I know I shouldn't panic before the thing is even out yet but if the 4 XL starts at $999 for 90hz, 855 (not 855+), smaller battery for a phone this size, and 64gb, then I'm probably out. Maybe I'll check in for a deal later but it's looking to be completely lacking in some areas at that price point. Maybe they are just trying to price like Apple even though they don't get 5% of the orders iPhones get (no clue here but it's probably close).

Then again if it starts the same price as last year and has some freebie throw in at launch then I'm in. :)

Can the Soli feature be turned off? I can't imagine wanting to have it on all the time. Maybe when I am cooking or gardening. Also I'm a bit wary of the safety of that technology. I am trying to find information about that and find it conflated with many scary articles about mmwave technology in 5G, which there is much fearmongering about. Which may or may not be legitimate. Will we really know so early, anyway? I could be dead of old age before the true health effects become apparent in our children.

At any rate I want the option to not activate it by accident. I would imagine it is in there, but was wondering has anyone seen anything about that in print or video?

What's with Google's fetish on nonuniform displays
What do you mean? You mean like it looks blue on top and pink on bottom as you move the phone? Or are you referring to the forehead being so big? Or something else?

My number concern is battery life on the 4 XL?

My wife has the Pixel 2 XL, which gets her pretty good battery life. I have the 3 XL, and battery life is mediocre at best.

Now the Pixel 4 XL will have a 90hz display, but only a 3,700mAh battery 😭

Google should at least go the Samsung route of 4,000mAh to 4,300mAh size batteries. Or look at Apple, they increased the Max battery from like 3,050mAh to like 3,900mAh in the Pro, which is 25% to 30% and it makes a massive difference, along with more efficient hardware too.

Based on that, from the Pixel 3 XL's 3,450mAh battery, then the Pixel 4 XL should come with like a 4,400mAh size battery, which would be amazing and really do the job like the 11 Pro Max.

nailed it....those are my biggest concerns as well. I loved the overall user experience on my Pixel 3 XL. But how much battery was left was always a concern.

Seriously, battery life is the number 1 concern? Such simple issue to fix. Of course everyone likes really long battery life but it also degrades the battery to constantly drain it increasing cycle count. You are much better off topping it off often with a charger whether it be a case, wall outlet, separate battery charger, etc. This applies to all lithium ion batteries.

Not to mention that if you are burning through a battery in half a day you probably have some other issues to address. Like serious cell phone addiction. Read a book or go do something productive without being on your phone 24/7. Blows my mind how some of you have like 5 phones comparing the most moronic stuff. I dont know if it's a constant search for attention and approval disguised as enthusiasm. It's definitely an addiction either way. Really is sad how communication skills and the ability to concentrate is being eradicated because of this addiction to constant trivial information.

Here is a challenge for you all. Next time you go out with friends or family trying leaving your phone at home or in the car. Force yourself to take a break and concentrate on real meaningful interaction.

Yeah, I feel the same way in regards to battery life. It’s such a non-issue for me given the ubiquity of wall outlets and the existence of portable battery chargers. I’d rather have a lighter phone with a smaller battery than a heavy phone with a larger battery.

I didn’t know people owned multiple phones just for fun until I started posting here. I didn’t know that was a thing. I only own one phone and I’m just here to decided between an iPhone and an Android for my next phone. I don’t have the time or the money to own more than one phone!

How nice of you to jump down from your high horse to tell everyone on here how to spend their time. Here’s a question...isn’t there something more important or meaningful you could’ve been doing during the time you spent on a phone forum telling people how to live their lives?

Every year we get one of these posts. Those of us you’re mocking know each other and what we are doing and why as we’ve chatted about it over the years to satisfy each other’s polite curiosity. We have got nothing to prove or explain to you. Actually people who mock other people tend to be the most insecure and maladjusted people. Kindness takes less effort and reaps greater rewards.

And I would actually question a lifestyle in which a person is surrounded by electrical outlets all the time and can’t extend the effort to envision how other people might live a different lifestyle. I live out semi rural on the fringe of cell service. When I’m outside away from WiFi that eats through my battery pretty fast. I don’t fancy carrying around a clunky case because I favor other styles of cases.

It’s such an odd comment to make from someone who has almost 2,000 posts on this forum. I didn’t know that people owned multiple phones for fun before posting here, but I don’t get the big deal. We all have our obsessions.

I am very interested in seeing what Google unveils on Tuesday, even though I am sure it has all been leaked already. Soli looks neat but that's about it. I don't see myself using it very much and it seems more like a gimmick than a real feature. The small battery on the regular 4 looks concerning. Google better have some tricks up their sleeves if they want to compete with the new iPhones at the same price point. Being Google though, I am sure they won't. They never have extra goodies to surprise people with.

The biggest thing making me hesitant to try one is that it won't have an ultra wide lens. While I realize it is a gimmick for most users, I actually would use it a lot. I take a lot of pictures in small tight spaces for work and having an ultra wide lens would make it so much easier and allow me to get better photos.

The recent events in HK and Apple's stance regarding it has definitely made me lose some respect for them as a company, but there is not much I can do and when I really think about it pretty much all American companies would, and are, doing the same. They all care about money more than anything else, despite all their attempts to virtue signal and make the masses believe they all care about humanitarian things over the years. And this applies to all corporations, not just Apple. Never be fooled. Corporations care about the bottom line, not you. It is just disappointing with Apple because a lot of us believed they really did care and wanted to do the right things. It was part of the reason we believe them when they say they care about privacy and might even be a reason why we choose to pay more for their products. It turns out they are just as **** as every other tech company so I guess the reality is just buy whatever is the best bang for the buck and go back to assuming anything you do or use online has zero privacy.

Yeah actually I didn’t own multiple phones until the Note 7 came out. We even got a free phone when we opened our second lines. I just had to satisfy a long-standing curiosity about Android and I’m glad I did. It’s been an absolute blast. I know you’re a student and on a budget so it’s not easy to splurge on multiple phones just to satisfy a gadget obsession. I couldn’t do this even through most of my early 40’s. And frankly when you’re younger of course you’re going to have all sorts of fun other things to spend money on. That’s the way it should be. At my age with my responsibilities I’m exactly where I need to be doing what I enjoy at my age. It’s all good!

@Frankied22 Yes! I do love the ultra wide angle lens. I use it all the time. It’s fantastic for getting everyone in the photo in tight spaces at restaurants. And I’m still eager to get to the museums and get the shots I couldn’t take before. With my iPhone at the Air and Space museum I was trying to get my cousin’s kids and mine all together in front of one of the exhibits and there was no space for me to back up. I had to take two photos. Though I don’t know why I didn’t think to do a panorama. It just didn’t occur to me to try. And that’s hard to do with kids anyway. They won’t stand still enough.

@noobinator In the last couple of months I’ve gotten offers of incredible discounts for the 3XL, which of course I already own. My 3XL warranty actually isn’t up until late winter. January, I think. That’s probably when I’ll bite. There will be holiday sales, I’d imagine. I may wait even later. With Pixels I am so wary of pre orders. I want to see all the reviews and find out all the issues.

Tech is fascinating. I feel like I’m missing out on so much by staying with Apple. I totally understand why people would own both an iPhone and an Android.

Why I would get this device:
No notchzilla
90hz screen
Vanilla (with sprinkles aka Google bloat!) Android
Fresh device
New tech (the radar, though might be bloat)
Fresh battery

Why I wouldn't get this device:
How is all the above going to make my posting here or running the basic apps I use any different? How is another grand out of my pocket going to make my user experience any better? 😫

But I like new toys 😜

Great points!
I would add the below

Pros
New face unlock tech from Google
Better camera with dual lens and zoom
90hz display
Soli Radar
updated Google Assistant

Cons
The basic hardware is nothing write home about and is getting a bit stale
Battery should be bigger... I mean c'mon Google it should be 4000 mAh
Price is getting out of control

It’s not ok anymore to just have ok battery life on a flagship. With phones like the pro max and note 10 + setting a new standard for excellent battery life, the bar has been raised. Google needs to step up and match It.

Based on current trends, I thought the definition of flagship devices was to remove or cut features, conform more towards form over function and charge more?! 😒

I need to know that I can stream porn on my phone all day when I'm slacking off work in the toilet. How dare you suggest battery life is a non issue and I should go read a book instead.

And why should I engage in real, meaningful interactions, when I can be begging for likes on Instagram for posting pics of my dinner?

It's true though, I don't really have any interest in tech of any kind. I just pretend I do so I can come on here and beg for attention from people who for all they know, I'm a 100 year old Chinese guy with a limp.

He might have been having a particularly bad day and just got irritated by the conversation here. I’ve been very irritable myself the last few days adjusting to the change of seasons.

And I can see how those of us who already talk about owning two or more phones getting all angsty about a third phone over battery capacity might rub some people the wrong way. But jeez, it is a forum about phones and other smart devices. What else am I going to be talking about here? I suppose I could talk about gardening.😆 Would you all like to hear of my struggles with managing thistles without the use of herbicide?🤪😴

Now getting back to the topic we are here for, I really do wonder how those batteries are going to adequately serve Soli, the high refresh rate, and AOD and other special features they tend to bake in.
