Sent off my Pixel 4a 5G ($155) which is on the final year of updates for the P8 Hazel ($549). In other news, Apple gives in and will adopt RCS messaging, I did not see that coming. 🤓

I hadn’t been to the front page of MacRumors yet when I saw your comment. I thought you were joking around. Didn’t see that coming. Maybe hell is freezing over. ;)

Nope and I honestly was shocked when I read that. They had NO reason to adopt RCS as their messaging system is a good hook for the Yoots of this country. The blue vs green bubble has served them well.

Is this a sign of Apple trying to play nice with others? NO...they see the writing on the wall so to speak with the EU.
First USB-C then iMessage. I think Apple was choosing to do some of this on their own to get in front of any more regulations.

The European Union, for example, has been working on legislation that would have required Apple to make changes to iMessage to make it available on other platforms. With RCS, iMessage will no longer have as many benefits that are unavailable cross-platform.

I ordered the hazel colored case for the P8 ($10 off BF promo $24.95). How are the official Google cases for the Pixel 8? Has anyone had problems with theirs?

Funny thing is RCS most benefits customers in the US as standard text messaging has much lower engagement everywhere else in the world.

And using RCS isn’t going to change the blue vs green bubble dynamic as that will still be there. Group messaging will still likely continue to be a dumpster fire for groups of mixed users. What will improve is sharing of media. And the rest of the world will continue not caring as they live in the WhatsApp world. 🤷‍♂️

I agree that RCS adoption by Apple is a preemptive move to further keep their lockin and make RCS as poor an experience as possible and then claim the superiority of iMessage.

They also know the EU has Apple in it's sights. So they either make as minimal a change as possible and be in some control and be able to say they are acting in good faith then have regulations force their hand.

We will see what happens. If things get better between Apple and Android it will make me a happier Mac and iPad user then feel like I am ostracized for not using an iPhone.

I am sorry but using a Pixel phone right now means I can do things I just can't do on an iPhone yet and those things are actually really useful. Once Apple catches up and I have enough money to buy an iPhone then I may go back or if an up to date affordable iPhone is available I will be waiting.

So, got the update prompt a couple days ago. I do have auto update toggled off (I think?) So that means the cat and mouse game of being up to date and keeping root is going to come up soon.

Debating what to do, just update every so often or just give up being rooted. Hmmm 🤔 tough call. The device is on a main line I don't use for much else... Mostly communication. Could swap lines out and do something else for the main. The secondary line I'd probably use the thing more. Hmmm, just a sim card swap away (still using one of those relics).

Maybe grab a pixel tablet for my rooting / media consumption fix.

I am getting a little more into the device however. The case did help with grippiness. I haven't changed the launcher over to nova yet either.

FYI, the official Google cases for the Pixel 8 Pro have been discounted to $19.99 (43% off) on Amazon, probably for BF. I picked up the Blue and Mint colors.

Mous case fail 😬 short drop to the concrete and 3 of the edges of the aluminum frame were damaged pretty good. Debating on getting it fixed or just buying a new one with the black Friday discounts and my Google store credit.

Yeah, that's why my go to cases for any phone are the wallet or armored cases that have full protection, front to back. If the phone is not in a wallet case, i'm extra careful.
Yup yup I hear ya ...I'm always extra careful but unfortunately sometimes it just hits a certain way especially with thinner cases

Just noticed Amazon (UK) are knocking £50 off the Pixel 8 Pro, you have to add the phone to the basket and then it shows as £949

I have the Sky Blue, Coral and Charcoal official Google cases for the P8 Pro. I really love using them. No issues at all with any of mine. Few points to note which will apply to the official P8 cases too:

Definitely a premium case from Google
Right level of grip with the smooth
Silicone is the right amount; not too thick or thin so feels part of the Pixel. So far, no peeling or change of colour
Never feels like I'll drop it out of my hand either using it or carrying it
Easy to hold for one hand usage
Enough screen edge space to allow a decent fit for most screen protectors
Edges don't slip at the sides like I've experienced with Apple silicone cases.
A raise of about 1mm around the camera bar when placing down
Antenna, speakers and USB-C perfectly aligned and cut
Works in hot temperatures well, doesn't feel too warm
All buttons feel premium and work flawlessly
G logo and colours look fantastic, people do comment on the colour!
Very easy to take on and off; this point is important as I interchange cases a lot
Does pick up some lint in a deep pocket but nowhere near as bad as the iPhone silicone case which feels too grippy for pockets
In terms of a drop test, obviously an armoured case is preferential here but edge protection is great. Rear is great except for the camera bar but you'd have to be unlucky to drop it on the camera first
Coupled with a decent tempered glass screen protector the official case should offer enough protection for most people

At $19.99, that US Black Friday promo is a steal, we don't have such decent BF offers in the UK or EU from Google.

I'm still waiting for the Mous case to come back into stock on the Google store for comparison, although I'm more worried about drop protection now.

Also waiting for a premium leather case to launch otherwise I'll go with Bellroy (ordered then cancelled) or similar.

Sorry to hear this, must have hit the edge directly on the concrete. Thanks for sharing with us. I am waiting on a Mous case but now having doubts after your drop fail and it's pretty expensive.

See if Google can actually replace yours for a new one. Their CS is usually pretty positive in my experience, certainly in the UK and EU. BF deals are decent though everywhere.

Thanks for your impressions. After I placed the order I had second thoughts and tried to cancel based on several Amazon reviews where one reviewer posted pics and stated that the rubber had chipped on the edge of the USB-C port hole. Another stated and showed with pics how the phone and case got some damage from a not-so significant drop.

I was torn between the Bay and the Porcelain color phones and chose porcelain instead even though blue and in particular sky blue are my two favorite colors. I still don't regret my choice but now I can have both. I'll need to resist putting the phone in my pocket to avoid lint accumulating on the case.

Edit: I used my Google $10 off promo code and ordered the Coral case for the 8 Pro.

So that's two things Apple is forced to do what Android uses. Guess they are losing their grip on,.....we want to be our own thing.
