So wait ... do I have to have a Skype account first?
How does Skype even work? Do you have to pay a bill to them at the end of the month?

get skype on your computer first... then you will know.. Computer-Computer calls free and of excellent quality even feasible with a dialup connection. Any call computer to landline/ mobile worldwide require the purchase of a skype out credit. The call will be deducted from that credit at VERY low per minute rates and now they have even special plans check it out here http://www.skype.com/intl/en/prices/

I couldn't find a SIP+Skype wireless phone, so I thought this would be the ticket.

But people keep on posting it doesn't work well or at all with SIP, Asterisk, PBXs, etc.

I also don't want to get a locked cell phone with contract, but the iPod touch has no integrated mic, and I don't want the hassle of an external wired headset.

Back to square zero.

Well that was fun…

Been trying to get a Skype call through Fring (iPhone), but no luck.

I tried all combinations of calling numbers, but I just keep getting Call Terminated.

Lots of Credit on my Skype account and calls using my Mac work fine.

Seems as if Fring isn't the answer. :(

Ah well…

The App came out yesterday. It has some issues. Give the developer a little time to get them straightened out. If they don't get them straightened out in a reasonable time....then we will throw them under the bus! :D

In a perfect world every developer would only put out perfect Apps....we don't live in a perfect world.

Just my $0.02

Glad Fring is here, but it'd be nice to be able to use 3G as WELL as Wifi...hopefully a future update will include it.

Using Skype over 3G would be trying to use your wireless provider's network
without them getting paid for the call ... no cell phone provider is going to allow that.
And don't forget that if they own the network, it's their network, and as long as they don't violate
your privacy rights, they can control the content on their network all they want to.

actually three in the UK give you 5000 skype to skype minutes free every month on all their tariffs

Are you putting the + in front if the number you are dialing. I have had not one issue calling in the states and overseas

Yup… I tried all the + or 00 etc etc combinations.
No luck.

It may well be a UK thing again.

Edit:
It seems to be working… on and off. Hit and miss. :)

Edit 2:
For the UK it seems to work if you do not drop the 0 on the area code… so for a London number you'd dial +44020XXXXXXXX
That works. :)
+4420XXXXXXXX doesn't.

Call quality is pretty rough though.

Skype (iPhone to computer and Skype out) both had massive delays.

Google Talk audio call did not work at all.

You need to remmember that fring is a server based software, so if you are located near a fring datacenter you will get good service , this is why some of us get good results and some get high latency.

I used it to connect to a SIP server. A few things that I have noticed:

1. Once you dial a phone #, the keypad will not allow you to enter extensions or other numbers that require a tone. This needs to be fixed.
2. Volume is too low.
3. Need the ability to add multiple SIP accounts. I have one for work, plus I want to add a second for Gizmo. You can only choose one SIP provider. Bummer.
4. I'd like to see integration with GrandCentral.

All in all, this is a start of good things to come. I'm sure this app will get better in time, but I am glad to finally have it!

The key is to type the number like this - +12223334444 for US numbers for example. I bet you are missing the + and possibly the areacode :)

I struggled with the same call terminated thing until a number from my skype contact list worked and it had a +1 in it! :)

Use 001 prefix for US SkypeOUT

Been trying to get a Skype call through Fring (iPhone), but no luck.
I tried all combinations of calling numbers, but I just keep getting Call Terminated.

I had success using 001 as a prefix (i.e. 001-XXX-XXX-XXXX). You have to hand dial the number and not use the Fring contact list. This works for US calls but I don't believe it would work outside the USA.

Great news. I'm sure this will be the first of many such clients. You'd have to think that if you can use a third-party app to connect to AIM, Skype, MSN etc. they will release clients themselves. I have an MSN and Skype client on my LG Viewty after all.

As someone who really loves my Apple hardware I'm a bit shocked at my immediate thought when hearing fring was available...

"Must get it before Apple pulls it from the AppStore"

Apple are beginning to undermine my trust in their ability to run a company that takes care of all Stakeholders.

I know there are always clashes - but at the moment competition and client wishes take a back seat at Apple.
Well Apple said they would allow this so why would they pull it now?
