It doesn't work so well with our IP PBX.

Firstly it can't connect to a private IP like 10.x.x.x

So I setup DNS forwarding on our router so that it could enter the external host name for our IP PBX and have it connect.

That worked.

Next there was a huge delay and while it could receive audio, it wasn't sending (or couldn't send audio).

I think, based on the forums, lag is a big problem for lots of folks; others are very happy (and that's great.) Unfortunately it doesn't work so well with Asterisk (PBX in a Flash) / FreePBX right now (at least not without more setup tweaking than hardware IP phones).

Hopefully an update will fix that.

I just set this up and it works like the video says it does. YOU CAN ONLY MAKE FREE CALLS LIMITED TO 1 MINUTE UNLESS YOU BUY THEIR credits.:(

If you read the TOU, it says a total of 60 min, but the e-mail says limited to 1 minute per call. I just made an 8:32 min call, so I believe the former statement more than the latter one. In all honesty though, I am just going to reregister over and over again to keep regaining my minutes. :p

Hope that helps!

Ok so i went to the SIP section and hooked myself up to a provider(FWD) which can be found here:

http://account2.freeworlddialup.com

Now i tried to call one of my friends but it keeps saying call terminated.

I registered and got a SIP number. When I try to add this SIP service on Fring it says user ID/password invalid. I tried it 20 times and I'm darn sure I'm entering the right info... wierd...

It seems you have to dial the country code...bummer. A number in the US would be 00 1 310-555-5555

Hope this helps...

**EDIT**: What I wrote above is no longer working for me. Well, it works 1 out of 10 attempts. I have no idea what the fix is....bummed

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried dialing in the 00 1 310-555-5555 format, and I also had a 10-20% success rate. So, it looks like the following formats work approx. 10% of the time:

0015554443333
+115554443333
+15554443333

I noticed that when I made calls later in the night the success rate went up...I wonder if Fring servers are getting overloaded? Not sure how the back-end of VOIP routing works...

Let me just break down what is free and clear and what isn't free. Keep in mind, this applies to MOST people, and I am sure there are some of you who are special.

Free
  • Calling someone that is logged in on MSN and Skype using PC/Mac.
  • Calling someone that has Fring installed on their iPhone and is logged in on MSN and Skype

Not Free
  • Calling any actual phone number, which includes landline and cellphone
  • Receiving phone call using Skype number

This program is pretty straight forward. If you're on WiFi, you can use the voice option on Fring. But if you're not on WiFi, you can only use the chat option of Fring.

Also, number format for Skype should be "+" + "country code" + "area code" + "phone number".
Example:
  • (US) +12125556878, which calls New York area code of 212.
  • (France) +33014225543, which calls Paris.

This really is great news, I have been waiting for this application since the iPhone came out, and even more so since the 2nd generation touch came out with the microphone input. To me skype working on the touch is THE killer app and the deal sealer for me. I am going to wait a little bit and make sure that the microphone part works as I hope it will. I live on campus at a major university and the whole campus is covered with fast wi-fi so for me having the ability to call out on skype is a great thing.

Additionally, I will be going to japan to study for a semester and I wanted to bring along a device that can get on skype with wi-fi (besides my laptop) since the host university will be covered as well. The 3 dollar US, and the 10 dollar international skype packages are perfect for my uses.

Hopefully the app remains in the store and only gets better, and even more so I hope that more apps like it make there way to the touch!

P.S. How are peoples experiences getting it to work with skype out anyway?

It has been inconsistent so far for me. When I can get it to connect I am really satisfied with the call quality, although I have had alot of issues getting connected. I keep getting the call terminated and I have to keep trying until it connects. Even so I am very pleased.

cool. but does anyone know when the earphones with mic for the ipod touch actually comes out? Apple Store still says coming soon. :(
Don't wait for the Apple one... you can get a much cheaper one today, any mobile headset with a standard plug will do ( confirmed on my ipod touch )

I am also experiencing this problem. Formatting the number as +15554443333 does not solve the problem. However, formatting it as +115554443333 allows approximately 20% of the calls to go through. Anyone have any solution or thoughts on this?

I use always 00 + country + area + phone # without any problem

so a local call in NYC would be 001 212 XXX XXXX

Any suggestions for a headset with microphone for the iPod Touch 2G? Apples In-Ears are still not available...
