I think it’s unfair to class it as midrange personally. This is not a midrange phone IMO.
It’s just not top tier flagship but then it isn’t top tier flagship prices either.
Appreciate the price looks set to increase but it’s still nowhere near the £1200 of the 15 PM or the S23 U.

I think we need to see what changes have been made with day to day use first as hopefully there is improvement to battery life and thermals but if not then it’s all fair criticism.
I don't think the whole phone is midrange. To be clear I think some of the hardware choices Google has made put some hardware features in the not top tier range.

Time to ditch this forum, this is a super strange site, where everyone's an iPhone user still, and then maybe also an Android user second. Guess not wow.

I thought this subforum was mostly [H]ardcore Android users, that ditched the walled garden of Apple, and don't use iPhone's anymore.

Oh well...was fun while it lasted. LOL I'm joking I'll stick around, if the iSheep and Apple apologists will still have me, a non Apple fan.

We love our Android phones don’t you dare to bail out now my friend …one thing that I love about our chats on different threads on Android side here is all the different opinions and ways we all go about changing up our phones …I think it’s great …

Back to the topic at hand. It's seems quiet now on the Pixel 8 leaks. Where the last couple days stuff was leaking out like a break in a damn.

All calm before the big day event tomorrow maybe?

I'm super pumped to see real hands on videos of these new phones. I wonder if Marques of MKBHD has had his 8 Pro for a month already LOL

I started with the iPhone I think from the iPhone 6.. I've been with the blackberry phones and also had the palm treo... And I started with Android with the droid x... It's been a fun ride and continues to be a good one..

My first smartphone was an AT&T Tilt (rebadged HTC TyTN II) though I used many PDAs prior (Palm device as well as Dell and Compaq Windows PDAs) to that.

I distinctly recall falling into the camp of those who initially thought the iPhone was a feature gimped device (2G, no stand alone GPS, no copy/paste, etc) and didn’t understand the hype. After 2 or 3 defective Tilts that AT&T replaced, I called it a day and picked up a refurb original iPhone. Since then I‘ve had one iPhone from every single generation. First taste of Android was with the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 tablet. Since then I’ve had at least 12-15 other Android devices (mostly phones with a sprinkling of tablets and smartwatches) and usually have continuously had at least one Android in rotation with an iPhone. That’s what drew me here—a site primarily focused on Apple but with a subforum full of folks similar to myself who live a bit in various ecosystems.

I would argue that Google is charging top tier prices though? I think once you get into the $900 range you can no longer scrimp on hardware specs and expect the software to compensate for it. Isn't the Pixel 8 pro expected to be $999 or $899 this year? At that price you can no longer have mid range hardware and expect the software to make up for it.
I can pick up my P7P and the software experience is top notch. But then the display is less bright than my S23U and 15PM. It is not as bright outdoors as the others. The FPS works well but you have to hold your finger on it a little longer to get a good read. Then the sound is not on par as the other 2 as well. The battery is not on the same level as the other 2 as well.
I love the Pixel models because the software experience is always so great. But I don't think we should let Google off the hook anymore for mid-range hardware.

Much more articulate version of what I was trying to say. Software is great but especially on Android, it’s easier to approximate the ‘Pixel’ software experience on other phones using launchers, etc, while hardware deficiencies are permanent.

This is 100% why I made the decision I did. I am really interested in Google software but there are just too many little sacrifices you have to make with their hardware.

This exactly.

Hey, all are welcome here—you’re a longtime poster here and we’d miss your energy. Last I checked, no Apple ownership requirement to chat here. 😜

I don't want to leave this forum. Most of you guys and girls are pretty cool and have good conversations and I like your viewpoints. Some of you not so much but thank God for the ignore button for the douchebags.
Thought we had a GrumpyMom 2.0 then!

Yeah I agree. Fingerprint reader being the biggest one. There’s cost cutting and then just being stubborn and not listening to customer feedback.
Very much an own goal from big G.

But it’s interesting, reading other people’s follow up posts here just now after I replied to you. These ‘sacrifices’ people talk about when going Pixel. I don’t think any of them come close to the sacrifice of a Samsung flagship. Every single year it’s the same criticism. Shutter lag. It’s mentioned in a lot of reviews I watched of the S23 U and for the price of that phone I find it completely unacceptable. But in this subforum people lord the S23 U as the best Android. For me, that’s a compromise I would never make as I’ve had Samsung flagships before where I’ve ended up with a blurry mess of my dog in indoor lighting because the camera just isn’t capable.

I guess the point I’m making is, every phone has its downsides. The perfect device does not exist. But I think Google has had a right roasting here for some valid reasons and others I’m a bit 🤨 about.

You do make some great points. I wouldn't consider the Pro line up of hardware as mid-range, Google seem happy to sit somewhere in a grey area of close to top tier flagships without bringing the hardware into full flagship territory. Pixel prices are reflective of this; for the equivalent iPhone these start at $1200 / £1200 for the 15 Pro Max which is at least €300 / £300 extra. I get why some are happy to pay the extra to Apple. Video in particular on the iPhone is still best in class. I bought a 15PM myself, finding it hard to fault bar the still non-customisable iOS and potential drop factor! Apple ecosystem is still the best too.

However, if you then consider the pre-order bundle deal Google offer with the watch which is about $349 / £349, the 8 Pro looks superb value compared to Apple, what Pixel's have always been about. Hoping more people join Google's ecosystem.

I do understand the stick Google got for the heat thermals, optical FPS & mediocre battery life on the 7 Pro. This is not acceptable on a $899 device. Let's see if any have been fixed for the 8 Pro; if not Google will certainly deserve the criticism this year. Display should be top draw now with the 8 Pro. Looking forward to the hands-ons & early reviews!

I'm coming from the Nexus days and I'd love for Google to now go all in on amazing flagship hardware to couple the Pixel software experience as part of their ecosystem. I think that is what we all expected with the 8 Pro. In fact, I'd pay Apple high prices to Google if they did. What is very encouraging is the Pixel Fold hardware is a definite clear step forward from any previous Pixel or Nexus of the past.

Google is going in the right direction incorporating better AI into the software. I'd really enjoy if Apple or Samsung did similar to make the user experience more fun and push tech further.

This sub-forum is better than most Android forums. Everyone here is into their tech & appreciate both Android and Apple (well most!) with different perspectives / opinions on each.

I agree with your points but for the love of god don't mention shutter lag on the S23 Ultra, you'll open up a can of worms!! One of the main reasons I sold my S23 U actually. That and the unwieldy size of it, its a beast! Also the moon shots I took were not real lol
Also, my missus said it looked too big in my jeans, she's never ever said that before.

The iOS / iPhone forum has some very entertaining and ridiculous threads, haha.

I used to be two phones McGee until about 6 months ago and love phone tech so I browse both iPhone and non-iOS forums. Every year for as long as I can remember I used an iPhone and Android (either a Pixel or Galaxy) at the same time. The S23+ was the best Android phone I've owned. I traded in my Pixel 7 for it this past January. Like everyone else I want the Pixel to just make that leap into high-tier hardware but it never happens. I can't believe they haven't upgraded the fingerprint sensor. That's just inexcusable to me. The only thing worse is Apple using a 60hz display on the regular 15 phones. The Pixel 4 was my favorite Pixel, they nailed it, imo. Ever since then I've been disappointed.

I used Blue Bubbles / AirMessage with my Pixel and S23+ and it worked well for the most part, but it was a road hazard as they didn't (at the time) work with Android Auto. It also turned into a real chore running a virtual MacOS on my PC and as the iMessages added up things started to lag.

I sold my S23+ about 5 months ago and stuck with my 14PM, now have the 15PM and it is an incredible phone. I paid the $99 for a developer account so I can sideload apps. I now have a modded YouTube app and Kodi w/ Seren + real debrid on my iPhone, which I never thought I'd see. Those two apps were a big reason why I used Android.

The Pixel 8 sadly is a hard pass for me, for now. Perhaps the S24 series will wow me, but as of now I too am sticking with iPhone only.
Modded YouTube on an iPhone? How?

A short tale by Aneres11.

Tomorrow we rejoice. The dawn of a new Pixel is upon us.
We shall frantically place orders and compare shipping estimates.
Boast about deals exclusive to our country, or get tearful at being ripped off compared to our fellow posters residing elsewhere.
We shall tell of our colour choices. Post YT videos galore of the reviewers who have had these phones for the last 2 weeks. Marvel at the newness, and find fault to argue over.
And then, after an agonising week of waiting, we will take delivery. Some returning immediately, others giving the inevitable overheating and battery drain “a few days to settle”.
People will tell tales of old of how registering the same thumb twice will help the useless fingerprint scanner. Others will encourage you disable absolutely everything good about the phone to be able to make it through a days usage without reaching for a charger.
We will then all agree that it takes amazing photos, the thread will quieten and only the die hards will remain.

The end.

I can hardly wait! 😂😂

Great points all around! Personally for me...i don't want a Google Watch to be honest. I would rather companies give me a storage spec bump than a product i will have to now invest time and energy to sell or give away.

I remember the Nexus days of owning and flashing so many roms it was crazy and time consuming but so much fun back then. Now the features we flashed new roms for are already baked into the software.

I think Google has some of the most advanced smartphones in the business. The technology and AI is unmatched IMHO. I wish they would match the S23U and 15PM in hardware and call it the Pixel Pro Ultra (or something similar) and charge more for the phone like maybe $1100? Can we all imagine a Pixel phone with the latest and greatest camera hardware with their computational algorithm? It would be phenomenal!

I am excited to see what the Pixel 8 Pro will be when announced tomorrow!

Nah. Her account says “cancelled.” I she’s gone for good, sadly. Did she say why she left?
The post is deleted now and I only skimmed it but she asked to be banned because of the people here, something along those lines.

Regarding Pixel phones vs the higher-end Android competition, not iPhone's.

I subscribe to a lot of YouTube tech channels, and I recall this Summer seeing a ton of videos about 6 months later with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, or 9 months later with the Pixel 7 Pro, or months later how does the S23U stack up to the P7P?

And surprisingly a lot of these reviewers, 9 out of 10 said, yeah the Samsung 23U clearly has the better hardware, nicer screen, better battery life, etc... But they all said there's something special and unique about the Pixel Pro experience, some "magic sauce" as they'd say, that makes it fun to use, smooth fluid UI, great AI features like Call Screen, and voice dictation, etc... They all said on paper, yes no doubt the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is just the better smartphone, but in user experience the Pixel 7 Pro was just more fun and joyful to use daily, even with it's hardware quirks and issues.

And i was surprised to hear that, but I do agree.

Some great recent posts.

I guess for me Apple just have that extra level of trust with their devices that Google lacks. That’s not to say Apple devices don’t have issues (the overheating in the 15’s being most recent) but the overall package (especially CS) is a superior one and why people stick with them.

I would just love if everyone universally loved the Pixel 8 Pro and then went on and bettered it with the 9 Pro. Make people make a difficult decision with their phones.

I was outside in the sun earlier taking a break from work and one thing that annoys me always though does not stop me from buying Pixel is outdoors visibility...my iPhone looks outstanding outdoors and the S23U was the same way ....but Google being Google holds down the brightness on their devices on purpose ...rant over lol just had me thinking since I was viewing our posts here on the Pixel ..smh

That's kinda like downclocking a CPU to keep it from overheating. That would kill battery life if they cranked up the brightness although this year the NITS on the 8 Pro's are supposed to be much higher.

NITS were increased on Fold and it looks great for the first minute or so B4 software kicks in and I'm like WTH ...
