Nice app, just curious how long was the review process with apple on 1.0.4?

4 business days.

Performance

Matt,

Any word yet on the slow synching issue? I updated to 1.0.4 and it's still taking forever to synch to Google Reader. Thanks.

I'm already working on Gazette 2.0. Because of the way the Google Reader API works, I won't be able to speed up performance, while still allowing users to view articles by feed. It's either one or the other. I still have to decide.

Hi Matt,

Just discover your app and compare to other rrs reader available on the iPhone, it is the best to me, especially with the sync with the google one working fine.
But nevertheless, I have two questions to make:
1) Is it or will it be possible to also reader all the feeds that are regroup in a folder? ie: feeds x, y and z are in folder A. When in folder A, it is possible to read all the articles instead of going folder A, feed x, then back to folder A, feed y... ???
2) I have feeds to http://feeds.feedburner.com/DilbertDailyStrip , which brings up Dilbert strip (ie pictures). In some of your competition, the feed with picture will be downloaded but with your app, I only get a ? instead of the picture. Any solution there?

Thank you and keep on the good work!

1. This will be a feature in Gazette 2.0.
2. You need to be connected to the internet for pictures to be displayed, since they are not downloaded locally. Get Byline if you want pictures to be archived, however it's really slow.

BTW Does Gazette have Japanese localization? (I'm on the fence between Gazette & Byline, which does support Japanese)

Thanks Matt!

Matt-

Please do not remove the ability to read each feed individually. This is one of the main features that sets your app apart from the other google readers.

I agree with the previous post. If you choose to do so, make it an option that can go either way.

Barham - Gazette 2.0 will definitely supports feeds, even if performance is slightly slow. I am still analyzing ways on making it faster.

savemefromtears - You can view Japanese feeds in Gazette without any problems. The app itself is in English only.

I'm a new gazette user, and I seem to have the same issue... I have auto-sync at launch ON. When I opened gazette this morning, it displayed 600+ feeds. Then when it began syncing, that number went down below 200. Where did all those feeds go??

Shouldn't unread feeds remain downloaded (and available for offline viewing) and syncing only adds feeds to what is already there? Then older unread feeds can get deleted and replaced with newer ones ONLY when the limit has been met (mine is currently set to 1000). How can I get it to work this way??

Am I missing something?

Hi!

Gazette automatically removes feeds (locally) that haven't gotten any new articles in over 12 hours. They will automatically reappear as soon as new, unread articles are available. This improves performance and reduces clutter of the interface.

Hi!

Articles that are marked as read and are older than 12 hours will be removed from Gazette. Feeds are only removed if you removed them from Google Reader, or if they haven't gotten any new articles in the past 12 hours. Unread articles should be available for offline viewing at any time.

If you send me an OPML file of your subscriptions I can further investigate your issue.

Wow, I just noticed that Gazette allows you to escape to Safari from any post! Great addition... Or I'm an idiot for not noticing in the first place.

That was there all along but I tweaked it for better usability.

Just an update on the progress of Gazette 2.0:

It's coming along really nicely and should be out in around mid-January.

Some notable changes:

- New UI
- Support for syncing huge amounts of articles
- Rewritten networking engine
- Ability to email articles without exiting the app
- Ability to mark an entire folder as 'read'
- Over 100% faster syncing
- 50% lesser memory usage

Mid-July???!!! That's over 6 months away. Don't you mean mid-Jan???

I hope it's January, still love this app. It remains one of the few that I have paid for.

Just an update on the progress of Gazette 2.0:
- Over 100% faster syncing

This is the best part about the 2.0 update. The current version is completely unusable for me with the number of feeds I track (though NetNewsWire has absolutely no problems with the same number of subscriptions in comparison to Gazette). Please hurry.

Hi just got Gazette and am loving it so far, great little app.

I came over from Byline as it was a bit clunky and I started to really hate that wood look lol.

Got one minor problem though - my feeds don't seem to be taking their name from my Google feed names, for example my appshopper.com feed....

On my Google Reader account I renamed it to App Store

But on Gazette it appears as AppShopper.com: New Apps, Version Changes and Price Changes

Bit of a pain as I've got a few feeds like that and it looks a bit ugly.

Is it something I'm doing wrong or a limitation of Gazette?

2Nightly...I also just dropped Byline to come back to Gazette. I was tired of having to scroll all the way to the bottom to mark all read if I wanted to just empty my folders. The wood look was OK but being able to change skins would be nice. I wish more apps had this ability. After reading your post I tried renaming some of my feeds and tried changing some of the settings in Gazette and you are correct. It shows the original feed title and does not adjust it per user specs in google. This can be inconvienant for long titles when an abbreviation is just fine. Either this option is not available or we are both missing something.

Anyway, I am so glad I am back to using Gazette, it is so much faster and easier to use, and more organized then Byline.

im very interested in this app, i dunno if i should get it!

Maybe on 2.0

Also, is there any way a google calendar app can be made?

If you use Google as much as I think you do (like me) then I currently use my Google calender and then have installed Google Calender Sync
This then syncs with my Outlook 2003 which syncs to my iPhone.
Like you, I would also love a Google calender App or have Apple get off its RearEnd and allow it in iTunes. I mean you can already sync your contacts straight to Google, Why not your bookmarks and calenders? As normal, Apple has half-built the iPhone and are running around like chickens trying to fix it.

Google is FREE and does everything the MobileMe can do which you pay for.

Anyway...try the Google Sync, I use and recommend the Gazette reader because of my Google reader and it far surpass's byline. Use your Google Contacts and of course I have the iPhone set up to recieve my Google Mail
Picaso and Google Docs is next to get working on my iPhone.

i had that calendar system set up, BUT!!!!

the problem is in the calendar app on iphone, you can certainly view the calendar listings, but you cant edit them.

Sure you can, I do it everyday with entering my homework into my class already scheduled and it syncs back to google calender.

Check to ensure that you have 2-way selected under sync options fo Google Sync. Under Info tab in iTunes I have selected "Outlook" (only option) and Sync all Calenders. With this setup, I use only my iPhone and my Google Calender. Outlook is only the tunnel and is never even opened.

Let me know if you still have problems and we will try to figure it out. Are you PC or Mac user?
