wow, that's like, 100 years in smartphone-years (see dog years as a reference):D Hopefully all of the rumors about a CDMA iPhone in Q1 1011 will come to fruition.

The clouds left, some wind, but I still set up the T1i + 70-200 f2.8 L mkII, tripod, wireless remote, and played with my TC's 2.0x + 1.4x (mkII's) stacked last night.

Live view 10x works great for focus, exif data in picts.

This was cropped 1430 pix high, exported @ 1024 high and posted 1024 pix.

I very-very slightly adjusted the red/cyan and blue/yellow CA after noticing some on the lower bottom RH "white" outer portion of the moon, just visually until it appeared to go away.
used 0.35 on the Apple Aperture slider scale towards cyan, and 0.10 towards yellow. Maybe not perfect, my first time doing CA adjustment.
(fwiw, I just calibrated my monitor with a Spyder 3 Elite earlier in the week)

Here is some pixel peeping, this is 800 pix crop posted 800pix high.

I hope with calmer skies some more detail pops out.
Remember, next week is lunar eclipse.

[edit-added below]
btw, this set-up is HUGE, glad my CF tripod can handle it.
Doing this is where one of those flip-up LCD screens would really be sweet and keep you off your knees when pointing up....I would not complain if the 7D mkII incorporated such a device like the 60D.

Looking forward to trying to get the lunar eclipse tomorrow night.
For now here is my first moon shot with my new AF-S NIKKOR
28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, from a couple of nights ago. Hand held
300mm, Hand held, f -11, 1/250, ISO 1600...

RHVC59;
You should be able to shoot the moon at ISO 100 or 200, 1600 is giving way to much sensor noise. Is that a typo or you really shot @ 1600?
Try ISO 100, f10, 1/250 sec next time and see what that exposure gives you.
It's always better to slightly underexpose the moon and bring it up in post.

Hopefully weather is clear for both of us Mon night/Tues morning.

Yep, it was ISO 1600, and you are absolutely right, way too noisy. I was shooting the first day out on auto, and hand held with the new lens.

I second your thoughts on the weather. So far so good, Cold and clear here in SE Alaska...

Here is one from tonight shot manual on a tripod.
I did a series of shots at F22, F16, and F 14, ISO set to 100, and times raning rom 1/500 to 1/60. The auto focus works fairly well, but I cant remember if I had the VR turned off or not.

For all of you Lunar Photogs, in the wee early hours of the morning (between 1-3am in central North America, there will be a lunar eclipse of the full moon at the winter solstice. This apparently will not occur again until another 80 years or so. The moon will turn reddish-brown. So let's see some pictures from you hardy moon people!:D

I'm not sure about the 80 year thing, Lunar eclipse happens more than that, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_eclipse

However, here in Howell MI the clouds have moved away, so it they stay mostly away for next 14-15 hours that would be sweet.
I'm willing to even drive within 3 hour radius for clear skies....

Looks better, but quite underexposed, no need for f/16 use f/11 on a full moon.

How did you focus?
It looks soft or slightly off.
Does your camera have live view focus?
My Canon T1i has live view, I use that on LCD back @ 10x size and contrast detection focus always dials in the moon.

I think the 80 yr thing is the alignment of a full moon, a lunar eclipse and the winter solstice. Got my info from TV news so take the source into consideration. Hope the clouds stay away!! Good hunting!

From NASA:

This lunar eclipse falls on the date of the northern winter solstice. How rare is that? Total lunar eclipses in northern winter are fairly common. There have been three of them in the past ten years alone. A lunar eclipse smack-dab on the date of the solstice, however, is unusual. Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory inspected a list of eclipses going back 2000 years. "Since Year 1, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is 1638 DEC 21," says Chester. "Fortunately we won't have to wait 372 years for the next one...that will be on 2094 DEC 21."

Sadly my NikonD80 does not have a live view feature, so I am focusing in the view finder...
Here is another stab at it from just after moon rise.

I am sure I will get it eventually....

An hour and a few to go and it's still cloudy in my area of the PNW :(

No Eclipse tonight :( unless a miracle happens. Well, I could keep alive until 2094 (I'll be about 130yrs old)

There will be no Eclipse here in Kentucky either. Right now we are under 99% cloud cover. And even at 7AM, after the Eclipse has ended, we are forecasted to be at 91% cloud cover. :(

I am definitely looking forward to all the shooters that have clear skies, to share their images of the Eclipse.

My eclipse picture isn't really that good. I also lack a long enough telephoto to get good detailed shots of the eclipse. However, the clouds did make some nice moody full moon shots.

Los Angeles was underwater (we've been having rainstorms for days) so we had no chance to see the eclipse. I'm going to sit on my front lawn and wait for 2094.
