So now I can report on improved performance with my GTX980 under OS X 10.10.1 using all the new drivers. As was reported above, Adobe FX still can't recognize the CUDA drivers. Also, I realized that I was using the old version of CUDA-Z. Now running beta version 0.9.230, it's reporting good performance (see below). I also saw a modest improvement in Heaven at 1080p, increasing from 44.8 fps to 45.7 fps. I also saw minor improvements in Luxmark, with the Sala test increasing from 2197 to 2213 (see below). Finally, Furmark scores nicely increased, with 1080p performance running with aa off increasing from 3684 to 3958.

I think I realized it before you, see my post on the previous page. Open CL seems to have a big jump over my GTX 780.

By way of comparison I just tested my GTX570 & it gives me 786 on LuxMark (35% of GTX970) but interestingly while most CUDA scores are lower the Double-precision Float is about 179Gflop/s which is 29% faster than the GTX970.

Hi, I have been reading this board for about a week now to research my new Mac. I did buy a base model 6, 1 on Saturday but then I returned it the next day as I felt it did not give me enough performance over my two year old MacBook Pro, especially for that money. Because of the great advice I have read on this forum I have now ordered a custom Mac Pro 5, 1 from create.pro.

The specs I have ordered are:

12 Core 2.66ghz, 24GB Ram, Samsung XP941 Flash 256GB, GTX 980, GTX 120 emergency graphics card, 2TB 7200RPM HDD, USB 3.0.

The price I got for this great spec with warranty was £200 cheaper than the base model 6,1.

Does anyone know if Yosemite has killed support for the GTX 650? I've got one in my 2009 Mac Pro, and it worked fine in Mavericks (and continues to do so).

In 10.10.0, it still worked but the Mac would reboot 2 or 3 times before reaching the desktop.
I tried updating to 10.10.1, but never again reached the desktop after the restart. There is an endless reboot cycle. I restored from Mavericks backup, and the system boots normally.

An error report would appear in 10.10.0....here is a portion:

We need the whole thing, hard to know what's going wrong with just that portion. What driver are you using?

Hey, firstly, thank you Asgorath for all the work you've done.

I've got just a quick question.

In 10.9 and 10.10, I cannot use the web driver with my Mac Pro 2008 3,1 and my EVGA GTX 570. If I do want to use the Nvidia web driver, the system does not boot, gets stuck at a grey screen. I've done a clean fresh install of 10.9, all updates, then installed web driver, and still no go. I have also done a clean install of 10.10, done all updates, and then web driver, but still I get a freeze at the grey screen.
I've also installed the CUDA driver, every time.
I have to turn mac off, reset PRAM so that the OS X driver gets used, and then I get a useable system. Is there anything I'm missing?

Many thanks in advance,
Roman

^^^^Two of the pins on the Card need to be shorted. See Photo of my card to see how 6 pin cable is plugged into 8 pin plug, top two pins are shorted to the second set. or you could use a 6 pint to 8 pin adapter.

Lou

So, I ordered an 6pin to 8 pin adapter. Used the 6 to 6 pin cable in the other slot. I was guessing I'd only need the one 8-pin cable.

When I turned the computer on, I get the same message "Please power down and plug in PCie cables". Surely an 8 pin and a 6 pin connector would be enough?

Or do I need another 6 to 8 pin cable ?

Also, how do I know I don't have a fault on the power connector on the motherboard. The second connector came loose when I took out the cable. I plugged it back into place, and it seemed secure, but I wonder if I have damaged it.

As an alternative, I heard about using power from the DVD drive using a molex adapter. Is this worth trying?

I have the Yosemite beta installed on my MacPro 1.1, so keen to get the graphics card sorted out. Currently stuck with 5mb video memory on the old 2300GT !

Thanks for any help.

OK, let's think about this.

Here are the facts:

1. You haven't populated all of the power pins.

2. Your computer tells you that you haven't plugged in all of the power.

OK, what was your question again?

Haha I'm not very good at this, am I!!

I'll order another cable.

thanks for fast response.

Like with molex connectors the PCIe plugs have these pressed metal connectors inside the holes. Unlike molex which you can clearly see with these types you have to unplug the cable itself and use a small spike, flashlight and possibly a magnifier to check you've broken the insides or not. Hopefully it's the cable itself, the logic board will need a new connector re soldered on and that will cost a lot more than the cable.

I would suggest you buy another or even a second to replace that possibly dodgy one.

GTX 650 Yosemite troubles

I will try the web driver, but first I would be curious to know if you can see anything interesting in the error report I get when using OS X driver.

I've put Yosemite back on the Mac Pro 4,1 (flashed to 5,1) with a GTX 650 installed . It wasn't long before the system rebooted itself a couple of times on its own.

Here is the entire error report I got when arriving at the desktop.........

I have two Mac Pro 3,1 & one has an MSI GTX570 Twin Frozr II & the other an
MSI GTX570 Twin Frozr III. They both work OK with the Nvidia web drivers but only one monitor output can be live at a time so as both systems have dual DVI monitors I have the stock OS X drivers installed. I suppose in theory the Nvidia drivers should be better but there is no major difference that I can see running Photoshop or Premiere Pro.

I get you, thanks for the feedback. I'll experiment some more and see what I can do. I play games (Dota 2, amongst others), do some light video editing, with Final Cut Pro X, so maybe I'll get a better card.

Use the web driver.

I wish I could.

I just installed the web driver for 10.10.0. Upon reboot, I get no bong, and I'm greeted with yet another error report. AND....I'm still on the OS X Default driver.
Tried again to activate the web driver and same thing happens. And the Nvidia Driver manager tells me no updates available.

So here is the error report....slightly different from previous one posted.....
