I don't think so but possibly ...
They are probably basing their decision based on the last two years of S sales and I imagine the S6 Edge / Edge + & this years S7 Edge outsold their flatter counterparts by big margin (based on my observation of resale availability it's clear there are vastly more S7e's than S7 for example).
Of course a strong desire for an S device with an edge doesn't mean that automatically translates to there being same desire for Note 7 edge version, but I imagine Samsung are clearly expecting it.
On the bright side it at least means the whole world gets the Note this year rather than there be two seperate devices.
I called it back in March when we saw the S7e had increased to 5.5 that there would not be a S7e +, however I didn't expect them to amalgamate Note 7 and Edge together.
Honesty it may work fine and hopefully they have improved false touches, the issue with accessories and in particular screen protectors could still be a pain in the bum, but hopefully the gorilla glass 5 will help prevent scratches (especially from sand and grit - it's worse enemies) more than GG4.
I actually think it will sell very well, especially given they did skip Europe last year.
The general lack of enthusiasm here is simply because most of us here have had 2016 flagship phones and in particular the S7 edge and other than iris scanner and s-pen and .3" the Note 7 doesn't represent an essential upgrade, and for those who have had issues with the edge, an added dimension of disappointment.
But for many the Note 7 will represent a decent upgrade to their existing devices. We just have to sadly accept that for us rabid tech addicts on the fora, that just isn't us.
The S7e is €799 here, the Note 7 will be €100 more so likely €899 here. Given my S7e which was still mint condition sold for €410 - there is no way I would justify spending a further €490 extra for what the Note 7 brings. Indeed for €490 I can actually buy a brand new sealed Note 5 and kept the S7e. It's this area of value and resale which is also a major stumbling block for me this year with phones (more so android phones), especially given what €400-500 buys you outright now.
But for those on contracts with subsidised handsets I imagine the Note 7 will still be expensive especially in lower priced monthly plans. The S7e is €450 on a €35 a month contract for 2 years here with Vodafone. We can expect the Note 7 to be a little more again, so €500-550. For a subsidised handset that's still very expensive given what €500 buys you off contract these days. For those on €55-75-100 a month contracts, the phone will obviously be much cheaper if not free on the top tier monthly contract.
So part of me thinks it will be a great success and another part of me thinks it's still got an uphill challenge.
We wait and see
