I got through ONCE to myself using +1 before the area code in the USA.
Every other number I dialed was terminated.

this program is a bust.

Give the developer time? Fring has the exact same problems as the pre-release for version 1.14 of iphone, and that was 5 months or so ago. The quality is horrible, the lag is horrible, takes forever to log onto skype so u can actually make a call. All these issues plagued the original version, and thats why people didn't like it. So far this program is useless, unless you like to hear other people complain they can't hear you. Icall is coming out soon, as I have tested it, it is much better than Fring, although the margin is not that much

I signed up for voipstunt.com, for the Mac version. And it said that I can only call for 1 minute periods. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else. Is this so?

EDIT: I just tried a call, and I can go on longer for 1:00, so I don't know why it said that.

Got skypeout to work

Finally got it to work - you have to dial 001-619-xxx-xxxx for U.S. calls. Seems like the calls fail quite a bit so keep dialing the number (t took me 6 attempts, shut down program, tried again and the call went through).

Got this going on with my ipt2G right now. COOL!

Totally free in the US, and I generally hook the first time out, w/o dropping.

I'm so stoked! Now my touch is a phone...Exceeeelllent.

Now if my town would get off thier collective butts and make wi-fi community wide.

Why Skype??

WOW guys, I can't believe I just read through 10 pages of posts and no one clearly answered the most important question: Why would anyone be excited about Skype when it seems to me that Fring makes FREE calls to ANY number, as long as you're on WiFi? Who CARES about Skype when all you need is WiFi and the call is totally free? I'm so confused!

And for those who say that you cannot make totally free calls over WiFi, here is a direct quote from the fring website:

Is fring free?
fring says:
YES, fring charges you nothing! The software is completely free and as calls are routed over the internet rather than the mobile network, you need only pay your regular service provider for the data costs.

Another quote from a different website:

All calls are free; and the only thing you have to pay for is the data network services like 3G, GPRS, EDGE or Wi-Fi. A person using Fring optimally is likely to save more than 95% of what she would spend on traditional mobile communication. If Fring is used with free Wi-Fi in a hotspot somewhere, then the cost is nil.

I'm sure most of us have unlimited internet through our WiFi, so basically this app means unlimited calling to anyone, as long as you're on WiFi since it will use data to make calls instead of voice. Which means, this app is absolutely the most amazing app I have ever heard of.

Now please, someone tell me WHY is Skype at all important here when all calls are free over WiFi? No more rumors guys, let's answer this question once and for all, does anyone know?

I get a perpetual "Subscribing to Skype"

Service appears to be down or at least troubled.

Also, the twitter and instant messaging clients are just another app to load to try to use for chatting. They're far inferior and not even close in functionality to the chat and twitter apps that are already out there.

The only attraction (obviously) is that this is the first Skype application and since it works via Wi-Fi only the real gimmick is that it works via phone since if you wanted you could certainly buy a Skype Wi-Fi phone and use it already.

Wouldn't pay for or recommend this app in the current stat.

Very BIG bug in FRING,

It will not accept mail adress like name.lastname@gmail.com , i mean that it will not accept the dot ".".
Very annoying for those who have this kind of mail.
Skype voice is good but with a delay.

Sorry if someone has already pointed this out but...

when you register for a gmail account gmail does not allow for anyone else to register the same email with a dot in it somewhere... and in fact if someone writing you inadvertently puts a dot where it isn't suppose to be the mail will still get to you.

namelastname@gmail will get email sent to name.lastname@gmail, n.amelastname@gmail.com and so on....

so i would try entering your email without the dot and see what happens.

no... to make a call to another number(landline) you need to be hooked to a SIP which most of them are pay to use. I found one that gives you 60min per account for free, after you have to pay. I haven't looked at all the SIP. Their are exceptions such as calling someone who is hooked to msn with his phone. Since msn accepts phone calls it goes through msn not another provider =o

VoipStunt works for me. I made 3 calls, totally free that goes through every single time. Awesome.

EDIT: Okay, the fourth time, I had to try 5 times and then I quit the app and then it worked again. Call quality is not that great though. Oh well. Go fring!

you might want to try a new username. I'm on my second one too. I added Skype on my first one and it crashed every single time. So I just started a new user name and all seems fine now.

Apple restricted VOIP to only Wi-Fi.

So it's an app limitation. If fring submitted their application working on 3G, then Apple would have rejected it.

Didn't they say they will allow VOIP, but not on the edge network? Ie: allowed on wifi and 3g, jsut nto edge due to suck factor of it?:p

(this was na honest question, not trying to look like a jerk!)

Let me see if I can explain. I have family outside the US. We "talk and see" each other using Skype on both ends with our laptops. Now, I travel quite a bit and a lot of it is in the UK or Europe. So, when I'm near a WiFi spot, I could use my laptop to "talk and see". But, what if I don't want to carry my laptop and I just want to talk". This should allow me to do this without having to pay anything as long as the WiFi I'm using is free (which is true 99% of the time). This way there is no roaming charges, especially international roaming.

Does that make sense?
