Pretty sure it's any working smartphone.

How 'thorough' do they test the phones? I also have an old Note 2 with a damaged SIM tray that also powers up and works fine..until you insert a SIM and try to make a call. :p

Not that I'm advocating such behavior...just also not a big BB fan after some crappy past experiences.

My cardio per his plan is walking, yes walking 2 miles, but while carrying 80lbs.

Got me into pretty good shape. And I will be 42 next week.

I'll happily walk the 5 miles without the extra baggage :D.

I do sometimes walk at its sharpest incline on the treadmill for a good hour - it's great for the mountains :)

Another nice thorough review. I can't wait to pick up this phone tomorrow!
I like how he mentioned the difference in packaging/branding between Tmobile and ATT. ATT makes me want to puke.

This is turning into a two-way thread.
I think it is just TW on lollipop. It cannot be lollipop since all other devices running it do not have the problem.

What about Marshmallow? Is that supposed to be more stable?
Even if it is though, we'll probably still have to wait until next year to get it.

Verge review is up: http://www.theverge.com/2015/8/20/9181451/samsung-galaxy-note-5-review

I'm enjoying the comments section calling out the reviewer for a few inconsistencies about fairness. Heh.
I love how he gets called out......

Yup. Fun stuff.

I think Samsung is wrong to not include a 128GB option. That should be called out. For a power user phone, that's just puzzling.

However, there are good reasons for losing removable batteries and microSD -- some of those reasons influenced by reviews and journalists from the likes of Verge (negativity about build quality, lack of design, materials, etc.).

Samsung can't win. We always knew these changes would be polarizing. Personally, I'm happy to see Samsung finally joining the ranks of better design, build, materials, faster SSDs, etc.

Also, Apple is constantly praised for forward-thinking ideas and moves where they darely leave behind things that will go out of date in the near-future. When Samsung tries to do the same, they get knocked for it.

Welp I bit the bullet and went ahead and ordered one, I always swap between the iPhone and the Note Series, For some reason even though its not confirmed I have no interest in picking up the new iPhone when it drops. 64GB Note 5 is on z way!

Agreed....Don't know why they don't have a 128GB option either. Makes no sense. Then not releasing in Europe is puzzling.
There is so much negativity around any Samsung phone. Its just amazing how they are held to a different standard then other OEMs. In this thread alone its funny to watch.

Alot are angry it won't be available in europe.

Me included. It's put a downer on a fantasy device.

Ok, finally have my Note 5 set up how I like it. A couple of things, out the box I had 53.3gb of free space on the AT&T 64gb model. Had to disable a ton of AT&T bloatware. Performance is great, everything is fast and smooth, even when installing all my apps it was faster than my Note 4. I havent had any of the keyboard lags i had with the S6.

The screen is definitely nicer, the whites are whiter, it has better viewing angles, and it's brighter too. TouchWiz with the material theme is great, with nova launcher it really gives a stock Android feel, even the keyboard looks like googles, but with Samsung's added software features. This might be my favorite version of android. The stock Samsung apps with the material theme look great, and the animations are nice too.

I haven't noticed the refresh issue, after a reset I have 1.4gb of ram free. More thoughts later, but so far loving this phone.

Alright, I went back to peruse some of the Verge's other review and see where the Note 5's score of 8.7, what I initially considered to be quite good, stood in comparison. A few things jump out at me to basically reduce any credibility their review staff has.

1) The iPhone 6 scores a 9 (highest ever), while the 6+ scores an 8.7. Except for size, the 6+ trumps the 6 in every measurable fashion--better camera, display and battery life top that list. The iPhone 6 also having the highest rating ever amongst smart phones? It's a good device but come on...review just screams 'thank God there's now a larger screened iPhone...'

2) The Moto X (2014) scored second highest rating ever...same as the Galaxy S6, at 8.8. Yet dig down into the ratings of individual aspects and it's considered to have mediocre battery life and camera. They also consider the Moto X display to be rated a 10 out of 10. It was better than the 2013 iteration of the Moto X but no where near as good as the equally rated S6, Note 5, or even iPhone 6+.

3) They scored the Galaxy Nexus...the Verizon version...at 8.7. 'Nuff said. ;)

One thing you have to remember with those reviews is time, the Note 5 and S6 weren't available when the 2014 Moto X was released, this was before the Note 4 even, it was probably up against the S5, though 10 does seem high.

Also the final score is not an average or aggregate of the individual scores, it's basically what the reviewer feels about the device. So let's say 2 identical handsets are reviewed, but one get a lower battery score but higher display score, depending on what more important to the reviewer on might rank higher than the other or vice versa.

The Note 5 is a speed demon. The Note 4 beats the Nexus 6 in testing of opening apps. The Note 5 smoked the Note 4 opening Angry Birds 2 by 5 minutes, Subway Surfers by 4 seconds. I think that is pretty darn impressive, we ain't talking milliseconds here.

I'm not a multitasker either so I'd be alright with the Note 5. I only did it as a test because there has been much talk about refreshing apps on Samsung devices so I was curious if the extra RAM made a difference.

The display is great, both Subway Surfers and Angry Birds 2 did not show as much bloat in colors as the Note 4 and both were set on basic. Even youtube videos looked more realistic.

Back to exercising. Gotta get the heart rate up with cardio, that works for me. Folks plodding long on a treadmill ain't gonna get far, I tell them they need to do intervals at least (fast then slow). I do stairmaster at the gym and do bleachers at the high school, fast and slow. I do sprints at the track at the high school. Explosive stuff works. The only leg work I do as far as with weights is holding a 45 pound plate on my chest and do squats with my back against a wall. I don't need to do anything else, my legs are toast from everything else I mentioned. :)

If anyone is curious just do a yahoo image search of Nick Weatherford, the punter on the NY Giants. I could only dream of looking like that!

Likewise you must factor that its just a subjective opinion and from different reviewers. That being said Moto X 2014 display should be a 6- 7 tops. I love my 32gb pure - but it's display is not a 10 - all I can surmise is the reviewer had been using some poor displays prior to it.

But did you test re-opening said apps after launch rather than just the initial load ? That's the stumbling block. The fact one keeps them in memory and can swap between whilst the other has to go back to start and reload afresh.

But as I posted previously whilst this aggressive ram issue will affect all devices - it's actual affect on the end user will vary considerably depending on their usage pattern and many will get away with not noticing the affect, whilst sadly some will be plagued. Its just a shame that in late 2015 with 4gb ram - that the issue exists at all.

However the biggest shame is still the fact they decided not to release it at all in Europe.

Understood but they should have at least some semblance of objective, measurable standards...not a 'well, this is better than the last phone i reviewed so I'll rate it higher.' approach that seems all too often present. And the Note 4 was subsequently reviewed, with a better camera, display, memory and storage options, and offer really good performance---yet was rated lower.

Yup...and why I'm starting to see the light about the criticisms of the Verge. Why have individual ratings if in the end, they are a bit meaningless?

They might not deserve the iVerge moniker but they are inconsistent as hell.

Hit the nail on the head...he's comparing it to the 2013 display, which was pretty much crap. Next to that model, of course it's going to look like a 10.

Same symptom of the Note 5's review--too much comparison to previous version and less emphasis on how it stands on its own.
