The above quote was taken from the political / religious forum and was posted by edesignuk yesterday, a MR mod, who I would surmise is supposed to lead by example.

Perhaps you don't get sarcasm. It is also very unfair to take that quote out of the context of the thread it was posted in. So before anyone else "judges" me, see for yourself.

If anyone has taken it the wrong way I apologise, as it was definitely not the intent. The intent was to mock "Rev. Lou Sheldon" of the "Traditional Values Coalition (TVC)" for his ridiculous views on the "gay" lifestyle (whatever that is ).

This is not a witch hunt on anyone, there's no need to make it a witch hunt of me. I also like the way you seem to assume it was me than gave scem0 his time-out

OK edesignuk, while I'd read the entire thread, I perhaps had taken it either the wrong way or out of context, and no, I wasn't attributing Emerson's banning to you specifically. I'd assumed that it as a collective decision of the mods.

In my experience, when an issue is taken with one of our own, we do tend to band (banned?) together in mutual support. This comes from the years of repression the older gays remember all too well. If only we could all chill, lay back and live together. Ah well, dreams are free.

The fate of this thread is up to you, not us. As has been stated already, all we ask is that you keep it clean, use your common sense.

If you want to say that you went out last night, met someone, had a good time, then fine. If you (not you specifically, anyone) go in to the details of the night, that's going to far. This thread has had a lot of leeway given to it. Rather than being wastelanded already, offending posts have been edited - so that you can keep this going - but we're not prepared to keep on going like this. If people can't control themselves then that will have to be the end of it.

Arguing back and forth to the Mods is not a good way to try and keep this thread alive. They have been really loose about this thread and snapping at them for trying to regulate/Mod is not a good idea. Plus, it has been half a year.

The emoticons didn't transfer but were they there to camouflage the true emotion of the post? If so, then I shouldn't be surprised at the mod's kneejerk action in the banning of scemO.

I, along with many others, I would opine, consider it 'unfortunate' but that is now history. It makes me think of all the other repressed minorities, from the present gays, back through to the Jews, Blacks and other religious groups thru history and that is a very sad fact of life.

While Emerson's posts were overt, I agree. Given the depth of feelings that were being expressed at that time, I don't think unexpected. I had read into the postings that all of our expressions were to be moderated. And yes, a pertinent pun. I do not know if any direct contact was made between the mods and scemO, but in what I believed to be enlightened times, and on a site I'd considered progressive, I am most disappointed in his banning, albeit short term or more perminent.

Kevin- I don't think scem0 was banned for anything anyone else wouldn't be banned for. Let's calm down. I'm disappointed he's not here either, but he'll be back.

I'm just a breeder, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Smack me down if I am wrong. But it seems to me that homosexuals absolutely need to come out of the closet and live "in our faces" if they want to someday be equal. It's been my experience that the people who are most likely to support gay rights are those who actually know gay people. Policy and philosophical debate just cannot compare to personal experience in terms of its power to change people's minds. I think that to stay in the closet is actually counterproductive for the "movement." The sooner you can start coming up to people and just saying straight up (no pun intended) who your are, the sooner those people start to see that you're not that different from them. If you live in secrecy the stereotypes and preconceptions never get challenged.

Absolutely agree with you. I am not saying that we as Gays and Lesbians should hide who and what we are. I just think there times and places for certain conversations. I personally would not like to hear detailed explanations of your night at a bar with women on the dance floor around the water cooler at work.

The point I was trying to make was that my ex and I were a part of the community, because we did not hide who and what we were. But we did not feel the need to share our private sexual lives with our friends and neighbors. And that is why I think we were accepted by and large by our local community.

Well, I do think this thread has had a target on it since it began, first by members, then by Mods when it started getting a bit racey. I didn't mean that to sound accusatory, just stating what I believe is a fact.

It seems pretty clear this is mostly about Emerson's detailed recollections of his nights out in NYC. I can understand his enthusiasm to share with people who can relate: he's a young guy, recently out, living in NYC and experiencing a lot of things for the very first time. He's eager to share and has been encouraged to do so.

Having said that, I think Em was crossing the line and asking to be banned by reposting his story with the naughty bits left in (as white text on white background), after you and other Mods warned him to stop it. This is a Mac forum, and the rules are clear, and as guests here, we have to abide by those rules. I totally understand, and think that in general the Mods have been very patient with this thread and have been very fair.

Emerson did set up a blog recently, which I think is a more appropriate place to post his online journal. Hopefully he'll be allowed back, and I'm sure he'll play nice in the sandbox with the rest of us kids. If not, I voluteer to go find Emerson at Splash tonight and discipline him in person.

Maybe we should all take up Chip's offer for the .Mac group. I also have a .Mac account so i could also set it up. Give me a week or two till my broadband is up at home and i'll post a thread with details (unless you could do it sooner Chip?)

Then we could all say what we want without censorship.

What do you guys think? I really think we should do this. Then this thread can be what we want it to be.

Stop being melodramatic. The thread without any graphic material can go on forever, as far as I'm concerned. Time and time again, I've told straight people who reported the various gay threads that they have to deal with the fact that there are gay people in real life and there are gay people on MacRumors.

I will not stand for one group of people facing discrimination.

However, I'm demanding you to be upstanding citizens, too. If you are, no one can challenge that.

To be fair to scem0, I think that when some posts were allowed to go on with out a warning from the mods, some of us here got a bit more bold (myself included). But that is the great thing about the MR mods, they really go out of their way to avoid too heavy a hand with postings all over the forums. They seem to look at some questionable posts with caution, hoping that it will soon pass.

That's right, since I banned scem0 temporarily after he ignored my guidelines just after I posted them. (It didn't help with all the bloody arguing against what I was saying, either.) I really don't care whether he (or anyone else) respects the rules or not, as long as he abides by them.

As I have said before, I think you all as mods have shown great restraint in regards to this thread.

I am assuming that if scem0 had not posted his edited version of one of his posts with the questionable content "whited" out for "viewing", he might still be actively posting right now.

The other thing I have noticed about moderated forums. You don't argue once the mods have spoken. I for one thank you for the restraint in not shutting this thread down over the last day or so. You all have allowed "concerns" to be voiced.

Having been a mod back in the BBS days, a word of warning to my fellow GayWay participants. Don't make this thread one that the mods have to spend a lot of time on. Otherwise it will be killed.

Too many of us have spent a great deal of time and emotion in being a part of this thread. For those that wade through the many posts, there is a good deal of positive things that can be learned. It would be shame for it all to go to waste.

1) Objectifying yourself "as a gay" also paints a bad image.

2) This thread is under community, for discussion about anything, so therefore it has a right to exist on MR, and we are Mac users.
So if we want to talk about our latest adventers in the NYC Club Scene, or gripe aout how our boyfriend or Girlfriends' cat pee'd all over our new G5 before we got it out of the box, in this thread we can and will.

Hey Neil, Looks like you and I may be the only sober ones here. Emo'll be back before too long I guess.
