Don't pin your inaccurate and ignorant assumptions into me. If YOU incorrectly call a "beefed up GS3" the same as an Apple 'S' refresh, that's YOUR problem for not knowing how to comprehend, not me contradicting myself. I never ONCE made a statement that an S cycle phone was a beefed up iPhone and I never would.

You read what you WANTED to read and got all defensive because you have a simple way of thinking. That's not my problem.

A) An 'S' device is not a beefed up iPhone. 'S' cycle devices are, in my view, refreshes to maintain viability of a changing market for an iPhone design. Like a MacBook Pro with the same screen, shell and operating system that has an upgrade in ram and an SSD. It's essentially the SAME experience but with upgraded components to make it a viable option a year later.

B) A 'beefed up S3' is a phone that, at first glance, looks almost exactly like its previous version, but every component has been "beefed up". Are you going to sit there and DENY that the S4 borrowed a lot of its design from the S3? The similarities between the S3 and S4 are WAY more apparent than the S to S2 or the S2 to the S3. And this is NOT a bad thing either. Even the display was beefed up, both in size and resolution, but the housing remains within the same size/dimensions.

C) We're in an age of smart phones where ALL new phones are going to be like this. They've matured. There's no more new land to conquer. 5 inches with HD resolution, a quad core processor, lots of ram, lots of storage and a nice camera. That's the bar, you either meet it or join RIM. If you don't like people saying your fancy new phone is a beefed up version of last year's phone, go buy a time machine and go back to 2007 where all your innovation and new experiences are waiting for you. Me and the rest of 2013 and beyond are entering the era of yearly models.

You are delusional if you believe that, based on your definition, a "S" version of an iPhone is not a beefed up version of the phone that came before it.

The Verge gave it a lower score than the iPhone 4S...

Those were interesting reviews, not what I expected. All of them commented on the plastic design -_- I still think this is unfair when the HTC One is wrapped w/ plastic. The CNet review was pretty glowing though.

Are they reviewing the Qualcomm variant? Would like to see one for the Exynos model since some performance issues are one of the cons.

Great reviews, the S4 will be the biggest selling android device, but I'm glad we have the HTC One (and hopefully LG / Motorola this year too) that will offer choice to consumers and give Samsung some competition. It's clear from the reviews that the S4 is mighty, but it doesn't suddenly invalidate other 2013 flagship handsets and that's a good thing because Android would be terrible if it was a one horse race, much like how smartphones in general would be bad if there wasnt anything but the iPhone.

I certainly would be interested going forward in a Note 3 (assuming they do decide to go down a different route build materials wise) and the Motorola X / Nexus 5 have peaked my interest too.

I'll be due another upgrade from my carrier this year, so choice is great. Normally I save my upgrades for iPhones and buy out an android handset if I want one too. This year may be the year I don't get an iPhone at all, as I want a 4.5-4.8" screen and iOS 7 to be total refresh and almost certainly I'm not going to get that from apple this year. (If the only big hardware change is a finger print scanner? Wtf is this.. The 1990's......)

Surprised about just how mixed the reviews are for the S4.

They are (overall) positive - but highlight many many flaws in direct comparison to the HTC One.

It's quite interesting, as you'd perhaps expect Samsung to have just steamrollered their way through - but now there is a bit of competition, and they are also the big boys, maybe reviewers are starting to turn.

And I didn't realise the metal rim around the phone was actually metal-looking plastic!

The steamrolling will not be in reviews but in marketing of the s4. I guarantee it will be EVERYWHERE and Samsung will likely once again be 'the other phone' people buy - who don't buy an iPhone.

The HTC One will be the under-dog and will be ok sales wise, but at best it will be about 10% of what the S4 sells.

But as I say, I'm glad Samsung have some competition anyway :)

I don't understand peoples' lack of ability to comprehend what I said.

Where in my review did I say it was a S3-S or equivalent of Apple's S cycle phones?

And lastly, since when are Apple's S cycle phones bad? I actually think they're the most impressive of Apple's devices. I'm always happier with S phones. I sold my iPhone 3G like two months after I bought it, had a Kung Fu death grip on my 3GS. Same thing happened with the 4 and 5. They were sold but the 4S I had, I never wanted to part ways with it.

The US GS3 was a great phone and I loved it but I couldn't help but feel like, "I wish the processor was more powerful." Now I get that, a 1080p screen, .2" bigger viewable range. It looks almost exactly like an S3 but it has much better components. How is it incorrect to say it's essentially a beefed up S3?

People need to untangle their wires.

I'm sorry if I misinterpreted your post. Nonetheless, the S3 was a great phone, & I think all of us here have reason to believe the S4 will continue to carry on its legacy as one of the best android smartphones on the market. :)

Are you still getting? Did the verge change your mind?

It seemed like they were put under a microscope when pointing out those flaws. We shouldn't over react though, the reviews were good for the S4, if you are expecting the reviews to be perfect, you'll be disappointed.

Did you realize the plastic rim around the One is actually plastic =/

The Verge's review seems more than a little unbalanced. They make this big thing out of how horrible the design is, and give it a 5 for design......while the S3 got an 8??

The only thing I can think of is that other companies are upping their design for 2013, so still using plastic scores low. In 2012 it was still OK, but now it is not :)

I didn't even realise the rim around the s3 was plastic until someone pointed it out today. Oh well..

True but I can only imagine that the Xperia Z and HTC One's design have upped the ante for Android phones, and maybe the reviewer just wanted Samsung to step it up a bit.

In the end, these companies are still charging huge amounts for these phones (well, maybe not the Nexus 4) and if you're paying through the teeth, you'd expect certain things to be of a premium quality.

For me, the first thing I do is buy a case to protect it, so I'm perhaps not quite as bothered about aesthetics.

Struggling to choose between the HTC One and Galaxy S4

I prefer the UI on the Galaxy S4, but the build quality isn't really up to scratch. I'm used to having an iPhone and it'll be difficult to go from the glass and aluminium to flimsy plastic...

the HTC One has a much better build quality, the UI is decent, but the camera is shocking...

Anyone else having a similar choice, and is there any way to replace the back cover of the Galaxy to nicer ones (links to a website would be appreciated too)

thanks!
