Starting shooting around half way through. The dark shots really pushed the limits of the lens (nikkor 18-200) and the camera but it was a beautiful night and I had a good time shooting

There are some more in the Flickr Set

Here's what I got from my backyard. Canon Rebel Xt with 70-200 f/4 L at 200. ISO 100-400. Aperture f/10. Shutter times from 1/160 sec. to 6 sec. 10:20-12:25, December 20-21.

that's a freakin' awesome photo... mind posting a larger version for a wallpaper :p

Here is one from earlier this year

Took this Sat night (1/8), air showed lots of thermal disturbance as seen on lower LH side mostly
_MG_3897.jpg

Next day from above shot (this shot Sun 1/9), same set-up (70-200 L + 2.0x + 1.4x TC), upper atmosphere is much more settled, pict shows much more fine detail.

Even when skies are clear there may be lots of thermals in upper air that distort your picts, I tend to take a series of shots spaced a few minutes apart each over 10-12 minutes.
Also, when its cold outside put the camera/lens (with cap on) outside 30-40 minutes prior so the camera lens cools to ambient temp also.

From 1 day old moon thru Valentines eve moon, a few looks at our beautiful moon.
Never ending wonderment for countless people, myself included.

My wife and I saw that moon with the ring around it-- we're in in SE Michigan..

Great shots! You must have some pretty long lenses. Do you ever post EXIF data or f stop or anything?

This mornings full moon time was 3:36am, this taken 4:38am.

Saturn, this taken 4:54am Fri Feb 18th
Gosh getting focus @ 560mm is touchy.....via zoom lens, not a telescope

It was really windy and upper air thermals present, so not the clearest full moon shot I’ve taken, still ok.
I could see the moon “wavey/moving” in real time in my camera like when you look over a hot road in the summer time.

Definitely that turbalence affected the saturn shot also - so I was happy as it came out ok, I'll re-try on calm day to see how much more clarity/crispness is possible for my set-up.

here is my moon shot last night 3/19

Great photos

Hey, mtbdudex and munkees nice pixs! I like photos of the solar system. I was out last night or shall I say this morning and my camera captured the brightness of the moon. It was brighter than usual.

I was not very pleased with my shots of the "Big Moon" last night, much happier with the shots from earlier in the week.

RHVC59: the first photo is awesome! Is that the moon? Crazy close! Living in Alaska has its advantages. Also, I like the other photos too. I need another camera. :(

I lack a long lens to get nice up close moon detail. It was also hazy as it rose on Saturday night. So I'll have to be happy with a hazy, fuzzy, orange super moon. At least it is different from the rest of the moon pictures here. :)

Advantages and Disadvantages, But I really do not want to live anywhere else.:D
My house faces east, so I get great winter Sunrises, Moonrises when it is not over cast, some thing that happens quite frequently living in a Rainforest... Summer, the days are longer, so I am rarely up early enough to catch the sunrise, or very late sunsets. Anyway the moon always looks so much larger when it is just peaking over the horizon, and I have a clear shot at it from my deck looking across Carroll Inlet. Now If I could just move the telephone and power lines all would be right with the world.

Oh and I need to pick up a doubler, so that I can use the 28-300 nikor as a as a 900 mm (300 mm x 1.5 x 2) 900mm, that will make a larger Moon in the image...

Instant Classic

I file this under the creative moon shots like RHVC59's above, very nice!
I take it that is a plane to the left of the moon?

(different crop, so size appears not consistent....sorry)
Now this shot was taken earlier that day, 4:47am to be precise, so 10-ish hours prior to the full moon
