I'm a huge Nexus / Pixel fan, I have the Pixel 3 XL, my Wife the Pixel 2 XL. But honestly this Pixel 4 release is not getting me crazy hot. I have the 4 XL in the cart, and just pausing on actually clicking buy,. My only beef with my 3 XL is mediocre battery life. The 90hhz display and FaceID would be cool on the Pixel 4, but that's about it.

What about the Assistant built into the hardware itself, and not needing to go online, same with the new voice to text, it's all done on the phone hardware on the Pixel 4. is that something the older Pixel phones will get too, or is it an exclusive to the Pixel 4 line only?

I am very jealous of the battery life on the new iPhone 11 Pro Max, upset that Google didn't even try to compete in that department.

It will be interesting to see the battery life drain tests in the coming weeks. The OnePlus 7 Pro did not fair well even with a 4000mAh battery due to its 90Hz display. It barely beat out the iPhone XS Max in one test with its 3174mAh battery.

Well, overall I am pretty underwhelmed.
However, I did say the exact same thing last year about the Pixel 3, and that ended up being a really fantastic device. Aside from the QC issues.

But there are just some really stupid decisions going on here. That small battery, the photo storage, the removal of the wide front facing camera, the lack of wide back camera, the orange only being available in the 64gb version, and the strange difference in materials with 2 being matte backed and one being glossy.

It's just all weird, and all a bit HTC.

The black device just looks like a prototype to me. Why they got rid of the two tone back is absolutely beyond me.

If OnePlus camera was anywhere close to the Pixel quality, it would be no contest IMO. I love Oxygen OS and what Oneplus does with features vs price, but the camera, even on the 7 Pro, is still lacking by quite a bit IMO. Yes, you can install Gcam but still doesn't produce the results of the Pixel camera... come on OnePlus, get that camera up to snuff!

Agreed. If the OP7 had the pixel camera sensor in it, at it's price, I think Google would have a problem. Heck, they already have one in the iPhone 11, don't that start at the same pixel price? The only thing keeping some people from jumping ship is their distaste for iOS, and that's partly on what Google is presumably banking on.

I’m surprised how poor trade in deals are with Google. You would think they want to push to at least keep current Pixel users.
Samsung was giving $650 plus $200 for S10 and Note 10 promo if you traded in Pixel 3...
Yeah $295 for my 128 GB Pixel 3XL and $100 store credit for accessories. Meh. I’ll wait and see what comes down the road. I am too busy to really put it through its paces until late winter anyway.

ZDNet had a scathing commentary on how underwhelming this phone was and late to the game on many aspects. To that I could only think “Yes, but...”

I still think the true coolness factor is where @jamezr said it is: a powerful truly useful assistant that is deeply integrated into the OS with no cruft getting in the way and much now taking place on the phone itself. Plus a new cool way to access it. Soli is going to be a gimmick for some people but others of us may find this new way of interacting with the phone very helpful.

I just wish the specs were more well rounded. It’s like they emphasized their signature features and kind of forgot others for yet another year running.

There are aspects of their computational photography that look interesting this year. I like the addition of some manual control over the camera so you can dial back the hdr and get shadows when you actually want them.

I can’t wait to see if they do solve that problem of getting a proper photo of the moon over a nighttime cityscape.

It's too soon for people to visualize the applications for Motion Sense but off the top of my head it'll allow safer legal operation of phone while driving for states that allow hands-free operation, using phone as reference for DIY car maintenance/repairs without getting oil on it, aid for accessibility impairments, etc.

Glad they upped the RAM in the new Pixels, disappointed they still only go up to 128GB.

Design is great, 90Hz screen is more than welcomed, super clean overall look and not trying to be what it’s not.

I feel like Google did a good job overall here, Pixel fans should be happy.

I agree. Looks like a solid upgrade to me. It doesn’t blow every other phone out of the water (no phone does) but it brings some interesting features to the table. I like the ultra-quick face unlock and soli (weird name). I wouldn’t trade 90hz for battery life personally but not sure yet if that is a factor. Clean design without doing anything crazy. Love the simplicity.

I like this guys videos, this really shows the phones in great detail, but wow the forehead top bezel really looks large, and makes the Pixel 4 look dated.

Isn't the rumor for the 2020 iPhone's, that are due to release in September, to get rid of the notch, and have all the sensors buried under the glass, and a little bit in the thin tiny bezel. That the iPhone 12 will have a thin equal sized bezel on all 4 sides, being perfectly symmetrical and like all display, zero notches, no punch holes, no tear drop, etc...

Saying that, I feel the Pixel 4 will not age well.

Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL hands-on: this time, it’s not about the camera

Face Unlock
I’ll admit, it was a little jarring. Every phone I’ve ever used had some sort of secondary action between picking up the phone and getting into it: a tap on a fingerprint sensor or a swipe on the screen. With the Pixel 4, it’s like there isn’t a lock screen at all because you almost never get a chance to see it.

I plan to wait and buy it at Best Buy at the end of the month. Hopefully by then we'll know if there are any issues that would be worth holding off for. It seems like every year there are some annoying issues at launch that require a software patch.

Well, that plan went out the window! 😂 I pre-ordered from Amazon.

The actual price from Amazon is $699, with a $100 gift card added to the order, making it $799. The taxed amount was $699, though.

Interested to see what people here think when they start getting devices.

The batteries are apparently pretty small and they stopped doing the unlimited photo storage thing. Yikes.

Apparently the FaceID is almost too good for its own good. Like, if you use it, it will immediately skip the lock screen. Reminds me of iPhone 7's TouchID.

I’m patient. There will be an even bigger promo next month. The pixel 3/xl was discounted heavily one month after its release.

It’s a tough high end cell phone market. At least in USA. Huge discounts for android phones on post paid carriers with $300-350 gift card promos often.

I suspect I can grab a pixel 4 ($799) for the equivalent of $450-500 (when gift cards are factored in ) by mid November

i got my 3xl for 50% off sale in April 2019. But they had the travel credit deal for like $800 worth of gift cards last November

Watching some unboxings, the Google 'side orders' they've given to tech reviewers along with the pizzas are neat, and the case that they bundle in there is really nice. It's just a clear bendy case but has the google colours on the back (seen in the vid below, from 2:18).

What annoys me, is that Google just give these goodies to Tech reviewers so they can get clicks on their unboxing vids, but I'd happily buy that case if it were available. Instead, we get their crappy fabric cases (which I really dislike).

These big companies never think of the consumer. We're the ones actually putting our hand in our pockets to fork out for these devices!

Cue in all the fans making excuses for the tiny battery (for Android standard), lack of fingerprint sensor, and lack of ultra wide camera, with an “aging” SD855.
