Well I've conceeded. Next week I will be getting the note

The temptation is too much for me. I'll keep my 6 plus and use it alongside the note 4. I'm buying it unlocked so I can get it in bronze gold.
Ha great stuff

Could just use one as a mini tablet I guess

By the way Samsung (in the US only) has had a beta launcher out called "Terrain Home". I'm going to guess that some (not al) of this is the direction for next Touch Wiz.

Just gave it a try, pretty good start. I hope they are moving in that direction.

Ha, welcome to the iPhone 6+ and Note 4 simultaneous ownership, I think there are a bunch of us on here. After having them both side by side I realized that the Note 4 satisfied all my needs and the iPhone was there mostly because of the nice build quality and that incredible feeling of the aluminum housing. But like a beautiful vapid woman I realized quickly that it wouldn't hold my attention long.

I'm on ATT, so a Samsung phone is out of the cards for me due to the crazy strict lockdown ATT puts on Sammy phones lately.

What happened to the good old Note 2 days on ATT ? The ATT Note 2 had amazing development for it which made that phone even better. It was easily rooted and easy to install Recovery. Just sucks now two years later that's all over for new Note's.

I like Samsung phones but NO WAY stock. IMO Touchwiz does so much better without carrier bloat and Samsung bloat installed. Removing those apps makes a HUGE difference in performance and battery life. And then Touchwiz custom ROM's squeeze out even more performance and even better features.

No, it's not. Touchwiz is an INTERFACE. I really don't want to post the same wiki page every time someone says touchwiz is an operating system but here goes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TouchWiz

All OEM's put their own sort of bloat apps on their phones, but samsung probably puts the most on theirs. My s3 stutters from time to time but my nexus 5 is butter smooth. I definitely like the stock android experience better. The only thing I like better on my s3 is the app shortcuts on the lockscreen and the quick settings in the swipe down notification center. I hate on stock android you have to do the double finger pull down or twice single finger pull down. So inconvenient.

Yes and no. I'm not sure if you're implying that Samsung just slaps a few apps and a new interface over Google's Android and calls it a day, but that would be incorrect. To simplify things, Samsung (just like the other OEMs) pulls AOSP source code, adds their framework/apps/interface, then compiles and builds their ROMs.

So while it may be semantically incorrect to refer to Samsung's OS -- as a whole -- TouchWiz, it is a completely different OS from what you'd find on another manufacturer's device (which I believe is what MRU was trying to tell you).

I think things get repeated a lot by reviewers who have nothing to say - and then people think they are true.

I've had all the iphones up to the 5S, plus the Galaxy S5 and the Note 4. Of all those the one that fin most secure in the hand was the Iphone 3GS and the Galaxy S5 i.e. the ones with the smoothest back. Go figure...

As for build quality, this has no meaning anymore. I was carrying a pile of papers with my note 4 in it and slipped - dropped the Note 4 face down on a tiled floor yesterday from waist height. Glass not cracked - not even a scratch.

Why do I have the Note 4, well my Iphone5S broke on first drop on the same floor. Need we say more about so-called "build quality"?

I agree with this.

Wow man! All I know is that almost everyone I see with an iphone, the glass is always shattered to high hell. Android, I don't really see anything much if as much as a crack or something small, but boy does that iphone glass just shatter.

I will have to look at that launcher.

Spot on Exactly matey. But I ended up deciding it is easier to just give up trying in this instance ;)

Just sucks so sad that ATT screwing us like hits, while T-Mobile gets all the root Recovery love they want, and even Sprint is better, and dare I say Verizon not as bad as ATT is lately

I remember just two years ago, the ATT Note 2 had root and Recovery immediately after release, and the ATT XDA Note 2 forums were jammed packed with ROM's and kernels. Why did ATT make such a drastic change to lock it down so hard now ? Where as T-Mobile allows it to be unlocked with ease ?

ATT allows HTC to still be unlocked, you can buy the ATT One M8 and root it and install custom Recovery out of the box with ease. But no way is that possible with the ATT S5 or Note 4, but why ATT ?

Note 4 short review/comparison to iPhone 6 Plus.

So I have both an iPhone 6 Plus and Note 4, since there seems to be several posts with people asking about one or the other, I figured I would post my comparison of the two. After having my Note 4 for over a week now, I must say it is the best phone Samsung has ever made.

Off the bat, they are both very comproble in several aspects, display quality, sound quality, build, battery life, reception, speed, camera. In these features, the differences are negligible, so I will only say that their both great on those fronts. If you want me to go into more detail, I can, but any advantage one has over the other in those fields is just so small it isn't really worth getting into IMO.

The design and build are really quite nice, the aluminum trim with chamfered edges looks great, though it can be easily scratched. While it doesn't feel as nice in the hand as the iPhone 6 Plus with its rounded edges, its less slippery and easier to grip. I do wish they had upped the design of the spen to match the rest of the phone though, as its still made with that cheezy looking chrome plastic.

Software wise, touchwiz is still an eyesore, luckily you can bypass a lot of it by setting 3rd party apps as your defaults. Hopefully google will soon allow us to choose a default dialer, as the Samsung one is really ugly.

e5ce8920213f98d738d40d1d1903f0ac.jpg

Performance wise, I had to disable a lot of apps, 29 to be exact. And performance is still kinda iffy. While the phone is definitely fast, frame rates are inconsistent. At times its super smooth, other times it just starts to bogg down and becomes super stuttery. I also notice more frame drops in games than on my iPhone, SimCity for example is constantly smooth on my iPhone, but is hit or miss on my Note.

One last note on software, and that is that the software on the iPhone seems to be better optimized for the larger display. As you can see in the screen shots, you get more information on the iPhone, and even dual pane in landscape. Hopefully with the Nexus being a large screen phone, google and 3rd party developers will see fit to optimize things for these bigger sizes, just amazing how apple just released the bigger iPhone a couple months ago and is already ahead in this department.

Where the Note truly shines though is in multitasking and handwriting recognition. Its awesome to be able to watch Netflix and surf the web at the same time. To be able to minimize an app and have it floating around to get back to. And the spen really provides some extra functionality not found on any other phone, and the handwriting recognition is amazing. Myscript also makes 2 really cool apps that work great with the spen, if you have a Note, I really recommend getting Myscipt Calculator and Myscript Smart Notes.

All in all, even with its flaws, the Note 4 is currently my favorite phone, though a part of that might be that I'm still in the honeymoon stage. While the iPhone has its own advantages (performance, apps optimized for screen size, quality of apps, iMessage, iWork, ect), the multitasking and spen really put the Note over the top for me. Either way, both handsets are great and you can't go wrong with either.

2 things to say. 1) you have the ATT version, which IMO stutters and lags. I had a couple of ATT Note 4's, and eventually migrated to a Tmobile Note 4. All the ATT ones lagged and stuttered, even after I stripped them down of apps. The Tmobile one doesn't lag at all, it's super smooth. Something about the ATT one is nasty. 2) In my experience the Note 4 holds much more information in it's display. I posted some pics a while ago on Map applications for example, you could see more map area, more street names, etc on the Note 4 than the 6+.

Great comparison. Not sure what browser you're using, but I use the stock browser. First thing I did was put it in full immersive mode. Meaning no notification bar. Then turn the text scaling down to 90%. Default setting had fonts too big for my taste. From your screen shot of the two phones on MacRumors website, the font on the Note 4 looks larger than the iPhone 6+. Try out my settings of you use the stock browser.

Guy next to me at work got one. I felt kind of embarrassed for him when he tried to turn it on to show it to me - he had to swipe his finger over the fingerprint sensor 6-7 times before it would let him into the phone. Not sure if that's typical but Touch ID works for me the first time every time.

The current swipe implementation is pretty crap to be honest, but thankfully they're replacing it with a touch sensor for the new ones (according to latest rumours).

Its down to how you set it up, I set mine up for my right and left thumbs as well right and left index, set it up to recognize the thumbs in a number of ways (side ways, straight down etc...), so I have no issues getting it 1st time.

Only problem is getting it right when hands are wet, now that's annoying.

Yes, if set up right mine opens up on the first try 99% of the time. It's still not as convenient as on the iPhone though.

Very good post. My perfect phone would be the iphone 6+ with a stylus. If you like to handwrite things, it is a hard thing to pull away from. I hate so much about samsung phones but the note, really s-pen, is amazing.

I know what you meant it's just hard to describe it.

I really wish people would stop saying the iPhone breaks more easily. It really all comes down to how it falls and how much force is put in the phone. I can't stress how many phones of any manufacture I see broken out in the wild. I don't care who makes it. That's why we all should have a good case and screen protector on our phones, and stop blaming the manufactures for the dumb things we do to your phones.

I don't use cases or screen protectors on any of my Android phones and ive never had an issue with bending or cracked screens. The 6+ bends easily, just accept it and move on.

Yes but many people have had bending issues with the 6+.

How many iPhone 6+'s have been sold ?

What proportion have had issues in comparison? Answer = a very very tiny minority.

Indeed I'd argue many of the iPhone bending reports were either bogus or people purposely bending iPhones after the whole 'bendgate' fabrication (unbox-therapy successfully manufactured a scandal for youtube revenue ) . Indeed it was shown after that many other phones also bend when you put them under the same stress.

This silliness of bending is thrown out every time someone wants to have a dig at the iPhone, usually by very insecure or over sensitive Android users, and at this stage it's so passé its tiresome...

I'm not so sure about that. I think the bending was overblown. But it still exists. There are many issues with the iPhone. Just like any other manufactured product. Just look in the iPhone section here on MR. I'm not insecure about my devices if I report issues with any platform though or device. :)

My 6 plus hasn't bent. I think because of all the ho ha I'm more worried about it and take it out of the case to check it from time to time. I suppose I'm more worried about it but I'm not treating it any differently to my other devices. I do think it's all overblown. I'm using mine jsut as I use all my other devices and it hasn't bent.
