For me, I would get a Samsung over another competitor just to root and install custom ROMS on it. I am still a newbie at that with Android although I began jailbreaking iPhones early on once I had it.
Geohot's app is so easy to root a Samsung. When I flashed a ROM on my Xiaomi the other day, I wasn't sure if I bricked it or not. It went haywire for awhile. I had to keep deleting things. After a couple days using 4.4.4 AOSP by Ivan, I must say I love it while my phone got rooted in the process. I am not even on the latest one. My battery went back to the norm or even better. No graphical glitches from MIUI 5 or touch sensitivity issues from MIUI 6 and bad RAM management are now gone. I can now use certain apps like DynamicNotifications (older apk for less RAM usage) and WakeLock Detector to check my SOT. I will miss some of MIUI customization and it does look more interesting than vanilla Android. But better RAM management (800+ MB free left instead of under 600) and smoothness is why I want to use AOSP from now on. And nomore needing to reboot or turn off the phone every 1-2 days to clear RAM. Performance over design any day.
That S6 Variant does excite me a little more. I am curious what the dev community can do with it and the type of apps they can make for it. Once you get a Samsung, use Towelroot and make it rain!
