Earlier I had expected that Arya would face a difficult test and pass, thereby becoming a Faceless Man and learning how to shapeshift. But it appears that she failed the test and is on the outs with them. That would be disappointing to me since it makes this whole subplot a waste of potential for Arya. Unless its a trick of some sort and the real test is defeating The Waif, but that seems profoundly disloyal.

We'll have to see how it plays out.

If she had truly become faceless, then she would never have returned to Westeros, so I think we knew that couldn't happen. The question was just how close to the moment of decision she would get before realizing she WAS Arya stark, not just "a girl."

The subplot isn't wasted, though. She has learned a lot ... she is much better trained than she was, she learned a thing or two about life and death, and though it all she didn't lose her identity, no matter how tempting it was to just be "a girl" and not the girl whose father was killed, brother was betrayed, and home was ransacked.

I watched the three parts of the Game Of Thrones Docuseries on YouTube last night. Each one covers two episodes from the current season. Of all the GoT-related videos I've seen, this series shows the most about how the show is shot, especially from the special effects perspective. HBO is reportedly spending $10 per episode this season, and these videos help explain why. (Just search for Game Of Thrones Docuseries.)
I just watched these. Thanks for the heads up. Now, knowing the planning and detail going into these episodes, I'm amazed they can produce 10 or so hours of content in a year. What a massive production scale and $100M for the season doesn't really seem that much for the quality of production they're getting compared to blockbuster movie budgets that produce 2-3 hours.

You're welcome. The planning before each season's production begins is extensive because there are so many people and resources involved in multiple countries. They also shoot out of sequence—the show runners have said that they treat it like a 10 hour movie. And a lot of effort goes into scenes that are very brief; the one with the Mad King in Bran's vision is an example. So you're right—10 hours of content (actually a bit less) is amazing.

$10? HBO must be using slave labor. Kill the Masters! :p

Thanks for catching that. But I guess they could do it on the cheap if they used Maesters instead of Masters, or maybe some of Melisandre's conjuring. :)

Although I've complained that we are watching an outline of the story, I'm grateful that the show has been true to the characters' personalities and the general story framework. Another such conversion from print to media resulted in the destruction of the story, the tone, and the characters as compared to their original existence (True Blood) which I stopped watching a couple of seasons in.

I can't read so I'm none the wiser.

For GoT you are missing out. :p

Long ago I read a sci-fi series that was never finished. It really left me wanting some sort of closure, and so I'm not going to do that again. I also don't like years-long gaps between books. I tend to forget details over time and unfortunately that takes some of the magic out of the story when I don't realize there are links between what I'm reading now and what I read years ago.

Therefore, I look forward to reading GoT but I'm not going to start it until GRRM finishes it.

To me, it seems as if Jaqen H'ghar always knew Arya would not truly become part of the Faceless Men. Even so, he appears to like her.

Also, if the faceless men are supposed to be without emotional attachments, why is the Waif so hateful towards Arya? When the waif reported to Jaqen that Arya failed in her task to kill Lady Crane, the waif said "You promised me." Referring to the idea that Jaqen must have promised the waif that she could kill Arya if she failed. Doesn't this show that the waif has desire? Something a faceless man should not have. She also smirked as she was leaving.

My prediction for the Arya plot in the next couple of episodes:

Just as The Waif is about to kill Arya, Jaqen H'ghar will kill the waif.

Or Arya will kill the Waif and that in itself will be some sort of test or something.

(Didn't read the books so I have absolutely no idea about this part of Arya's story)

I think Arya will kill the Waif with Needle, and Jaqen will tell her it's time to leave, she can never be a faceless man.

Yes, but could Arya have become a Faceless Girl? It makes me wonder—how many nobody's have we seen in the House of Black and White besides Jaqen and the Waif? It reminds me of the episode on Star Trek TOS where Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are trying to control a bunch of gangsters, who don't believe that the Enterprise has over 400 crew members.

Seriously, whether Arya kills the Waif with Needle by herself or with Jaqen's help, I'll be happy to see her become the Arya we know and love again. I was beginning to get tired of this part of the story, as I was with the High Sparrow's conversations with his prisoners in King's Landing, at least until he turned the tables on Jaime in the last episode.

I just read an interesting theory that Arya and the Waif are actually the same person...

Looks like a lot of setup for the action to come next week. Also seeing the previews I saw that the Waif is going to be seen yet again. No doubt Arya will be adding her to the top of her hit list.

Last night's episode was one of my favorites. I particularly enjoyed:
  • The cold open with the Hound's return. I think we're going to see a lot more of him.
  • Olenna telling off Cersei. Cersei may seem calm lately, but she's a long, slow-burning fuse.
  • Lady Lyanna Mormont facing Sansa, Jon, and Davos. Bella Ramsey nailed it.
I still don't understand why Arya was walking around Braavos like she was on a holiday, unless she was trying to lure the Waif out of the shadows. Even then, you'd figure Arya would have been more careful. I have to watch the scene again, but it seemed that the Waif's disguised face looked just like Melisandre's old face a few weeks ago. I wonder if there's some connection.

The return of one of my favorite characters :) and the demise of another whom I wished had stayed longer. :(

If you're talking about Arya, she isn't dead. If they were going to kill her off, they would have showed it. They wouldn't have that final scene of her walking down the road. There was an interesting theory that Gendry was going to find her.

Plus, the next episode is called 'No One'. I think that will have some significance.
