I recieved mybox today
I wonder if folks have forgotten up till launch there were two Note 7 models, the curved which was launched and of course the flat model which was the one sighted in most of the leaks.

I wonder had the flat model been launched would it have suffered from whatever design flaw / issue the curved N7 suffered ...

If ever there was a what if scenario .... and many of us here would have preferred the flat version anyway.

----

I'm trying to decide whether to buy a cheap N5, the 32gb storage is the biggest hurdle without SD card support though. I'll likely just wait now till the S8, keep the S7 till then.

V20 isn't coming here
Pixel isn't coming here anytime soon

So not really anything in the near future worth jumping to ....
Do you have to pay a bunch of taxes if you were to import from another country?

You may get a V20? If so doesn't it still have that loop fault?

Don't know. I've never actually bought an LG phone as I've traditionally detested LG's skin, but I'm fascinated by the V20's camera and audio DAC.

The chances of me getting one are slim though in fairness.

Depends on where it ships from. If you get caught for tax it will work out at nearly 1/4 (23% here) of the cost of the device though so it can be very pricy.

For example it's €790 or thereabouts on import which is expensive enough, if you got caught for tax you would be looking at another €200 on top of that.

In my state everything I buy from ebay/online that comes from China or where ever I dont pay anything and no online tax! Stuff bought locally in person has a 6.5% tax, there is also a sales tax on used vehicles

Those of you who returned your Note 7's, what did you keep? The first time we returned, we naively gave back all the stuff. This time we kept everything and even stripped the S pen out as souvenirs. AT&T just got back the phone itself.

I kept the micro usb to usb C adapters, but returned the rest.

hopefully no other cellphone makers have to go through what samsung is going through. let this be a lesson to all cell phone makers to not to try to beat a competitor to the market if that is what happened here. also i think that there should be more testing of all smartphones before they are launched. also i thought that the note 7 looked pretty neat even though i prefer iphones.

For the 1st replacement, I only returned the phone. On Monday, after I receive my Note 5, I'm returning only the phone. So, the s pens (I know they don't fit in the N5, the fast chargers, and the earbuds all will work with my N5. The USB type c cables will sit it a drawer for someday...

I just wonder if the Flat Note 7 that they developed side by side would have had the issue, the rumors prior to launch indicated both devices, and then as closer to unveil the rumour changed to just the edge model being released. With all the flat Note 7 leaks (it was the flat model that leaked photo wise) it would be really interesting to know if 'what if' that had been launched instead. Would the issue have arisen ? (Seeing as Samsung evidently claim to not know what the actual cause is still).

It's too late to launch the flat N7 now, but if it turns out that it doesn't have whatever flaw the Edge model did, could they rebrand it and release it under a different name ? Could be a way of plugging the void and using the stock of components they have... (I know it's unlikely, but what if ..... :( )

Yeah, supposedly the problem was that everything was packed too tightly which didn't give the battery enough breathing room and caused it to warm up. Though that hasn't been confirmed, just what I've seen. And a flat model would've been slightly wider, possibly giving the components more room inside which may be all the extra room needed to not over heat.

Going back to the 5, I really do prefer the flat screen, even though the curved edges look so incredibly slick, the flat screen is just so much easier to use. I've been playing a lot of Animation Throwdown, and after the ads play there is a small x on the corner to close the ad. With the Note 7 that x appeared on the curve, and it was a pain to touch, sometime it wouldn't register while other times it took me to the app store to install the app it was advertising. Haven't had that problem with my Note 5.

After seeing it person, I think the Sony XA has the perfect size bezels on the side with a flat screen. I hope other OEMs copy this.

Sigh, why do you lot believe everything you read? Samsung have stated they do NOT currently know what's wrong, yet someone somewhere claimed its because the phone was too small, someone who most likely had absolutely nothing to do with Samsung or its design team or test team or suppliers network, and you run with it? Is it because it just sounds plausible?
It could be the wood of the pallets used to transport one of the chemicals used in the battery make up! Yes seriously it can be something like that, may need to heat treated but they weren't and it affected the chemicals.

It can be one of so many thousands of things if they don't know what it is, it will take them a while to find out, and FYI in my opinion if it was the physical size of the device, or 'rushing to market' then you would have one hell of a lot more devices then less then 1% of those sold having problems!

Sigh, why do you lot believe everything you read? Samsung have stated they do NOT currently know what's wrong,!

Which is what I said in my post ...

I merely hypothesised if when they work out what it causing it, if it turned out the flat Note 7 they developed side by side with the edge model doesn't have whatever issue is causing it, could they potentially launch that model even if it's under a different moniker .....

As for not believing what we read, should that include when Samsung stated officially after first recall they isolated issue to batteries from Samsung SDI ? ;). So much for waiting for official statements, because clearly those official statements can be wrong or misleading too ....

Additionally, this site is MacRumors. It's based on technology rumours and conjecture, if we have to wait until official announcements before anyone discussed anything, this would be one hell of a boring forum. It would be MacFacts not MacRumors.

This isn't about rumours, people are claiming to know what causes the phones to fail like they are experts, or because a random person on the internet pretends to be one, it's like reading about a plane crash in the newspaper and then claiming to know the exact cause of its crash without ever having worked in the aviation field.
Of course you should wait for official explanations, surely Samsung would of have to of proven to the CPSC that it had fixed the problem and hence the re-release of the phone, no cover ups, because the CPSC forced the recall right? Now as these are the people who investigate these things and build and design them, they have a lot more experience and inside insight to the issue. Let's not forget here, less then 1% of phones sold have had a fault, even less then that of the replacement phones, perhaps they felt they found a fault, which they may well have done, and all parties involved felt confident enough that the issue was fixed.

I think it needs to be said when people are expressing their opinions or hypothesis about all this, otherwise it reads as though it's fact sometimes.

I wonder if there was something about the iris scanner being packed in there that caused problems. If so, Apple needs to pay attention if the rumors are true and they intend to put an iris scanner inside the iPhone 8.

I'm not so sure they should go ahead with that. I'm not kidding, the iris scanner did make my eyeballs feel a bit odd (a bit heated up like you would expect from shining a bright beam of light on an eye) which was one reason I never turned it back on in my replacement Note 7. I would imagine it was safe enough but what if something went wrong and the next debacle was damaging people's eyes. Okay now I'm spreading FUD!

I did have a lot of fun using the iris scanner while I used it and it did work very well in dim lighting when when I wear my glasses. My glasses have anti reflective coating. Plain glasses might not fare as well.

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
Take this video, the guy who had to remake his video of the Note 7 scratch test because he got it all wrong, here he is with a video titled:

'Note 7 Battery Explosion!! CAUGHT LIVE ON CAMERA!! Repleat with explosive thumbnail picture.

Yet that title is pure clickbait, the video shows the battery catching fire alright, after he tears it apart and pokes it with metal tweezers! And then he proclaims his theory of what happened, meh I guess your free to hypothesise on the causes but I find it silly to do so after placing a click bait video title:

I don't think that is the issue because mine doesn't get hot, not even with fast charging (note 7 in Canada can still fast charge to 100%).
Yep. My Note 7 didn't even warm up really.
My S7 edge on the other hand....

My definition of an explosion has changed now.
Before the Note 7 issues, an explosion was violent and sudden.
Now its slow and doesn't even have to have particles separating from the volatile centre....

My S7Edge runs cool so far but the S7 loaner was a hot potato. My first Note 7 was cool but the second started overheating the last couple of days that I had it, though it always overheated during fast charging since day 1.

Something has to be accounting for these variances but what?

Yeah, I have no idea.
My Note was always cool to touch, the warmest it ever got was using VR, but was still cooler than my Note 5 and S7 edge.
I'm kinda over it now, the S7 edge has a noticeably better battery, if it had USB C, I'd only miss the spen and I do still think the squarer corners of the Note looked nicer.
The s7 is a bit warmer but it's better than I thought it'd be....

Yeah Gear VR really made my S7e blazing hot. Never bothered using it with my S7 since switching from the e to the regular s.
