I don't think any thought they couldnt, it was they wouldnt. Everyone knew Samsung had the chops to build a great phone like they did with the gs6, but that they didn't was the frustrating part. Imagine what the mobile space would look like if they had been building phones like this. Glad they finally stepped up and are living up to their potential.

Very true. I'm glad they did right when I am getting into the android scene! :)

So I went to my local Best Buy earlier to check out the S6 Edge, and boy was I disappointed. It's a very good looking device, don't get me wrong. But the edges are truly pointless. Content looks like it's floating on the display, which is super cool, but there's no added value really. And TouchWiz is honestly just as bloated and unappealing as it's always been.

Definitely not worth the ~$800+ asking price in my opinion.

Careful with that. The Sammy lovers are full hard on for this one and will come with the pitchforks and torches. Don't you dare speak ill will of the second coming of phone greatness.

IMO the display and form of the edge is FTW and I'll be ditching my iP5 shortly in favor of it. This will be my first time off of the apple universe so am a bit nervous.

Maybe it would be best for us to wait for the Note 5 edge release? I would assume the GS6 edge will have future enhancements to take advantage of the sides that potentially aren't there today. I would prefer to put a combo of apps and contacts on quick display.

For the longest time Apple charged more than other handsets because it was a premium phone with premium materials and premium design. The Apple faithful loved talking about the unibody design that didn't have a removable back for a replaceable battery. And that was fine because it was a premium design. Well, think of the Edge as a unique premium design for those that want something unlike anything else. And can afford the price of entry without thinking twice about it. Advanced designs cost money, if paying extra for such doesn't speak to you, stick with your cheaper built phone. Simple.

I should add, swiping in from the side has never been so smooth of a gesture. If you use Android, you know what I mean.

110% this.

If this was an apple product that charged premium pricing for such a unique experience no one would bat an eye. Heck they'd even defend it, I bet. They'd talk about difficulty in processing, material yield shortages, or just say it's for the amount of r&d involved, etc. We've heard it a bunch of times before .for apple.

And I think that's precisely why the edge will be a unique experience. I predict and will continue reiterating that the unique experience of the edge lies not in its edge features but in simply the use and interaction with the screen.

It's immersive, like using a wide screen smartphone, if you will. Its ability to make you sort of forget about the bezels including the top and bottom ones because the screen gives the sense that it pops outwardly towards you (or like you said "floating on the display"), making slide out and side swiping gestures more natural...

These things are what make the edge sing.

Whether that's worth the extra cost is up to people, but it's definitely not nothing.

Am I the only one finding this phone almost impossible to grab. It really cuts in your palms and feels like you are holding the phone on the wrong side.

That is why I'm leaning towards the standard GS6, it just feels so much better in hand.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Water Test - Secretly Waterproof/Resistant

The S6 Edge lasted over 25 minutes under water. But it did show effects of being under water that long. Still for quick unexpected drops in the water thats not bad.

Notice how fast he is able to unlock the phone with the fingerprint scanner! Thats TouchID fast!

Tough phone. Tougher than I expected for the amount of glass.

Seems like the next area of durability which should be improved is the edges/surround. Seems like we've mastered the front/back, at least the S6 has. As an aside, man I love the glass back. IMO the iPhone 4 was truly the last luxurious iPhone because of the glass back and I love to see someone else bring this back.

My experience was just the opposite. To properly register swipes from the edge, I hand to reach the very edge of the display, which meant reaching down the side of the device--was a much more unnatural than swiping from the edge of a traditional flat display and a more difficult maneuver with the longer reach needed. If I tried the gesture just from the point the screen curves downward, the swipe touch wouldn't register.

Nope, my sentiments as well. The edges on the side were very sharp and uncomfortable. And the excuse, 'it's nothing a case won't fix' doesn't work for me. I shouldn't have to put it in a case to make it comfortable to hold. I had same criticism, though to a lesser degree, for the HTC One M8 and iPhone 6/6+ and how slippery they could be when used naked. The standard S6 felt much more comfortable to both hold and use, IMO.

Fingerprint scanner was extremely fast and reliable. It was one of the things I tested thoroughly while playing with the phone at Tmobile. I went early in the morning and no one was there. Spent a good 15+ minutes with it.

TouchID is one of my favorite features on my 6+.
I can't wait to try it on the S6 Edge.

I can't wait to try it on the S6 Edge.

It was a good feature on my iPH 6 that I enjoyed too, but I eventually turned it off because it wasn't 100% reliable. Anytime my thumb was mildly cold, or mildly wet (like from a teeny bit of perspiration or if I had just washed my hand and it was only 99% dry), or whatnot, it wouldn't register. It failed way more times than I had liked, so I just turned it off and opted to go back to tried and true pin.

I also think the circular home button just isn't the optimal shape for fingerprint scanning. I actually think the elongated rectangle-ish S6's home button might be a better fit. I say this because when you're holding your device and you press the home button, your thumb is actually far more horizontal than anything. So the elongated home button might lend to greater "surface area" so to speak to read your thumb.

I'm not backpedaling on how impressed I was with the S6 fingerprint scanner, and my hope is that the S6 fingerprint scanner is more reliable than Apple's. I left the S6 with a good impression of it, but only by owning the device and using it day to day can one tell if it's truly reliable.

Watch for Samsung Pay later this summer. It should work on all card readers. Definitely a huge plus. They stepped up when they bought LoopPay and integrated it in the Galaxy S line.
