The Verge:

Stop fretting about the Note 7’s performance

Giving it some deep thought and focusing in, I can find slowdowns and performance imperfections on the Note 7, sure. But if you’re going to overanalyze to that degree, you’ll also find inefficiencies and flaws in Jimmy Page’s strumming technique.

The actual feeling of using the Note 7 is in no way slow or unsatisfying. I'm a demanding reviewer when it comes to speed and responsiveness, having slated the Moto G4and the Xperia Z5’s camera software for their sluggishness in recent times, and I’m telling you that the Note 7 is fine.

Still, Samsung should find a way to squash this perception -- whether it's exaggerated or not -- once and for all. It's one of the few remaining things that holds them back (along with carrier control over bloatware/updates, which isn't entirely unrelated to performance).

I'm curious though, is he using an Exynos variant? It seems like the issues and performance hiccups are mostly to be had with Snapdragon variants which is very frustrating (if that is in fact true, I don't have one yet).

I think people are forgetting a pretty big factor here. The iPhone 6s has had an entire year of software updates where as the note 7 is on its first public release. The software is bound to have more bugs and hiccups than a phone which has had many updates to iron out things over the last year.

In general in my experience iOS is just faster.

Also in my experience, the note 7 has been very good with performance. Amazing? Nope. But that's ok.

that definitely helps. I know subsequent updates should smooth it out. iPhone 6s out of the gate with iOS 9 wasn't very fun ;)

EDIT: I didn't get the 6s at launch. The 6 (which I got at launch) was rough with iOS 8 but I think the same thing happened with iOS 9.

All true. But a lot of the times Samsung does not just release updates for tweaks and battery performance.

Hmm I'm starting to wonder if I have a faulty Note 7. I've been getting some very weird stuff. yesterday the entire phone froze up on me, wouldn't do anything for what was maybe a minute or 2, then it started doing stuff but very very slowly. Finally it went back to normal but then I kept dropping calls left and right, but this was on wifi calls. I rebooted and it seemed ok after that, and didn't drop calls in the same room.

But I have to say I'm really noticing the lag. You guys know I'm not going to BS about Android lagging, but really I catch the phone doing stuff in real slow motion for a second or 2 several times per day. It's random what it is. For example, just now I hung up a phone call and the animation where the call screen shrinks down you could almost count the frames it was so laggy. Maybe I have an errant app eating my RAM or something, but of course Verizon took away the ability to check stuff like that.

Currently on to Vodafone.
Not convinced with what they're saying to me.

I've changed my mind on colour, and gone for blue, which I feel really happy about.

The girl I spoke to read my notes from the previous call (so instead of cancelling and paying the termination fee and starting again with a new line, I was just upgrading early), and literally ordered me a new preorder it would seem.

I was told the tariff was now £58 instead of £57 (not really bothered but found it odd), which is obviously reduced through corporate perks.
Then I mentioned the £20 one off cost I paid for the new connection which is going to be cancelled as I'm now upgrading... she said she'd transfer me to a different department for that...

Now I'm on to the new department, he has said the £20 will go back on as a credit to my acc for a bill, not as money into my bank account. No biggie, but annoying.

Really not filled with confidence at all. I have asked about 4 times when I will get confirmation of the order and he said it will be shortly, but no email (only just got off the phone in fairness).
Then the woman I spoke to said the phone will arrive Tuesday (?) but when I asked the guy then he said 3-5 days (no clue).

They haven't billed me £20 for the upfront cost for the upgrade, nor have they charged me the early upgrade fee (£169).

Not filled with confidence in the slightest.

Vodafone is just across the street from CPW so I'll nip over on my lunch tomorrow to find out if they have an order on the system for me.

I hate to hear that. Are you saying Verizon took away this screen?

My phone froze up as well too last night. I came out if my house and switched the camera on to take a night shot andbit just froze on the camera screen for a good minute or two. I did notice that this occurred when my phone was losing the wifi connection and switching to the cellular network. But the lag is real regardless of major issues

Yep they completely took away device maintenance.

This has happened to me twice so far. It happened once to my wife, with a subsequent auto reboot. I'm not sure if wifi was an issue, but you reminded me of another gripe. Samsung phones are terrible at handing off the wifi to cellular, hasn't improved on the Note 7. My driveway has weak wifi, but Samsung hangs onto it like there is no tomorrow. So when I program Waze in my driveway it always tells me there is no network, and I have to literally drive several blocks away so it registers that I'm on cellular.

Don't get me wrong I love the phone and am keeping it, but I really haven't seen Samsung step up and fix their software yet in all the time I've had Notes.

Wow. That's terrible. I use that all the time. Probably unnecessarily but I like messing with it to at least feel like I'm controlling some of that stuff.

I'd be really curious to see which Carrier's phones are the buggiest. That would explain some of the inconsistencies we are seeing in performance.

I'm also noting apps sometimes open very slowly, like the titlebar of the app will come up, the rest of the screen is white like its loading and then it takes a good half minute to fully populate. So far this has happened with OneNote, Bluemail and just as I was typing this with ES file explorer. No idea, I think I'm going to do a factory reset tonight and see if it helps.

Great....if you disagree with the article on PhoneArena....you should email the writer....

I found the 6s+ battery to be better than the Note 5 as well. Nothing scientific to back it up, I just always had more juice at the end of the day.

Good luck. Definitely not usual behavior there. Damn you Verizon

I did too....But I didn't write the article.
The 6s+ has been the battery king for me except for the Huawei Mate 8. The Mate 8 could go 2.5 full days on a charge.

:( that sucks! But this sounds like what my Verizon Galaxy S6 always did. About once a day, it would slow down so much to the point where opening an app would take longer than 30 seconds and the whole system was laggy to the point where you couldn't even swipe home pages or open the app drawer. Most of the time, it would happen after I finished a run where I was using MapMyFitness+ and Spotify at the same time... so I always chalked it up to the poor RAM management of Samsung phones. But it did this about once a day for the ~6 months I had it. And I would start each day with a fresh reboot too. But you might try taking it back to Verizon to see if you can get a new unit. I had to return my GS6 to Verizon twice due to hardware issues with the front facing camera and they were quick to replace (albeit, I had to wait for the replacement device to come via mail).

Yeah I may swap it out, Costco lets me swap once with no questions asked. I was just waiting for the BOGO and Samsung rebates to be fulfilled as I didn't want any issues with having a new phone with a new IMEI. But that sounds like what mine is doing.

Interesting that you say that sammy phones are terrible at handing off the connection because both my and my wife's phones seem to get all crappy when we go into a bad wifi area from a good one. I'm keeping the phone as well, i'm willing to live with some of the lag and other tiny issues i've had to get the added functionality that android and the Note in particular provides. Love the phone so far

I wish Samsung would do a beta program... similar to what Apple does to help fix whatever issues that users might have, but then carriers will get in the way.

Oh they do a beta program, and we are ALL enrolled!!
[doublepost=1472246541][/doublepost]BTW you guys know ROOT was achieved? Yes on the US carrier models. Seems like a straight forward and painless process, doesn't trip Knox or anything. No bootloader unlock yet. Unsure if things like carrier VoLTE, wifi calling, Samsung pay, etc still work or not. I'm going to play with it tonight, since I'm factory resetting anyway I'll try and root and report back.

Are these lag and keyboard issues things that Samsung typically fixes in an update? This is my first Sammy device so just wondering what to expect

That's giving Samsung too much of a pass, IMO. Marshmallow has been out for nearly a year now so Samsung has had plenty of time to fine tune and optimize. It's using the same CPU as the Galaxy models, 2 phones that have been out for months also running Marshmallow and I don't recall hearing about these types of performance issues, or at least not until this degree.

I think some of the forum members here who are not Samsung's biggest fans are certainly trying to make more out of it than what's really there but at the same time, it's pretty clear some owners are seeing performance issues and considering the previously mentioned circumstances, I don't think Sammy deserves a pass either.

Regardless, the obsession with lag is getting pretty tiresome. Seems like we have the exact same discussions for every single major phone release. Why aren't we focusing more on what great things the phone can do vs. these picayune little incidents?

Agreed. Great example is the Android System battery drain that the S7E has. I'm back on the 6s Plus again but to my knowledge it hasn't been fixed and there's been no way for users to have open dialogue with Samsung regarding the battery drain.
