Are you gonna keep the S7 Edge?

If you like it, instead of the Nexus 6P just get the Nexus 6 for cheap if your intentions were you wanted to mess around with Android N. I took my 6 out of the drawer and loaded it with N it it will suffice.
I am not sure tbh. I have the N5 ,6P and 6s+. The S7 edge is the smallest of the bunch.
I had N preview running on the 6P but had a few app closures so flashed it back to stock.

I think it is important to note that giving the customer the ability to unlock the bootloader does not impact the security of that same device when the bootloader is still locked. Even the modern phones that can be unlocked don't ship unlocked. When you unlock them it wipes the device, so it can't be used to gain access to data on a stolen device or something

enterprise is probably using mdm that can see the bootloader status anyway, but you still have a point. I feel like it's Samsung pay that pushed them over the edge, there id argue they should have implemented the system like Apple did, where the integrity of the system is irrelevant to Apple pay..it is still safe and separate from the system

:(

This post from reddit is great
I can unlock the BL on my N5 and flash away. But what do I gain? I dont want to have to do all that on my expensive smartphone. I want it to have the features I want out of the box so to speak. Then there are a lot of other phones to get if unlocking and flashing are wanted. The Nexus line is great for that.

I don't feel the need to modify nexus devices funny enough, when I buy my next nexus device there is a good chance I would keep it locked and unrooted.

If I buy a Samsung I would want root to clean it up though. And eventually I would want an unlocked bootloader when Samsung stops supporting the device after 2 years so I can get updates

That's fair! So you don't get the Samsung device for the features but just the hardware?

Tens of millions huh? If you want an unlocked bootloader..... Don't buy a Samsung phone. The writing has been on the wall for this for a few years. If you want unlocked bootloader then get a Nexus or Motorola or any of the import brands. It's that simple.

LOL, I heard every single Galaxy S7 will now be returned because of lack root, sales will plummet, and this will make HTC the #1 Android manufacturer moving forward.

Of course I know the Android root crowd makes up 1% of sales at best. Whereas 99% of Joe Public doesn't even know what Tocuhwiz is, or that they are running Lollipop, and should be waiting for Marshmallow, where they'll look at you like you crazy high talking about candy names and Android robots.

It pretty much just comes done to the Nexus line once again, if you want to be guaranteed the best Android experience, as it was meant to be, ultimate freedom, no ads, complete customization, then the Nexus line with root and custom development, is the only option left. Samsung, LG, HTC, etc... maybe might have a phone or two than can be rooted, but don't count on it.

Samsung non rooted is now like the boring lame iPhone. I bow my head in silence, and the tragic loss that losing Samsung is to the development community. The old Note 2 days are long history now, tiss the a sad day indeed :( :( :(

Probably because it didn't sell well? Just a guess.

The fact they made it so hard to buy, plus it was unavailable through carriers and more expensive than the touchwiz variant, combined that no-one outside of tech community knew it even existed couldn't have helped.

I do think if Samsung stuck a stock android on their flagships and packaged TW launcher and TW apps as optional downloads via the App Store, both sides of the equation would be well catered for. That way users would get quicker app and launcher updates keeping them more up-to date regardless of android version, and in theory easier rollout of android updates too.

Sadly won't happen.

Android N is leveling the playing field by finally adding some of TouchWiz's best features.

It'll be interesting to see if Google can also provide the hardware chops.

People can't have it both ways with more features that require additional security and the ability to root their phones etc. You have to pick one or the other and then not complain about your choice whatever way it goes.

With the rumored Google + HTC Nexus deal for three years, I think the Nexus program, potentially looks very bright.

Imagine a high end smaller sized Nexus phone from HTC, and a another Huawei phablet Nexus phone. And with all the great changes and updates coming with Android N, finally adding Touchwiz like features to stock Android.

Google just needs to advertise the Nexus 2016 line much better, and put them back in carrier stores again, and it's easy, don't let the carriers control updates, there's ZERO reason for that, just treat them like Apple's iPhone, where updates come down directly from Apple, NEVER the carriers with the iPhone. Goggle just needs to do the same on the new Nexus phones.
[doublepost=1457886180][/doublepost]Someone else brought up a good point;

You're leaving out the part about getting updates, which Samsung sucks at.

Remember the note 2 went 18 months from release without an update...then got one...then was abandoned. A rooted or ROM'd phone with the latest AOSP security patch is still more secure than RTM bone stock, which odds are the S7 will have for a long while. Plus the S7 won't be seeing Android N till like April 2017, whereas the Nexus will get it in September 2016. And the S8 will launch with a new version of Touchwiz, and while yes the S7 will get an update, it won't get that same S8 Touchwiz, just the Android version only.

Samsung looks at phones over 12+ months old, as outdated and forgotten garbage, they rather you trade it in for the latest S or Note, to get the newest Android version and features. And a Samsung phone that's 18 months to 24 months old, LOL, you're SOL.

Yup the potential is there.

I don't think stock Android is how Google intended it to be. It is pretty feature less to be honest. They wanted to be as it is and depend on their OEM partners to add features. The beautiful thing about Android is choice. If one company doesn't have what you want there is another around the corner that might.

It is funny that most here want companies to take more control over the Android end user experience something like Apple does. But when that starts to happen people complain about it.
Android has a long way to go to get more timely updates to be sure. But most core apps are released with the newest featureset and design through the play store.
I see Android going through growing pains as it tries to evolve. Sometime in the future....either Google or a Android OEM will have to control the whole end to end user experience on their own. From updates to customers service all centrally manged from one company.
The first one to accomplish this will become the face of Android and likely squeeze the rest out. Just my 2 cents anyway.

I wish they still had the GPE program. Don't know why they stopped.

Because carriers had no control over the phone at all and it was a us only phone. It also embarrassed Samsung a good bit imo because of the performance difference between the gpe and tw, as an owner I always felt like it was Samsungs red headed step child even though it was very well supported. At the time it was really quite wierd to not buy your Android phone from a carrier. Even still it is quite wierd especially in the us

Xtremeguard has the s7 edge screen protectors now. It's a wet install but probably the best bet. Thankfully the s7 edge is waterproof. ;)

Even better, GREAT88 knocks 88% off the price. Free shipping too. Just ordered.

There is; try using some tape to lift the ends.

Oh thanks. Does leaving it on affect picture quality?

I'm not sure; I believe it has a cutout in the center where the lens is.
