something better than I had so far (Ati Radeon HD5870 1GB).

Thanks for any answers. For your information, I run Mac Pro 4.1 and 10.9.0 Mavericks. That means the card should work out of the box, right?

^^^^The cables you have for the Radeon 5870 are are the correct six pin cables. See my post above about the MVC flashed Gigabyte GTX 570 I have listed in classified.

Thanks, so that's cool I don't have to get any new cables because those are expensive here. I'd take on your offer unfortunately shipping would be too much, I'm from outside US.

Anyone want to chime in on those two GTX650 or should I just go ahead and buy them?

Hi.
This has renewed my interest in breathing life into my 2007 8core. You say the GTX 570 should work with the 2.1 MPs. I've done some shopping about and found this model:

http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-...579-AR/dp/B005AY5N9O/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

With the aforementioned driver modifications, would this model work with a 2.1?

Thanks all!

It will work in 10.7.5 and above, but to benefit from CUDA you need 64-bit kernel. What thanks to Tiamo's incredible 32-bit bootloader isn't an issue anymore.

Snow Leopard is fine to upgrade direct to Mavericks but you need to be on 10.6.8.

The performance of the GTX 570 is going to be so much better than your current card that whether the 10.8 driver are slightly better tun the 10.9 drivers is irrelevant.

Thanks, I think I'll pay for the 10.8 upgrade just for peace of mind. I'm still not sold on 10.9 as a stable OS yet.

Btw, do the 3,1 Mac Pros have GPU temp sensors? Temperature Monitor gets no reading on GPU temps.

Thank you. I am new to this.
So to do a proper install on a 2.1 that can't upgrade past OS 10.75 I have a few questions:

1) Is there a cap on how much RAM on the GPU can be used by the 2.1? I don't want to spend $700 on a 2gb card only to find it can only use 1gb...

2) Would it make sense to keep the old card (X1900) installed in case of emergency/install issues requiring boot screen?

3) I've seen some GTX570s that say they are MAC Ready. Are those specifically for MPs 3.1 and above? IE, would I be better off getting a plain old vanilla GTX 570?

4) Do I need to do Tiamo's boot loader before installing the card?

Thank again. I'm new to this and appreciate the hand holding!

1. no
2. only in a closet IMO, just in case you mentioned, not installed in MP
3. these are for 3,1 and above. Would run in 1,1/2,1 with tiamo's bootloader but exactly the same as unflashed ones
4. you need this bootloader to run 64-bit kernel in 10.8 and 10.9 (what allows to use CUDA on 1,1/2,1). Another option is Chameleon bootloader, but tiamo's has no side effects. If you don't want to use CUDA, 32-bit kernel 10.7.5 will be enough for 570.

GTX 570 on MP 2.1

Thank you 666. Straight answers help.
I just ordered the 2.5 gb 570 and will report how it goes.

Hi all. Since 10.9.1 arrived, I have been getting lots of crashes and issues. I am running a non-efi GeForce 660 Ti.

I have been getting apps that crash immediately after launch, and upon inspecting the crash report and console log, I can see it's related to the GPU driver.

Check it out, you can see the top most processes are the GeForceGLDrivers that are crashing:

hay about to take the plunge and order my first GPU, just want to check it by you all.
EVGA gtx 660 ftw acx http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-239-EA&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=2379

dose that look like a good card for a macpro 3.1? been looking at that one because it's the cheapest 660 from EVGA and EVGA is recommend by the topic.
I was under the impression that EVGA was recommended because they offer reference cooler designs. The thought being that the airflow of the Mac Pro is maintained with reference cards that blow air out the back, instead of ACX style fans that can circulate the hot air inside the chassis. The reference version of this card would be this one.

thanks riggles for the info,
im new to buying a GPU, complete newb to it.

do you think the double fan cooling will be a big problem ?
i relay like the idea of less fan noise and it's cheeper at the mo than the rear exhaust version

I really don't know, I just went with a reference design after reading through some knowledgable posts. Someone with more experience than me would be more qualified to answer.

FWIW, I've been using this version of EVGA 660 in my MP 3,1 for 5 months with zero issues. It runs cooler and quieter than the stock card that came with the MP. It's a few percent slower than the reference card posted by riggles. Depending on how you use your MP you may never miss the small boost in performance. If cost was putting the rear-exhaust version out of reach (compared to the config you're looking at locally) this might be within budget.

I'm no expert on how center- or dual-fan exhausts actually affect MP performance. I do like the idea that a rear-exhaust config compliments the MP's exhaust flow rather than disrupting it.

Hope that's helpful.

hay thanks for the help, i ordered the dual fan card so ill see how it goes.
it may not be ideal for cooling but if it works im sure it'll be fine, cant be as hot as a gtx5xx card and it will be the only PCI card i have at the mo

ill report back,

(any way to measure the temp better than Temperature Monitor?)

Mac Pro 1,1

Hey,

So does all un-flashed Nvidia gtx series work in any mac pro series as long as they are running 10.7.5 ?

Looking to possibly get a gtx 760 for my mac pro 1,1 if that's true
