So it looks like they have a different take on the GS6 Edge from what they did with the Note 4. This looks more for a true edge to edge form factor. And as you can see, the back is glass. This thing should be a beauty in person. Bring on the Note 5.
Yeah it seems less gimmicky (novelty) and more aesthetically pleasing, and doesn't penalise a user fie being left handed.

Its peeked my interest - the standard model not so much (or at all from design POV).

If the M9 does come out as rumoured pics suggest - between all of them the S6 edge variant has my interest from design perspective.

An edge to edge screen rather than focusing on the screen and then the curved bit of screen (like Note Edge) is definitely a step forward. Caution turning to Hopefully optimistic ....

I dunno man, to me the wraparound screen thing will be gimmicky no matter if it's on one or two sides. The first thing I think of when picturing myself holding one of those is: "Aw, why can't all that screen area be facing me straight on?" On the sides it's really just wasted screen space unless they find some really worthwhile control scheme to go with it, which I doubt.

Gonna go ahead and be your opposite here, because the normal flat version is the one that's actually peaked my insterest :D That is, a black Note 5 with sleek sides and back like that might be quite the stunner.

Metal sides, glass back. Apple from 2010 wants their iphone 4 back

Seriously, this phone basically looks like a Galaxy S4

BTW the guy leaking these pics on XDA says you don't have to swipe to use the fingerprint reader, that would be quite the improvement.

Oh noes, the VERY SAME MATERIALS as another smartphone, please say it isn't so!!

In terms of general shape, sure it's not that different from a S4. It should look quite different in real life though, and certainly feel very different in the hand.

Edge would be the one I would go for but will just wait for note 5

My next device is note 8 inch if it happens or new S tab

It's not the biggest deal in the world and I'm not actually THAT fussed about design, but if those edges are real, they've blatantly ripped off the iPhone 6 and that's embarrassing.

The most important thing is how the phone performs, but from a design perspective that doesn't massively impress me and it's certainly not worth a price hike.

I think it depends how much curve there is to the edges. By the looks of it - not anything as much as Note Edge - it's more just giving you feeling of bezelless screen, but yeah would have to wait to see the ergonomic effect this has on user experience - especially given the reported extra cost.

TBH - I think this year is going to be exactly like last. There won't be a perfect phone - all of them will have trade offs and all designs will be relative minor evolutions of current handsets.

None so far have made me think I'd buy that NOW other than the Nice M9 renders before the reality ones kicked in.

Saying all this, the official teasers look rather different from the side.

Hmm,

Also if you were to leak a photo of the new devices, wouldn't you focus on the Edge version? At very least taking a picture that shows it clearly with the 2/3 sides?

Yep - it'll be the edge variant they will push for promo marketing sexy shots - but it'll be the regular version which will be the main pushed device at retail and through carriers.

wow, the edge looks great. I prefer it like this instead of the Note 4 edge way. I don't care about the information on the side bar, the way the S6 does it it's the closest to having no bezels. No bezels looks awesome, I just wish they got rid of the top bezel. I'm also bummed at no touch fingerprint sensor.

I don't know why you guys are so excited about the glass back.

I hate glass. It's slippery and breaks far easier than plastic. I hated it on my iPhone 4 and it's one of the reasons I don't like Xperia Z phones.

One of the only phones I actually broke over the years, was my Nexus 4. Which has a glass back

I agree, I am not on the glass or metal bandwagons. I am rough on my phones, I prefer durability to shiny/pretty. It is similar to a woman selecting a purse for style over functionality

Only way I would get an S6 would have to tick these three boxes in this order;

- #1 = Battery life. ( On par with the OnePlus One, any less and this phone is useless IMO )
- #2 = Unlocked bootloader. ( Root for Xposed, and custom ROM's )
- #3 = Touchwiz slimmed down ( Let's see a Motorola style Touchwiz, a very minimal skin over stock Android, or at least a Sense smaller RAM size UI )

One poster said the new Galaxy S6 hardware and screen will be more efficient, and said the S6 will have the same battery life as an S5 with a 4,000mAh extended battery. I will believe that when I see it.

Number #2 will be a no go. Unless Maybe the international model or TMO.
TW will not resemble stock Android ever....

All materials have pros and con's. Glass is easier to break/shatter, but is much more scratch resistant, metal is more durable but scratches and wear and tear are more visible, plastic hides scratches the best and is lighter but isnt as durable (if you drop a metal and plastic phone on its side, the glass of the plastic phone is more likely to break than the metal one) and rubber is the most durable, but is really thick.

That poster was being over zealous. Now if the screen was 1080p and it had the same amount of ram and clocked the same, then I could see it. But even though it will be more efficient, the higher res screen, higher clock speed, and more ram use more power. I would expect the same battery life, maybe slightly better, but nothing like that poster was saying.

Totally agree on the realistic battery life. Whoever mentioned the S6 is so much efficient, that it would equal an S5 with a 4,000mAh extended battery, I thought was crazy.

An S5 with 4,000mAh battery gets crazy great battery life, there's no way the stock S6 will get the same.

I'd be happy if it get's close to at the OnePlus One battery life.

Yep that's my perception regarding the edges compared to the Note Edge.

Samsung has officially said 14nm fin fet is 30% more efficient then 28nm s801 in the old gs5.

They also said the screen will use more then 14% less power using new phosphors in the screen.

Do the math!

If nothing else changes you have a package using on average 44% less power then the old gs5

But the package HAS changed. The ram is more energy efficient, but it is now clocked higher and there is more of it, so that negates the energy savings.

Same with the screen, it may take less power to light up each pixel, but there are now more pixels to light which will again negate the energy savings.

Also, you can't just stack the energy savings, it doesn't work that way.

Now if they kept everything the same then you would see those energy savings.

Your math is a bit weird, as you ad 14 and 30 percent and state it as 44 percent, but as the display is using a LOT more power than the processor, your math isn't really good.

I think it will be something around 20% in reality..
