I was outside in the sun earlier taking a break from work and one thing that annoys me always though does not stop me from buying Pixel is outdoors visibility...my iPhone looks outstanding outdoors and the S23U was the same way ....but Google being Google holds down the brightness on their devices on purpose ...rant over lol just had me thinking since I was viewing our posts here on the Pixel ..smh

One of the best rumors to me, were the display upgrades;

-FLAT screen now
-1hz to 120hz LTPO tech
-8 Pro going up to 2400 nits ( brighter than the 15 PM and S23U )
-8 going up to 2000 nit

We will know tomorrow if those rumors are legit or not. And I totally agree, the Pixel screens have always been very dim, not bright enough, year after year, hopefully the Pixel 8 line finally changes that.

Yes let's hope so ...and don't hold it down ...I understand their thinking about battery wise but we can find a happy spot for most people.. Hopefully good news on P8 Day !

"The Pixel 7 Pro has a peak brightness of around 1600 nits, not bad, but nothing compared to the supposed Pixel 8 Pro display which has supposedly jumped up to a mighty 2400 nits. That's a 50% increase on last year's model. The entry-level Pixel is getting a similar amount of love too."

The problem with the 7 Pro is that the screen keeps dimming when the phone gets hot which happens quickly in the sun.

The screen uses a lot of battery and there is smearing at low brightness.
Hopefully the 8 Pro will have a much better screen.

Android 14 will be released tomorrow!

What is interesting to me is whilst the S23 Ultra is currently the best Android phone money can buy in terms of tech, I'd love to see Samsung go in the direction of Google with AI stuff and overall software experience. OneUI just doesn't cut it for me, still too much bloat and unless you know what to do with adding skin overlay & removing Samsung apps your left with OneUI that is pretty frustrating.

Google has always treated its Nexus and now Pixel range as an experiment each year. Why they don't just invest serious money into it now to fully compete with Apple and Samsung is mine boggling.

For me, the best overall smartphone this year is the 15 Pro Max, despite the non customisable experience you get with iOS.

I'm still going to be pre-ordering an 8 Pro on Wednesday as I love where Google are taking the software experience plus camera quality is usually best in class. But, like us all, we have got to ask the big question why doesn't Google now give us overall top-tier hardware that the Pixel line up really demands.
I may pre-order a P8P too- depending on the deal and potential trade-in bucks for past mobile devices.

I think there are enough fluffy extra bits to keep me on the Samsung bandwagon for now (1st time ever owning one of their mobiles!). I've heard from many friends and colleagues how much that love the hardware but hate the extraneous junk. Pixel flavor is also intriguing however past leak "ohh and ahh" generally turned to meh oftentimes. Here's hoping Big-G does something BIG for a change (and maybe scales the web site better to meet/exceed the demand).

Samsung is already leveraging the AI stuff (in a "import free"/more efficient workflow sort of way) through the Adobe partnership. Access to the advanced Lightroom Mobile features requires a $10/month subscription fee (except for those of us who already have an LR subscription). I never signed up for Google One extras to fiddle with photos (HandyPhoto and other apps on both Apple/Android platforms do a decent enough job) so can't comment on that other than it is possibly less expensive... I'm already paying for Adobe "expertise" in that realm so no net increase.

OnePlus, Samsung and others approach of layering extra bits on top of the core/pure system reaches a much wiider audience of users with a wide variety of technical abilities. Some of those niceties come at a cost in terms of extraneous bloatware. Thankfully there are tools available to disable many without having to root your device and a few are reaching a point that regular humans can use them too hehe

Pixel photo snapping has been impressive since 4a days and no doubt will improve with P8/P8P. There are other aspects far less impressive on their "pure" Android implementation for an aging lazy person like ME ;)

Best of luck scoring an earlier ship date!

Kind of off topic, but just for fun I surfed Best Buy's website, and I was shocked at the deals going for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. They'd offer me $1,000 trade-in for my Pixel 7 Pro, and a monthly payment of just $2.78 / month, seriously just three bucks a month.

Looked at the Galaxy S23 Ultra on Best Buy's site, and no way such good deals, only offering me $300 for my 7 Pro, and the monthly payment on ATT would be like $28/month ( basically thirty bucks a month ) Best Buy had some good offers a week ago, like $749 if bought on ATT and Verizon, but now it's back up to $1,199.

Why is Best Buy just giving super crazy good deals on the brand new iPhone, but kinda crappy no deals on the 8 months old S23U?

Well I'm back after my 2nd banishment to the time-out room in the last few weeks lol. The kindergarten cops here kill me. God forbid you let adults be adults. Whatever.

I must be an outlier as ive been very happy with my 7 Pro. Android 14 has even made the thermal issues much better. Of course the Samsung chip still has issues but battery life and heat have been really solid on the last 2 14 beta's.

I feel the great software outweigh any hardware issues. I think software is king and I love the cameras mostly. Honestly I've thought about going back to an iPhone to match my MacBook Pro and iPad but the Google AI features are hard to live without and have kind of spoiled me for any other phones. And Apple forcing you to fill your screen with anything and everything I hate. 4 icons on the bottom with no widgets is all I want from my "Pro" phone.

Ok going off the rails here. Bottom line is I need to see the actual retail pricing and trade in values. They gave me 600 for the 6 Pro and with the 200 dollar credit the 7 Pro was less than 400 bucks. For some reason, while flirting with the Pixel Fold, my 7 Pro was "only" worth 480 so I squashed that romance quick. Good job, Google devaluing your own phones while offering mad cash for the iPhone switchers, which I can't imagine were many. As an aside, it's hard for me to reconcile their 1800 dollar folding phone is running a year-older chip than their slab phones. I don't really understand that.

Guess we'll find out soon enough what the deal is. My gut feeling is I'd like to upgrade if my 7 Pro is worth the same 480 it was for the Fold and hold on to that for 2 years until their alleged fully custom chip for the 10. Unless that old roadmap was true and we get the same "Pro" cameras on a smaller form factor. I hate big phones but I use zoom a lot so I'm kinda stuck.

That iPhone offer is an AT&T deal, not a Best Buy exclusive. Part of the “deal” is a 36 month contract extension with AT&T.

But still, they'll give me $1,000 bucks for my Pixel 7 Pro, and I'd just need to pay $2.78 / month X 36 months = a hundred bucks. So basically a brand new 15 PM would cost me a C-note. Not a bad deal.

Yeah, as @jdlindsey7 mentioned, that’s a carrier promotion. You could get it as well on Apple’s website or in their stores. Think Verizon and TMobile also have some sort of promotions going on.

The catch for that AT&T deal is two fold—must have one of their unlimited plans and that trade is given to you as bill credits over 36 months. You pay it off early or change provider and you lose the remaining credits.

I already claimed I probably won't pre-order this year, but if trade-ins are really as great as some have claimed I may be a hypocrite and order one lol

I have an old Pixel 4a collecting dust in a drawer. A decent value for that + whatever I could get for reselling the Watch 2 (personally just not a smartwatch person) and I might give the Pixel 8 Pro a try.

Everything will all come down to how much trade in I receive on my pixel 7 256gb. If I have to put down more than $300 out of pocket, then it’s a no go, especially since nothing has been able to pry my SIM card away from my pixel fold. Not going to spend a lot of money on a phone I may use down the road when I’m bored with my fold, especially since I still got my flip 5 on deck waiting for an opening.

Hopefully that's for trading in a 7 Pro and NOT an iPhone Pro Max. 🙏🏼

$1,000 for a 128GB phone is kinda bad on Google's part.
Yeah, that's not far off iPhone Pro pricing. Also, the pricing increases for additional storage don't feel right. I've don't ever recall seeing an OEM do pricing increases that weren't on even $100 increments. Maybe $50 increments but nothing that random.

It most certainly is because you are not getting a phone worth $1K. You are when you buy a flagship iPhone or Galaxy phone. As an uneducated observer what I see here is Google using the Samsung model by pricing the phone real high to get the early adapters knowing the price will drop in a couple of months with discounts.

The initial shock is offset with incentives such as high trade in values and giveaways. So in my case if I were to get $600-$700 trade in on my 7 Pro with a newly released watch, then Google is viewing that as value which is what Samsung does. Except the hardware is better with Samsung.

So in my case, if I were to get $600 for my phone plus use my $200 store credit plus factor in a $350 watch, then you are basically getting the phone for free. That’s probably how Google is looking at it. It’s something that Samsung likes to do with their releases.
