I am writing this from an area where I barely get enough cell reception to do basic things. At least that is on my s23 ultra.

On my Pixel 8 Pro I get better reception and I can actually use my phone. The P8P also handles the heat so much better than the P7P. On cell using data I don't notice a huge battery drain or heat. Nice improvement.

I don't know if any of you follow the DX mark site? They rated the Pixel 8 Pro the best smartphone screen of any phone so far this year. #1. We got #4 on the camera.

Not bad.

We go again.
Picked up earlier. Bargain! The film was still on the screen, the guy just wanted rid of it for a quick cash grab I think!
He even gave me proof of purchase 😯.

The time it takes to set an Android device up is paiiiiinful. Guess that’ll teach me.

That is just Google. Samsung has Smart Switch. I have a completely encrypted backup on a usb drive I can restore to a new device and have everything including my settings and wallpaper all come over to the new device.

Ah gotcha! It's hardly surprising, actually. As it was s similarly painful experience with the Watch 2!

I thought setting up my P8 was easy. Even copied my setup forn Nova and Microsoft launchers. Copied my texts as well.
Seems setup as new would be a PITA. Don't see an advantage to doing that.

Im with you. Android as a whole in my experience is just garbage at backing up and restoring. Even Smart Switch is trash the few times I tried using it.

I still think the old-school Apple way was the best; back-up and restore from iTunes was always flawless for me. Don't @ me lol.

iCloud backup works best for me …identical phones and set up’s and just need a few passwords on some apps

Yeah it's not the best.
I remember when I got my original 8 Pro and I did a transfer from my iPhone 14 and it was painful. It took over an hour and a half to transfer all my data and it didn't even work properly.

Today I just did restore from cloud backup and that was just as bad. Much quicker, but none of my apps were downloaded and all got stuck 'pending'. I had to turn the phone on and off and clear the cache / storage of the play store app twice to get it to download and then again to update apps. Really poor.

I've only really just got the 8 Pro back up and running the same way as I had it before.
I have just signed back up to YT Premium though. What a treat. I can't believe I lasted as long as I did (just under 2 months) without premium. Those adverts man. Awful.

Trying YT Music now too. Seeing how I get on with it as I'll keep my Apple Music around for my iPhone and iPad.

Probably Apples fault. They don't play well with others.

Well I caved, decided to try an open box "excellent" P8 Pro 128 from Best Buy for $765, delivers tomorrow. If it has hardware or cosmetic issues I'll just return it and wait for black Friday. Doubt the unlocked models will get more than a $300 discount anyway in a couple weeks, so just went with this. I'm hoping 128gb is enough, I store all photos / videos in the cloud and am using 68gb of space on my iPhone currently. I get random spam calls and fax calls daily that I'm sure will be stopped by the Pixel call and spam screener. I also pay the $99 for Apple Dev account so that I can sideload Kodi and uYou+ which ends up being better than using YT+. They work flawlessly on iPhone, but I can't even cast to my Apple TV from my iPhone, which is ridiculous. I can't even sideload without paying for an additional Dev account for the ATV I don't think. I am going through my yearly Apple frustration at the moment, lol. Always takes place between Pixel and Samsung launches.

I tried magic eraser on the Google photos app on my 15PM, it was horrible and not at all how I remember the Pixel 7 being when I had it last year. My in-laws always close their eyes or don't smile in photos, so I'm excited to tinker with these photo editing tools. Really interested in all of the AI features packed into the Pixel this year.

Assuming all is well I'll probably use BlueBubbles at some point for iMessage features, I had that set up with my S23+ on a virtual Mac on my PC, it was flawless for the most part. I have been somewhat successful in having my relatives start using WhatsApp for video calling, been slowly planting / cultivating that seed for some months haha.

Black Friday deals start this week in the states. 8 pro starts at $799. If they bump the trades back up I’ll probably buy one. Right now it says like $150 for my p7.
If this brings the 8 Pro 256gb down to $860, that's a triple major go for me / will likely exchange it.

Here in the UK we don’t get that deal, it’s £100 Google Store credit.

I've been using Samsung's browser the last few days and it's noticeably smoother compared to Chrome.
There is so much lag and stutter in Chrome.

I also like that it's possible to move the address bar to the bottom and the little scroll handle is great.

I can really recommend Samsung Internet.

Yup. I've used Samsung browser for years now on Android. By far and away the best browser IMO. 👌🏼

I love when I read an article by someone who is a "professional" reviewer and writer and they say something like the stainless steel frame on the Pixel 8 Pro is prone to scratches. I just kind of lose faith in the competence of them when they get basic facts wrong and have been using the device for a month??

The review was overall positive but the end was odd. I also had the Pixel 7 Pro since launch and it didn't have major software bugs at all. The Tensor G2 was not great but it wasn't awful either. It did run hot and have poor battery life but day to day performance was fine. Never had any major issues with the phone.

I love the design and feel of the Pixel 8 Pro. It has one of the best screens I have used in a while. I still think the color temperature or balance on the Pixel 7 Pro was perfect but mostly flat screen and rounded corners and edges just make you want to hold the phone.

When you consider what is most important in interacting with a phone a lot of times ergonomics is not considered? I think Google did an amazing job with the industrial design and ergonomic design of the Pixel 8 Pro further solidifying the unique Pixel design language.

On top of that the screen is one of the most important things on a smartphone. One thing I give Apple props for is always having good quality screens and always using a flat screen. Even Apple LCD screens on the iPhone 11 in HD look amazing.

Google gave the Pixel 8 Pro one of the best screens in the industry. Speakers are significantly better as well.

The Aluminum frame would have looked better in a deep blasted finish that has a bit of texture or a brushed finish to match the blasted glass. I know a lot of people consider polished with premium but any polished surface will scratch easily vs a brushed finish which can hide scratches and a blasted finish can wear better as well although it can scratch and show a shiny surface underneath.

Samsung has the best solution with Aluminum armor which is a hardened coating. Stainless steel looks better and is a harder metal but it adds a ton of unnecessary weight. Titanium looks great on paper and is all the rage but from a material engineering standpoint it is not a good choice as a frame for a phone. The problem with Ti is that it is an ultra rigid metal with little give. It is incredibly strong and rigid without breaking which is extremely useful in certain situations. In the example of a phone frame where the frame actually has to absorb impact or it will transfer all of the kinetic energy to other parts of the phone. If Apple has used a Ti frame without the aluminum base it would be even more rigid than it is. Only a 1mm thick piece of Ti is wrapped around the iPhone and it is bonded to Aluminum which holds all the internal parts. That flat aluminum base will absorb some impact but if the entire frame was Ti when the phone drops and hits a hard surface the damage to the screen and back glass and internal boards and wiring could all get damaged worse than stainless steel or all aluminum because those metals absorb some of the impact of a drop where the Ti will transfer all of it.

Ti is also naturally soft and will scratch as easily as aluminum if not hardened or treated.

Sorry, not on topic but I kind of get annoyed by all the people who now want Titanium on everything. I love Titanium but not in a phone. At five times the cost and no benefit to the end user it is just not a smart choice for phones. Aluminum is actually one of the best choices for a phone frame. It is strong, light, malleable under stress, resists corrosion.

Another option would be a carbon fiber frame as it would have the same attributes as aluminum but be non conductive which could be really useful in a phone. A recycled ocean plastic glasstic back with gorilla glass victus front. That would be a extremely light and strong phone with great reception. This is what I want to see, not Titanium.....

top tip for anyone restoring a google back up, don;t change the grid layout whilst the apps are downloading, unless you want to readd your apps....

FYI, in the U.S. Best Buy’s P8 and P8P discounts are live. $859 for the 256gb Pro is a nice deal. I returned the open box 128 Pro that I ordered and didn’t open it in order to avoid restocking fee.
