I've been trying to imagine scenarios where an iris scanner would be useful, as the father of a 7 month old, I think it's going to rock if it works okay. There's so many instances where I only have one hand free, if done right, Samsung might be onto a winner. I'm guessing it probably will be okay considering how smart stay seemed to work okay, and that was on a S3.

Here's hoping......

I guess I still don't understand how an iris scanner is more useful than a fingerprint reader. If you only have one free hand, you're still holding the phone and using the FP scanner means the phone is unlocked before you ever look at it. If both your hands are unavailable, how exactly are you going to navigate once it's open? And that video shows the user having to swipe away the notifications?

Seriously, give me a useful, realistic scenario where that's a better way to unlock the phone.

I'm in Canada, anytime fall and winter come around the mitts and gloves go on. Perfect time for the iris scanner. Then let's not forget wet/dirty/sweaty hands at the beach, pool, gym, and while cooking. Again iris scan to the rescue. I'm totally living this.

Great, you unlocked your phone. How are you going to use it with those gloves on or with those dirty hands? And how did you manage to swipe away the lock screen notifications?

Really? You're serious with those questions? Think a little harder rather than trying to look for ways to discredit it.

I just tried unlocking with one hand only using the fingerprint scanner and let's just say I'm not too keen on dropping my phone, it was klutzy at best.
If the fingerprint scanner was embedded in the centre of the screen, maybe, but it's not.
Also, an iris scanner isnt reliant on one hand only, so no matter which hand I'm holding my phone, in, I can unlock it.

For me, any scenario with one handed use and a working iris scanner would trump a fingerprint scanner, except if the phone is lying down, and maybe even then.
I'm all for an iris scanner and I bet we'll see them on most large flagships if it works well on the Note.
There's my scenario, repeated, tell me I'm wrong.

Due to the size of the iPhone 6S plus I need two hands to unlock it. One to hold it and the other I put on the fingerprint scanner. I guess with the iris scanner you could hold it with one hand and unlock it by bringing it up to your eyes. However once it's unlocked I'd still need another hand free to navigate the phone which I don't often have these days as I have a newborn son. However in a pinch I can text one handed on standing up on a train so yes it would be useful.

Doesn't Samsung have a setting that allows you to use the phone with gloves on? Or have they done away with that now?

Because the Samsung fingerprint reader is rubbish and stops recognising my prints after 2 or 3 weeks.

Will the Iris scanner unlock be able to be used in conjunction with the finger print scanner? Basically, if I have the Iris scanner set, can I also use my finger to unlock when I'm not facing the phone. I unlock my phone plenty of times while not directly facing it. If it can't, then it's a fail no matter how fast or good it works. If it does work in conjunction, then the big question is ..... will the Iris scanner delay the finger print unlock?

No-one can answer that until we get proper hands on feedback.

I imagine if we see an August 2nd release, a few select reviewers will be sent Note 7 ahead of launch (likely have them now) so that they can have their reviews ready to go on launch day after their embargo has lifted.

Mine (note 5) works great with two hands or when it's laying down, it's not so good one handed.
I can imagine a smaller phone working fine one handed.
That doesn't help me though as I'm not going small again.
What phone do you have? My fingerprints were set up nearly a year ago, I play guitar and work on cars so my fingers aren't exactly the the neatest, my right thumb and index are my scanned fingers.

Looking at some of these renders and comparing with the s7 edge, it does seem the curve is less pronounced, in fact it looks similar to the curve on the back of the S7 Edge, so if you have one turn it around and feel the edges on the back.

Also, looks like there will be no camera hump.

There is hump on the earlier rear case leaks

How big it is will remain to be seen, bit i wouldn't imagine being very different from the S7 & S7 edge as its likely the exact same sensor part and therefore it's dimensions will not have changed.

There will be fireworks. It's bad enough people are already complaining that it likely wont be getting a processor and ram bump from the S7 & S7 Edge, but if it gets less battery than the S7 edge, after the 4200 mAh battery rumours previous, it's going to be very controversial release.
[doublepost=1469183817][/doublepost]
Must be a reason for why it's smaller if true

Possibly the iris scanner technology / parts use more room ? Also S-Pen maybe takes up room that they give to the S7 Edge fully .... Only a guess. ..

I imagine that this isn't true. Having a bigger screen size and a smaller battery doesn't add up. Unless battery consumption is remarkably less than the S7E

.

Remember the S-Pen takes up a significant portion of the chassis, something the S7 edge doesn't have to factor in.

Honestly- I may have to find a way to get over the edge. I'm loving this more and more.

Wow, the rumors mills totally disappointed this round:

SD82x -> SD820
5.8 screen -> 5.7
Nougat -> MM
6GB -> 4GB
4K battery -> 3.5

Only thing I am not clear on yet is storage size and type. That could be an improvement. And of course the first gen tech of the iris scanner.

But there was the unexpected twist that obviously the Note is now just the S7 Edge with an S-pen. Makes sense in hindsight since they pushed up the release and converged on the numbering.
