Ah, I just have a conflict that’s come up and may not be able to make it by 4. I’m trading in my current 13 Pro though so I guess there won’t be any waiting to open it once I go! Unless I want to be incommunicado for a bit 😝
Hmmm I was just thinking about this. Something came up for my boyfriend during our scheduled time. When he ordered, we set up a trade-in for him. I'm thinking I can still just pick it up (I'm the official pick-up person on the order) for him and say yes he'll be back later to turn in the old phone. I'm pretty sure you can as long as it's in the 14-day window.

If anybody knows if I have this wrong, please let me know.

If that does work, you could possibly pick up your phone, take it home to set up, and bring back your old phone later.

I called an Apple support rep yesterday and he claimed that I can go pick it up whenever as long as the order said "Ready for Pickup." I verified again that as long as my order is ready for pick up, I can go get it even if it is well before my window and he said "yes." I don't think I'll try it because I have my doubts but it is interesting he said that.

Has anyone ever done the thing where you wait in line overnight for a launch? I don’t think it happens much now, if at all, due to the pre-order system. I did do it once— it was 2013, the first year T-Mobile was an option at launch. I was within the first 10 or so people in line I think… and when Apple employees started kinda gathering ’orders’ of what people in line wanted, I learned they didn’t even have a single one available of the color / capacity of iPhone 5S I wanted 😂 Rough times being on T-Mobile back then, haha. (I was looking for a gold iPhone 5S— may have been the first time Gold was an option. It was the “Deep Purple” of that year ;) I can’t believe they didn’t have a single gold allotted for T-Mobile).

This year I didn’t even wake up early for pre-order, I had no alarm set— when I did wake up, I navigated to the store and then checked the forums and hemmed and hawed until someone assured me in-store trade-in wouldn’t be an issue if I did in-store pickup (wasn’t a sure thing last year with covid policies and such, seems like). Placed my order and I guess by not going Pro Max and not going Deep Purple, I was still able to get a day-of pickup time a couple hours after preorders started :)
Wow, what a story arc!

So did you finally get your gold 5S or did you pick something else?

This year sounded so chill for you.

I've already traded in a phone and a watch to Apple in the past month, so at least one Apple Store is letting people in to trade. 👌🏻

Well I was excited for in-store pickup but somehow my phone got changed to shipping. This is even after getting the email stating in store pickup. Thankfully I was able to get UPS to change it to pick up at my local UPS shipping facility.

I will pick up my 14 PM at 12:45pm, perfect to have lunch before. Store pickup feels more exciting and special to me! :)

UPS lost my last iPhone which was super annoying...waited several days for nothing.
Oh man, all it takes is one bad experience, right.

But it is nice to not only have another option, but a fun one. I actually enjoy the in-store pickup. It's fun to physically be around others who are excited. Granted I don't want to walk through a gauntlet of applauding Apple employees, but the crowded store and people trading excitement in line is fun for a bit. Reminds me of standing in line for concert tickets.

Enjoy your launch lunch!

Pick up option was never available from day 1. I could only get it mailed.
Interesting. And your order still says 'check back on Sept 16th'???

Has it been like that in the past? Are you not near an Apple Store?

Let's cross our fingers you check back Friday and they 'surprise it's coming today!'

Pick up set for 8:15am tomorrow for my 14 Pro Deep Purple 1TB. Going to try and pick up a watch as well since I was unable to order for in-store pick up.
Love it. Go big or go home for you. :)

I've done that. Gone in for a phone and walked out with a phone and two watches. I remember saying to the Apple employee, "This is crazy, right?'

So what watch are you hoping to get?

Good that you have an early pick-up time so you'll be there while they (hopefully) have more watch stock.

Each Apple Store may do their own thing. But being that there will have long lines and depending on how busy it is they will likely tell you to come back at your time slot.

On regular days other than launch week, you can go at anytime you want to pick it up. Ive done that a few times in the past where i choose 5 pm but i went on lunch time to pick it up.

Super excited indeed! Picking up my Gold iPhone 14 Pro Max tomorrow at the Apple Store within a window of 8:15 - 8:30 am.
I am glad I chose this method instead of having it shipped. I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of incessantly tracking my package to see where it is or if its been delayed; and then after all of that, making sure it doesn’t get delivered to the wrong home or stolen from your door.
This.

I've done this.

Think my experiences were that I ordered two things that had different windows, and they let me grab both early.

Another time I showed up and said I got an order is ready for pickup. I said it with a smile and without mentioning the time, and they just put me in the pickup line; once I got to the front of it, they said 'you're early', I showed them the 'ready for pickup' and they said 'okay' and ushered me in.

So if you're up for it or it works for you, try a little early? If you don't want the hassle, maybe just enjoy knowing it's there waiting for you.

Whoa. Well-handled. Like dribbling around defensemen and scoring!

If you mean trade in at Apple while you're picking up your new phone, yes. Unless they've changed the policy, I've done it many times.
Do they do carrier trade-ins? Or do you need to do that at your carrier store/mail in?

Yeah I would love to try. I think I would be too early haha. My "assigned" time is Sat at 5pm but I leave for the weekend tomorrow around noon so no way I get them to give it to me over 24hrs before my slot.

Hmmm, no clue. Since Apple has recently started including 'carrier trade-ins' in their ordering process, maybe? Yours is a good question.

The Apple Store in Louisville makes you show the time on your pickup email or wallet on your phone. But I have learned that with a smile and a good excuse, they will still let you pickup early. They put me in the line behind the current group of people waiting just like I was in the next time slot. When I got in the store, the Apple employee had to ask their supervisor if it was okay who then went back and pulled it himself. I guess they have them lined up by time in the back, no clue.

I say if you have the chance, go--tell them just what you said here. If they have it, they'll probably give it to you. Sometimes it's worth trying, even if it doesn't work out. Something fun like a phone before leaving town sounds like a fun thing worth trying.

Yeah I might try first thing in the morning, maybe around 8/8:15 with the first pickup slots. I tried to get ahold of the actual store but even the local number I found directs to their main customer service.
One thing going for me is I don't think it's usually a very busy store.

Yes, the not-busy store could be good.

Yeah I ended up buying a Space Gray... and returning it. Ordered online and just waited for the gold to show up a number of weeks later. I could have ordered it at midnight while in line and gotten it faster if I'd known. The line party was still fun though! It's like a local, in person version of these ordering threads ;)

I did end up trading in in-store last year-- but that was in November, quite some time after launch. Took a while to snag the right device for in-store pickup! (In addition to trying to decide if I wanted to abandon the Pro Max club :p) (iUP can really mess up your upgrade timing with those years that Apple launches phones later in the year due to whatever reason-- unless you want to make extra payments. Finally ditched iUP last year when I got the 13 Pro).

I think the trick will be how they handle the credit for the trade-in. If you pick up the phone without trading in, I imagine you / he'll end up paying full price. Will they do something to credit the trade-in towards that phone later? Or will the only option be the usual Apple Gift Card? Honestly I don't know but now I'm super curious to see how it plays out. Also I wonder if they can set up a mail-in trade in with that 14 day window you mentioned. Or maybe they can treat in-store trade in the same way where that $$ doesn't get credited until the trade-in is complete. Never considered this!

That's cool. You got a Space Gray launch and finally got the Gold that you really wanted. :)

And yeah, these threads are the new queues--except way easier to duck out, get some food, go to the bathroom, live a bit of life, and come back. Kinda nice to have had the line experience though. :)

Yup, I dumped the IUP a couple years ago and my boyfriend finally did this year--for the very reasons you have.

This is all the stuff I was wondering, too.

My current thought: maybe they take off the trade-in for the moment, but if/when I bring back the 13P, they'll just credit my purchase?

I picked the first slot at 8am and regret it… that was quite unnecessary but it’s my favorite holiday so I guess I’ll be up early
Does anyone know if you can pick up later if you can’t make it to the early reservation? I might be working out of town that guy and won’t be back until the afternoon.
