I agree, they will be working on getting out of this hole for a while. The problem is, even if they loss the Note line will their name alone still keep people away from the S8? I mean I know people that have heard the exploding stories, but all they know is it was a Samsung phone. They have no idea it's the Note. All people will see is a new Samsung phone. Kind of hard to remove that reputation in just a few months.

Oh it's going to be tough, and the media will be very tough on them when they release the S8.

So let's pretend I'm crazy enough to keep using my second issued Note 7 after I turned my first in under recall; do you think there is any chance the phone would continue to get software updates? Having used this line of phone since the Note 2 I'm really struggling with the thought of moving on to a different phone. I'm contemplating the S7 edge or just jumping ship back to Apple with the 7+.

Yep, and I think they should. I get that something went wrong and that sucks, but trying to cover it up. They need to feel the repercussions of that mistake. They should have been way more open, but I see their side too. Who knows if other OEMs would have done anything different.

Let's just say that I give better odds to Finland's national football team making it to a major tournament :p So far that has never happened.

Never going to happen.

Note 5 still gets the job done.

No you won't get updates. Why would Samsung produce updates for a device they no longer sell ?

Plus if anything happened to your Note 7 and it caused damage you would not be covered by any insurance company because you ignored the recall, you would void any insurance because you made yourself liable / culpable. It's simply not worth the risk to yourself or anyone else, no matter how good you think the device is.

Not to mention the fact that if it did explode on a flight, you would be held responsible because you did not turn it back in. Also if your house caught on fire because of it, and it was found out. You would get nothing. That is very dangerous.

If I ever win another flagship phone in any sort of a competition, I'll let you guys know so you can prepare for the inevitable recall.

Did you win a Note 7? Sorry I have not been following this thread until recently.

This was going to be the phone Samsung was going to send me to use for a year and provide feedback for. It was on that program they had going, and if I did it they would give me the phone for free. As we can see that never happened, and I guess it won't. I was really looking forward to it. I guess I let you guess know if they ask me again to do that. We can't expect the phone to explode.

Yes I did. I just would've had to write a couple of reviews about it and after that it would've been mine to keep. Of course it would've counted as income for taxation, but still it would've been an almost free flagship.

Is this biggest phone debacle ever?

Not at the level as iPhone 6 and 6 Plus touch disease defect that's impacting a much greater number of people with multiple class action lawsuits across the globe. May even be less than iPhone 7 and 7 Plus depending how fast Apple can fix the hardware and software defects that's causing all the exchanges and returns and shipping to be delayed into December.

Did you get it on that program from last year where you got to test run the phone for a month? I got that same offer and was going to get the Note 7, just had not heard anything back yet. I guess that will be the end of that. Lol

Possibly. Nothing comes close. Nokia and Sony Ericsson both once had to suspend sales of the N97 and Satio in 2009, if I remember correctly, but it was due to minor build issues, and there was the Nokia Battery recall for the BL-5C found in the N70, N91, E60 and some others, that could explode, but guess what? You could REMOVE those batteries, and it was barely a scratch on Nokia thanks to that.

Amazing that it took this long to happen, you barely ever heard of Nokia, Sony Ericsson, MOTOROLA etc... Phone batteries exploding back in the early 2000s.

I guess with these manufacturers trying to super slim these devices, make the more functional and more powerful it was bound to happen. I hope Samsung learnt a valuable lesson here, what a shame!

I think that program was available only in the US. I (almost) got mine from a competition organized by a Finnish carrier.

The Note 7 is such a tragedy. I never thought it would get this bad. This year was Samsung's year to lose, and they lost it.

Let's also not ignore what a gift this is to Apple, Google, and any other OEM who could be capitalizing on this (LG, Huawei...). The timing is incredible: During a year in which Apple sees slowing sales and a modest new iPhone; during a year in which Google is, for the first time, seriously getting involved in hardware. What a gift from Samsung to help both those companies in such a critical year.

The next step for them? Nail the S8 and S8 Edge. Keep pushing the technology that no one else is pushing, have a successful launch, and be 100% sure you QC your production line this time. Do not rush the S8 out early to make up for the Note 7.

In theory, the S8 should be the most QC-ed device. The scrutiny will be harsh. The first exploding S8/Edge will make headlines so they better be as buttoned up as they can.

Well that's that! What I considered the phone closest to perfection is gone! On to the S8! Then again, I did once post a while back, that they should cancel the Note line and introduce a Galaxy S Pro line instead. Here's the perfect time to make that change.

You think Samsung releasing a device that catches fire, recalls it and rushes it back out to market and then is forced to stop producing it is less of a debacle than a screen that stops working after 2 years? It's a design flaw that doesn't pose any danger to the consumer whereas the N7 was pulled due to serious safety grounds.

I think your unhealthy dislike for Apple is affecting your judgement here as it does in most threads.
