If Google sticks to its 7 year support plan for the Pixel 9/9 Pro, then the 8 Pro and 9/9 Pro's will lose support at the same time because the 9/9 Pro's shipped with Android 14. The exception will be the Pixel 9a because it will ship with Android 15. It all boils down to how important is all the AI stuff in the 9 series to you and if you like the look of the Pixel 8 Pro vs the 9 Pro's.

FYI: You can find the 8 Pro on Ebay brand new for about $675.
Swappa has unlocked P8P starting at $526.
I bought a few item on that site and haven't had an issue.

Does anyone have a list of some of the main Pixel 9-specific AI features? Google is touting AI as one of the major features but much of Gemini can be used outside of the Pixel ecosystem. I have a 4-year old Android and it has recently been updated to replace Google Assistant with Gemini. I guess I just need a bit more reason to go with the Pixel.

Some of the features I can think off the top of my head are:
  1. Add-a-person to a photo
  2. Call summaries
  3. Screenshots app
  4. Studios app

$104.90 additional store credit for being a 2tb Google One subscriber (subscribed for one month to get the deal for $2.49, it's normally $9.99 but on sale)

How did you get the store credit? It is automatically apply? Or, did they send you some type of code?

I think this here is something to look at towards the end of article

Firstly, we do not know the ambient temperature in which the Pixel 9 Pro XL was tested in, as that has a major effect on the chipset’s ability to prevent thermal throttling for as long as possible. Additionally, we reported a while back that even MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300, a chipset fabricated on TSMC’s 4nm N4P process, lost 46 percent of its maximum performance when running the same stress test on the Vivo X100, which is also equipped with a vapor chamber.

That's why I say, you buy a Pixel for Google's magic software. Don't buy them if you fancy top of the line hardware specs because there's a solid chance, you will be disappointed. Samsung's hardware tends to be more robust and an older iPhone will typically outperform the latest Pixel. The Pixel covers all of my basics and if the hardware just so happens to be equal to the task, that's just icing on the cake.

Trust me, I'm a Pixel fan, I also have the S24 Ultra and it's a great and fantastic phone, top of the line #1 Android [H]ardware.

But my Pixel 8 Pro kept calling my name LOL For some reason I find the 8 Pro just a nicer experience to use day in day out, even though it's a far lesser phone than the S24U, there's some special magic in the Pixel I can't put down and it sucks me in.

Yeah, this.
I could not give less of a s**t about performance. Does it work? Yes.
Does it perform like a phone from 10 years ago? No.
Will it do what I need it to do? Yes.

Will a Samsung be slightly less hiccupy? Yes. Do I want a Samsung. God. No.

:D

That's the thing for me is that the Pixel it just works for me. A line stolen from a Steve Job's quote. I own an iPhone just to see what it's like and the phone has gotten the most use these past 3 days in a row (primary phone) in the last 8 months. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is one slick looking piece of hardware but aesthetics only goes so far with me, because the rest of the experience is a huge letdown.

Case in point, we hear how Apple's devices work so effortlessly with one another. Recently I purchased on Ebay a brand new pair of Airpods 2nd gen for $33.58 and yes, they are the real deal and legit. I checked the SN on Apple's website and they even have 5 months warranty remaining. First problem and it's huge is that I can't get these damn things to receive a FW update. I have tried every trick in the book, followed YT videos, nothing seems to work. They are still stuck on the FW they shipped with. Second issue is that they don't magically work with other Apple devices. I have to push the transmit button on the back of the case if I want them to connect for the first time with an iPad, iPhone or my Mac.

With my Pixel's regardless of the earbuds, Pixel Buds Pro's, Galaxy Buds, Sound Core Pro's, Liberty 3 Pro's etc, the Pixel finds them and connects without me pushing any buttons on the case.

I think I'm going to end up wanting the new Buds. I may use my 10% back of store credit towards them.
I want to wait for reviews first though as I do like the current Buds Pro which I've used since they were released, but how much better can they get?
I think I read that ANC was being improved, but I've never felt like it needed to be!

Still disappointed Google haven't embraced Dolby Atmos.

I hope your AirPods are legit, but did you know that fake AirPods are so sophisticated now that the counterfeiters spoof the serial numbers. They should have different numbers for the Airpods AND the case.

Also, if they’re brand new, the warranty should have started the moment you activated them; they shouldn’t be seven months in already.

How many going with the XL size over the smaller 9 Pro?

I'm so torn, as I've always owned the larger Pro phones or XL versions, but lately just wanting a bit smaller phone that's easier to navigate on the go one handed. But worried if I get the 9 Pro I might immediately regret the size. Ugh. First world problems.

I didn't keep mine from last year (sold them) because they didn't have the little stabilizer on them to help keep them in the ear snug.
They have it on this years buds so to me, that's improved.

I need to have that. They work their way loose if it don't have it in there.

I know this doesn't help but I always get the smaller size.
6.8" is to me, just too big to put in my pocket and lug around.
The Folds are not even a consideration for me lol.

I do recall your wife got the smaller one last year and you seemed to really like it.

So i had the P8P and S24U and 15 PM. If you believe the benchmarks the 15 PM should run circles around the other 2 phones. But when using the phones that performance didn't materialize. I mean don't get me wrong my 15 PM is a powerhouse. But when using the phones the speed differences are very minor and slim.

This year it seems Google has but more effort into the Pixel hardware. That should make the Pixel 9 models very nice!
We know they already have some of the best software features in the business :)

I feel you.
I want the smaller model, but didn't want to wait. Terrible, really and very silly 😜 but I had the money aside for one so I plan to try the XL, see how I get on and if I find myself missing a smaller phone I will return close to the return window ending and order the regular 9 Pro. 👍🏼

I have learned two things about you over the years. One, you like some things about iOS, but it is not the operating system for you. Two, you are an XL size phone person.

I say go XL, the times you’ll want smaller will likely be less often than you preferring the larger model and better batttery life.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of that. If what I received were fake Airpods, whoever made them did one helluva job. The SN inside the case matches the SN on the box in even includes the Apple instruction insert inside the box. I watched this 4 year old YT video and nothing stood out that says these are fakes. They connect real easy and stay connected. Amazon had dropped the price recently to $69 so I thought $33.58 was a fair price for Airpods that were made a few years ago.

The only thing that stands out is the 5 month warranty and I agree it should say 12 months and start on the day they were activated.

Oh yeah, we are in agreement. Synthetic benchmarks are one thing and real world is a totally different animal.

I was planning on skipping the pixels this year, but after seeing the regular Pro 9 at Best Buy, holy crap it feels just like my iPhone 15 pro (which I love). It felt so incredibly well built. I got my preorder in. Still keeping my first gen Pixel Fold over upgrading that to the Pro 9 Fold though, don't like that they made that one bigger.
