You know something just occurred to me. Maybe some people don't know about the "show status in menu bar" option in the mobleme preferences. That makes it very easy to just reach up there, hit sync at any time. I'm just thinking maybe some people think they have to go into preferences to sync up. That would bother me too if I thought that was the case.

Aye...that is indeed the case. I've only recently turned it on as I dislike my menu bar being cluttered. I'd imagine that you're right and a lot of people are having to 'click' more than they should.

Mobileme needs some serious updates. It feels like a beta at the moment. I still can't even see my email in safari after 3 days. ical, contacts etc all show up and work, but with email, it's just blank.

Also, it's no where near "exchange for the rest of us", which apple claimed it would be. I fail to see how any serious businessman would use mobileme over exchange when it lacks the very basic features i.e. true automatic syncing from computer to devices

Everything seems ok at my end, apart from MobileMe -> Mac push refuses to work. Nothing updates on my MacBook until there is an automatic/manual sync with the 'cloud'.

Frustrating, especially considering some folks have managed to get that working.

I just added a calender event on me.com, showed up within 30 seconds on my iMac, then I added another calender event on me.com, and it has yet to show up on my iMac, been about 5 minutes.

I think there is still definitely problems with the push on me.com.

Off topic: Anyone know how to disable the warning that comes up in iCal when an event is being changed and it says 'More than 5% of information is going to be changed blah blah...' ?

It's hit and miss. I know another user who has no issues with push from the cloud to his iMac, yet nothing will push to his iPod touch.

I wish they'd just take it offline and fix it already.

Check your iSync preferences, it's in there.

Thanks for the help guys.

Funny enough, I deleted a calender event on me.com, and now maybe 45 minutes later its still in my iCal!

Hopefully my iPhone will be arriving today and I can try some tests with MobileMe -> iPhone.

Mine is now sorted.

What got things working as they are (now) advertised was FINALLY getting activated by O2. Which has got me thinking...

Now that my phone is activated and things are pushing/syncing correctly, that implies it doesn't come through wi-fi. Could it be possible that the failures are actually not to do with faults at Apple's end, but instead faults lie with the network operators?

EDIT: Taking thoughts along those lines, I wonder if this is why Apple are saying that everything is fine at their end? If the fault does indeed lie with the network operators, then it isn't strictly an Apple issue.

That is because iCal gets updated through a timed SYNC initiated from your Mac.

Again, the Apple servers have no idea what your Mac's IP is, unless the request is initiated by your Mac, hence a pull of data, not a cloud push.

MobileMe is positively whizzing along tonight on its web interface. The performance is barely distinguisable from a regular desktop. Flicking from Mail to Cal to Contacts and to iDisk is virtually instant!

I am receiving reports that Apple are emailing MobileMe customers with an apology and a comment that they will be sorting out the Push from the desktop. Has anyone had this email yet (I haven't) - perhaps they could post a copy on here for all to see?

that is not true at all. "the cloud", when working, does push data down to your mac. It knows your IP address the same way "Back to my mac" knows your IP address, and i believe it uses the same port to send the data, which is opened through uPnP.

It's the other way around, sending changes up from your mac to the server, that is not push but on a set interval.

There's another MM thread in the news section with a quote of the email, I've not got it either yet. Basically it says that they acknowledgde it didn't go well, the term pushed has caused some confusion and we're getting 30 days free added onto our memberships. All in all a good statement.

Sorry I can't link the post...I'm on my iPod Touch!

This is kind of off topic but...

How about, as an alternative to mobileME, signing up for a web hosting service with Exchange and ActiveSync support?

My provider charges $6.99 a month for it (1And1).

Does anyone know how Exchange works in terms of syncing up? I.e. if I have my computer at home setup on an exchange mailbox, and my iphone, how fast does the computer push stuff up to the server and how fast will my iPhone get it?

The only drawback I see is that at work, I'm already using Exchange, and you can only set up 1 exchange server per PC, unless someone has found a workaround. ;) I guess I could just use OWA at work though.

an even better alternative may be a hosted zimbra solution. As of the latest version, zimbra supports push email , contacts, and calendars to the iphone, and syncs with address book and ical. Basically it works just like mobileme, but with your own domain and many additional user options. The only downside seems to be that the web interface isn't as pretty, although it has far more features.

01.com sells this package for $50/year, i'm looking into it for myself right now.

How does this work? I looked around their website a bit but am not fully understanding the interworkings. Would it basically be changing my MobileMe email in Mail/iPhone to zimbra, and my sync services would sync with zimbra instead of MobileMe? That correct?

i believe the way it works is you download the isync conduit, which sets up your computer so that your standard address book and calendar syncs go to your zimbra service instead of apple, you set up your mail account in Mail as exchange, and you set up your iphone as Exchange activesync. You provide your own domain, or you use @zimbra.01.com.

I haven't tried it yet, this is just my understanding of the process. they do offer the first 30 days for $1 so you can give it a try.

but this would be the same in mobile me, in regards that the desktop apps still don't "push" to the server (?), it's still a sync on a schedule solution?

(or would we get a push using ms entourage?)

seems to me to be pretty much the same as mobile me in the end? am i missing something?
