http://www.theverge.com/2016/10/12/...why-the-note-7-keeps-catching-fire-nyt-claims

"Samsung also banned emails between testers, the NYT says, making it harder for engineers to communicate their theories or findings with each other about where the problems lay. The company reportedly feared legal action if written communications were to fall into the wrong hands, and told employees to keep their messages to each other offline. Samsung's corporate culture could also have contributed to the problem, and its delayed discovery — the NYTsources two former Samsung employees who say the company was "militaristic," with orders coming from seniors who may not understand the technology actually used in the company's products."

Seems Samsung really doesnt have a clue why the phones are exploding.I hope that whatever factor is causing this undiscovered flaw isnt there in the S8.Otherwise.....

Considered it, but 1, no phone is worth endangering my family, and 2, if something were to happen i would be liable for the damages instead of Samsung.

I totally get wanting to keep it. If Apple had an issue, and they told everyone they had to turn in their iPhone 7 and 7+, it would be really hard to give up. It's the phone you have come to love, and you really don't want something else.

My thing is, how likely is it your phone would explode if you kept it? Is it something that down the road no matter what it will explode, or are their conditions that would have to be meet for it to happen? These are the things we need Samsung to tell us. We need to know what the problem is. I would almost say hold on to it for another week or so and see if Samsung says what the issue was. Then you could actually make an educated decision on what to do. Like you said though, is any phone worth your safety and your families safety. Jaime at Pocketnow is considering keeping his Note 7 to see if he make make it to their after the buzz story after 3 months. It's a gamble for sure.

My Note 7 was my first android phone, coming from an iPhone 6+. It was the only android phone I was excited about. Now that I require a refund, what phone should I look to get now? I was looking to get a smartwatch too for the Note. I'm almost tempted to just wait for next year's 10th anniversary iPhone and buy one of those and get an apple watch in the meantime.

Galaxy S7 is still on point. I was just going to keep my note 7 but oculus dropped the support with the gear vr

Buying the AW and waiting is not a bad idea, but I lot of people love the S7. Said it was just a smaller Note 7 without the S pen. Either would be good buy. I am using an iPhone and love my AW, so I would lean that way, but you can't go wrong with the S7 either.

Were the Note specific features, namely the slightly larger display and S-Pen, the reason for your preference for the Note? Sadly, you're not going to find the S-Pen functionality replicated anywhere else. If it was the size/form factor, any reason why you wouldn't consider the Galaxy S7 edge? All indications are that it has even better battery life too.

If you stick with Samsung, I'd suggest either the Gear S2 or wait for the Gear S3 (to be release in the next month or two, I believe). I'm using a Huawei watch with my Nexus and while I find the design terrific, Android Wear doesn't work nearly as well as watchOS. The Gear S2 receives lots of praise around here--only shortcoming seems to be third party apps. I'd personally love to have the rotating bezel on my smart watch.

If you ultimately do return to the iPhone, I highly recommend the Apple Watch. The latest version of watchOS has transformed the utility of that smartwatch--was the biggest reason I held off switching from my iPhone to the Nexus 6P (and soon to the Pixel XL).

This is what I think are going to be the things that keep people from being able to keep the Note 7. Everything is going to stop supporting it, and Samsung maybe send out an updated that bricks it.

Thanks for all your responses. I loved the size of the note and its curves were just enough for me. I dont really want to buy a S7E since its getting close to the S8. May just be a case of waiting now

So it still sounds like they think the batteries were the issue right? The second batch had issues too.
Possibly, but they're still not sure. I just thought it was funny how they said it was because there was too much innovation in it that it became too complex.

Also, I would think it's more than just the batteries seeing as how they are completely disposing of the Notes they get back.

Maybe before I return it I should see if any collectors want it?

Is anyone seriously considering keeping their Note 7? I am just curious because right now there is no one forcing people to do so. Is it worth the danger for some to keep it?

Oh I definitely thought about keeping it. What other phone even comes close to it? But as others mentioned the safety of my family is paramount. We'll see what the next cycle brings, but you can be sure that Samsung will be extremely careful with their next moves.

I'm not sure I'd consider the S7 edge as from what I hear the false touches on it are much worse than the Note 7. I really had virtually no false touches on the Note 7, quite impressive.

I've got a SS AW2 I just scored last night, but I don't know if I'll keep it yet.

Totally agree. Family is much more important then keeping a smartphone.

Earlier today I was charging my iPhone 7 in the middle of the work day because I had been using it all morning. It had been sitting charging for about 10 minutes, and I picked it up. It was really hot, and I was not doing anything special with the phone. Because of all the Samsung stuff, it really made me think. I don't think it was going to exploded, but it sure did put it into the back of my mind. I think Samsung's issues might have brought to light a bigger issue then just Samsung. Sure I think the rushed phone played a big part, but this crappy battery tech is finally catching up.

I think this is going to push the industry forward. I think it's going to force companies to rethink these thin phones with all this tech, and then throwing in some crappy battery. It's time we move forward with batteries and maybe this was the thing that makes it happen. I hate that it was at the cost of Samsung, but I think they made some mistakes and need to fix somethings other then just what happened to the Note 7.

Aghhhh, this just royally is not cool. So I was thinking of going with the LG V20. Went to ATT today to check one out since they have them on display. Played with it for awhile. It was just okay. Definitely not as sexy of a phone as the Note 7 is. Not even close. The interface/android skin is just kind of blah as well. It is the exact same size as my Nexus 6P. What to do, what to do. I may just end up back on the iphone train again despite not wanting to really be there. I know I will want the iphone 8 anyways (or whatever Apple calls it), so maybe I will just sign up with the iPhone upgrade program. (Would have to give up my Jump on Demand with Tmobile though. Decisions, decisions)

I actually never got the fact that these thin little phones have these powerful lithium batteries in there in the first place. I run RC cars as a hobby and have plenty of lipo batteries. You know how I charge those up? In my garage, by themselves on the cement floor inside of a fireproof bag with a fire extinguisher nearby. And I inspect the case each time before charging to make sure there is no swelling at all. This is how you are instructed to charge these things.

But here we are with the same type of batteries in our phones and we charge them day in and day out right next to our bed or even in our bed at night without nary a thought about it. Hum...

I'm a bit shocked...recall you seriously hated the Apple Watch form factor. Very curious to hear your impressions. :D

Lol I do kind of dislike it. I'm just trying to immerse myself into iOS instead of complaining. I've come to terms with returning to iOS, but I just don't know if the watch floats my boat.

Yep, and it's pretty scary. This is not just a Samsung problem either. It's time these companies put some R&D into battery tech, and put out a quality battery with the amazing hardware.

Come on, you know you love the AW. I have to say it's my favorite piece of tech I own. I have always loved watches, and when smart watches started to become popular I knew I had to get one. Apple to me has created the best one so far, and I really have enjoyed mine.

I'm far from in love with it like I was with some of the android wear and Samsung watches I've had, but I have to give it some time. I hated the 7+ but now I'm liking it more every day. It's all muscle memory I suppose.

I'm having a little chuckle here after following this conversation. For so long you were pretty staunchly planted in the Android camp (and I understand you still prefer it in so many ways) while I was generally the polar opposite, living immersed in the Apple world, for the most part. Yet here we are, you rocking an iPhone and an Apple Watch while I've packed mine up and moved firmly back into Android, pairing it with an Android Wear watch. Hell, I even own a tablet/convertible running Windows 10. Must be some signs of the upcoming apocalypse. :p:D
