Tbf, Google never match the prices of other competitor's flagship prices. Granted, you might claim they are cutting corners... but it's not as if they are placing the cost on the consumer.

If they used the storage, modems, radio, etc that you are criticizing the Pixel over.... then the price might reflect that of the flagship competitors. S23U and 15PM were both launched at $1200, while the Pixel Pro 8 starts at $1k... that's why I kind of push on back the point of cutting corners.

I gotta say I disagree. That might have been the case more a few year back, but not as much this year, especially with the highest end models.

This year, if you compare the iPhone PM 15 with a Pixel 8 Pro, of the same storage size (256 GB), then you're looking at $1200 vs $1060. Subjective things aside, for $140 more you get a superior build, chip, storage, radio, modem, biometrics, USB 3.2. I think that's a decent amount for $140 more.

If you start looking at the Pixel 8 vs the regular iPhone, then the argument for the Pixel gets a lot stronger.

I agree with you- $1200 for iPhone 15 or S23 Ultra is a different level than Pixel 8 Pro.

Non-Pro model iPhone's have a 60Hz display so not quite an apples to apples comparison vs current Android offerings from many manufacturers on that front.

Pixel 8 Pro compared to S23+ 256 GB at $1059 is far more comparable in many ways. With recent $200 manufacturer discounts on both, it is more compelling though not necessarily a slam dunk purchase in my opinion. (I got a P8Pro at $325 off and S23+ 256 at $300 off, plus nearly $100 more via other incentives).

100%. I was going off retail. The P8 Pro for $200-$300 off is a steal.

Anyone install the January update yet? It contains a camera update that fixes crashing issues. Curious if it also fixes the very cool color profile when taking some photos. My e-sim is in my iPhone and I’m not by my Pixel at the moment, I’ll try it later today.

Sometimes I love Google. Other times I hate Google. This is a time of love!

New kernel is always very good news. It won't make the phone seem probably any different to the end user but it allows a lot of stuff under the hood to work better and may result in some slight efficiency gains and performance gains.

It also means that at a base level we have a more modern code base which is good for the future.

With the Pro charcoal case, the P8P 256 GB was $805.00 total including tax.

Tempted to hang onto it but most likely returning to Google this week.
You gotta do what makes you the happiest. Don't over think it.

Sometimes it is an almost impossible choice so you just got to go with your gut and don't look back. Get whatever phone you enjoy using the best. I am not biased in your choice but I am in my own.

For me the Pixel 8 Pro has been nothing but a pleasure since day one. Okay, setup had a hiccup but after that it has been smooth sailing. As Google refines and updates it only gets better. I have a Samsung phone too and it was supposed to be my primary with the Pixel as a backup and it has worked out the other way around?? So I can understand that it can be tough and confusing when trying to pick between devices.

Good luck whatever you decide!!

Yup and in the grand scheme of things: all good for the evolution of the platform, in the long run.

Some of us seeking "mobile nirvana"... may have chosen a different (manufacturer) path though, we are all moving in the same general direction:

AWAYYYY from /@\pple lol
Exactly it moves the entire platform forward.

I am not moving away from Apple. I am just not drinking the Apple Kool aid. Every platform has strengths and weaknesses. I think both platforms are great. What I have a problem with is the very thing people like best which is the "ecosystem" which I call manufacturer lock down. If Apple would allow this wonderful communication across platforms then I might not even be writing this. The other thing is Apple makes a lot of decisions that just anger me.

That all being said, Apple hardware when you pay enough is pretty sweet regardless of the device. They tend to work well for a long time. Apple is pretty secure by default across devices and generally with most users data. I also like MacOS and iPadOS and iOS.

Why I like the Pixel line so much is that despite benchmarks and all of that is that since the P6 they have stuck with a unique design language and have a unique software feature set not found in any other phone as yet. The Tensor G3 and series while not being the best in raw performance have gushered in a new era of AI and generative AI in smartphones. You can argue if that is good or not but if you know anything about tech AI is revolutionary. Since Google has implemented things like call screening, speech to text, Assistant, a ton of stuff in the camera and video, and more. These things are the power of AI and no fast chip is going to do these types of things without an advanced neural processing system or TPU as Google calls it.

We are now seeing Qualcomm double down on AI and Samsung swiftly putting it to use. If Google had never developed Tensor would we be here with Qualcomm at this point?

So while I still like Apple and iPhones the development in Android with the Pixel line and the upcoming s24 series is extremely exciting and iPhone has Titanium and 5x zoom?? So I am waiting for the iPhone SE new model to release that replaces the current dinosaur. If it is nice enough and affordable enough then I will get it. Otherwise for the foreseeable future I am in Android in terms of phones.

I personally think the Pixel 8 Pro is a great phone which I've had now since launch, I've had no issues with the modem got signal everywhere I've been, had no overheating issues even when using satnav & the battery life for me at least has been superb & even the fingerprint sensor has been fine for me, & this is somebody that came from a S23 Ultra & I've not regretted at all swapping to the Pixel 8 Pro.

Over the next few months with a few more hopefully bug free updates I can see the Pixel 8 Pro getting even better, more so in the camera department, one thing that Google really needs to do is give it's users more customizable option's within the Pixel UI, having both Glance & the Google search bar as none removable widgets is an annoyance to say the least, I think the next feature update due out in March will let you at least turn of Glance fully which is a start.

This year I finally won't be tempted to get the S24 Ultra, as I know I'll only end up being disappointed again with the over saturated over sharpened images it camera will continue to produce unless you really mess with the setting, even with all this AI fandango Samsung is now spouting.

Getting the most insane battery life on my Pixel 8 Pro at the moment.

Look at today! I feel like I've used my phone a lot today and it's almost 11pm, I still have 29% and over 8 hours SoT!

I have been getting really good battery life too.

I have to wait a full cycle since I recently charged my phone to give some stats.

I can safely say that I get a solid 30% better battery life out of the Pixel 8 Pro over the Pixel 7 Pro with the same settings and doing the same things. That is a conservative estimate.

It's not my main device, but I've been playing with a Pixel 8. I'm having a problem with Android Auto, it won't auto play music/podcasts after I've taken a call or used assistant. I have to manually hit play again.

Is that a setting? I've not had much look Googling for answers.

I have not had the issue. Some may have to do with your car and type of system you have. Some are more finicky than others. I am sorry I can't help you more but you can go into your phone under android auto and check the settings and see if there is something that might be causing a problem.

Also with Pixel phones, go to tips and support in settings and scroll down to contact us and contact Google directly. If they can't resolve the issue on the spot then they will flag it and it is possible in an update to android auto they may fix it. It is important to give feedback to Google when you have an issue with your Pixel. It may help a lot of other people too!

Pixel 9 Pro renders looking great. I love the 6.5" size, it's just right, not large, and not small. And more rounded shape is even better, what would you rather hold in your hand a smooth rounded river rock or a jagged sharp edge mountain rock?

This render looks a lot like the other Android iPhone copy, the Nothing Phone 2.0 I will say I'm excited to hear about the Nothing Phone 3 as well, rumors it will be nearer flagship level phone, while still keeping similar design.

I am telling you Nothing phones are the one to watch as the highest probability of success in a competitor to Samsung or Google. Give em some more time. I say by Nothing phone 5 it will be at flagship level of not before.

I love the flat design. I have a s24 plus on pre order because I love the flat edges and slimmer bezels. This looks very similar. I like it. I am sure after a generation or two people might get bored but honestly flat is where it's at.

If Google added Gorilla armor glass and ufs 4.0 on the Pixel 9 then I might upgrade. The Pixel 8 Pro is already pretty close to perfect in design. The one thing I really hope this render is wrong about is the camera bump.

I love the way the frame wraps into the camera bar. The way they have it in the new renders it is a separate bar island which I don't like?

They moved the camera bump away from the edges on the pixel fold so I expect the same with this render being most likely correct

Yeah, you are probably right. Darn. I don't know. Love the front and sides but I love my camera bar even if it is a scratch magnet. I find the bar connected to the frame a bold design but it is probably expensive.

So I may just hold on to my Bay Pixel 8 Pro a while longer. But who knows. The design might grow on me.

I think I prefer the design of the s24 plus with the cameras just sticking out of the back.

It is a big design change on the back for sure. I wonder what the Pixel 10 is going to look like and if all of the rumors of TSMC are true and if it even matters since Exynos 2400 is a decent chip so far. I am still pulling for Google to stick with Samsung and for Samsung to succeed in finally designing a competitive chip in Exynos.
