Wonder what they could do with their own custom silicone? Maybe lower prices since they wouldn't have to pay licenses to Qualcomm? Nor need to play by their rules or restrictions?

Tailor their custom chips for better AI performance?

Same reason why Apple performance is so good...because they have custom chipsets made specifically to work with their hardware and OS. Things can be customized and tailored to be more efficient.

Maybe that would be a great time release their first Pixel with Fuchsia? Hmmmm hardware designed just for the new mobile OS...might be a very good thing....

Maybe, but seems like that would be a very risky move to release a 1.0 version OS with a 1.0 version chipset? Thats asking for a lot to go wrong for a company that has a history of struggling with quality control.

Reports today say that Google are developing their own chipset for the 2021 Pixel. They are clearly going for the Apple model. Knowing Google's track record with hardware, especially early on, that could be a real problem for the first few years.
I'll believe when I see it, hasn't that rumor been floating around for years?

And not sure if that will be a good thing, I wonder if that will affect Android's performance with snapdragon chipsets if Google designs it with their chipset in mind, might make updates take longer for other OEMs.

Those with the 4XL, what storage size do you have and if you have 64gb, is it a struggle? Fingers crossed they see sense this year an offer 128gb minimum.

I really hope they (or anyone, really) can start competing with Qualcomm in this arena so that we are just subject to one chipset maker here in the US for Android.

I always bounce between Android and iOS (typically prefer Android). I did have the 11 Pro for a bit and that thing was stellar but I got a Pixel 4 XL half off through T-Mobile a few months ago and love it! I had it briefly when it launched and didn't like it then but I think they've improved it from then with software updates. While I think the gestures are a bit more smooth and refined on the iPhone, I do like them now on the Pixel 4 XL... plus having a FaceID-like system is really nice. I don't miss having a finger print sensor.

Agree with so much of this, save for the critique of the Pixel 4 XL as mine isn’t being delivered until tomorrow. I find I prefer FaceID so that implementation on the Pixel was one of the key factors swaying me in that direction (vs. OnePlus), well, that and the $300 off. ?

I personally use 1Password but did a test drive of LastPass last year and found the two at parity with each other. I stuck with 1Password since I had my vault already established and my employer pays for it. When anyone asks for a recommendation for a password management app, LastPass and 1Password are my two recommendations.

Its funny, Google just gives so many reasons to not buy Pixels at launch. They offer bad trade-in and pre-order incentives. They release with software issues, usually causing bad battery life. And there are always problems, but its otherwise a very good phone with a top tier camera.

Fast forward a couple months to Black Friday...you still have a very good phone. Only now, its $200 cheaper, has had a few months of software updates to fix battery and other issues. Now you have a great device.

There are so many ways they could improve their sales numbers but they are a software company and for whatever reason they just dont care.

I really liked the Pixel 4 XL and I would have kept it if the battery wasnt so bad.

Here's how I would approach it, at least in my shoes. I would wait for the Google chipset to debut and go through its first year. The 2nd generation would be the earliest I would touch one, so in other words, likely a Pixel 6. Nobody knows how it would look, so until then, it's just all speculation on my part.

I am open to new experiences, but as of now, nothing has convinced me to give the Apple ecosystem yet. CarPlay and the Apple Watch keep me in the ecosystem now.

Pixel 6 would be the first generation of the chipset. Their chipset wont be ready until 2021 at the earliest.

Ok, then in this case, Pixel 7 would be the first one I would look at buying because I believe in a generation skip with their chipset. It will need time to clean out any sort of first-gen issues.

Can't judge something that's not even been made. They could make a very capable chip first time round.

Of course they could. But all you can go off of before then is their track record. And their track record with hardware is not very good.
I just think it's a little strange to announce you'll skip something before it's been made. Waiting for initial reviews would make more sense.

No disrespect to Google, but I would do the same thing if it were a brand new car too. I would not buy a Hummer EV in its first generation. (For the record, I think it was cancelled). There are a few things I can go first gen with, like an Xbox or something you don't use daily, but a phone is tougher. Rather not take chances on that type of stuff.

But then again, "tried and true" could end up being a Note 7. The safest approach is to avoid buying the first crop of any new product (Xbox, Phone, laptop, etc).

Initial reviews will only paint a little of the picture. Hardware failures, throttling issues, heat issues, weardown issues, etc won't happen right away. It'll take some time for them to show up. I'm not staying I won't get one the first year, I'm saying that Google's dicey hardware track record should make people hesitant to be a year one adopter.

Looks like it's due in tomorrow for me! Will see if the snow has anything to say about that however... o_O

Probably won't get too far into it until a bit later due to flip flopping schedule and lack of sleep. Maybe... I do plan on unlocking the bootloader and rooting. Naturally ?

Supposed to be on truck for delivery by end of day today, but I'm starting to wonder

Oh well I'm half asleep anyway ?

Edit:

I know it took me long enough to aquire this thing! Actually a bit more excited about it than the 3 XL. Mostly the price kept me from the insta buy. The camera tricks it offers kind of helped me decide. Really curious about the astrophotography mode since I've been trying to get back into that hobby.

Really hope this puppy don't let me down. ?

Got a staycation coming up, so plan is to unlock bootloader and root then set up and probably migrate my fi line to it. Still plan on keeping my 2 on wifi. It's still pretty solid ?

I’m itching to get back to a Pixel but also keen to keep the price low. I’ve seen a few grade A Pixel 3a XLs on eBay for around £270. I am also thinking that the Pixel 4a at £400 would be damn good.

Getting the initial set up taking care of. Nice slab so far! Had to disable the gesture navigation, just ugh *shudders* got a few OTAs to take then main set up. Kinda curious about the camera ;)

Digital well-being turned off... Force 90hz on, rooted I think.

My case is going to be a while though.

I don't get why some are so upset with the gestures, they're pretty damn good. Even the early form of Android gestures were better than buttons.

Don't recall being or saying I was upset or mentioning the gestures are bad... I just don't like them. I find them awkward personally. I'm sure they are good and other people enjoy them. Buttons are just my personal preferences ?
