Am I the only one that's not really interested in this Gemini? Lol I get it it's the new thing. I'm totally okay with my Google Assistant. I think I read somewhere that you can use the Google Assistant even though Gemini comes as default?
Yeah, i'm not interested in Gemini AI or Microsoft's Co-Pilot AI.

Same re Gemini.
One thing I do use all the time though is circle to search.
I just bought my own house after a separation and there were so many times I saw nice home decor items or furniture on people's Instagram pages and just found out where to buy them really easily! 😎

The whole A.I. Artificial Intelligence seems like the wrong naming as of 2024.

When I used to think of what A.I. would be like in the future, it was something like from the movie Her starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson. Almost a real living sentient being inside your computer/ smartphone.

True artificial intelligence to me, would be like something Commander Data was like from Star Trek.

But that type of stuff seems decades away still, were very far away from having that become reality.

But this Gemini stuff is just basic Learning Language Models. It's nothing that amazing, just seems like a new generation of Google Assistant. It's certainly not what I would consider Artificial Intelligence.

To me real A.I. I'm a smartphone would be where I could openly talk to my phone with poor grammar and maybe not speaking clearly and it totally understanding me in handling my commands easily at a whim. I should be able to say call Tom L and not hear ok calling Don L. No call Tom L, ok calling Ron L. Ugh... We're not even there on that stuff yet.

How far away are we realistically from having the Scarlett Johansson type AI from that movie Her?

My point, tagging the phrase A I. in smartphones in 2024 seems a bit far fetched and just not right or accurate. There's no "artificial intelligence" in a Pixel 9.

BB won't honor the initial trade-in value despite receiving an e-mail from BB last week stating that my trade-in value is good for a week. I don't have the energy to argue with them. I'm so mad.
I did the same thing because I was waffling between the Pixel and Fold 6. I did an online chat yesterday and they couldn't do anything about it. I tried calling just now and was transferred 4 times and spent 35 mins on the phone. They could not do anything on their end and told me to email onlinetradein@bestbuy.com. Just did, received an automated reply that it may take 2-3 business days for a reply.

I read on some Reddit thread that people had early success visiting a store, but more recently the employees were unable to process the promo because the system changed, and the managers wouldn't budge.

So, I'm not at all optimistic that we'll see the promo price again. I'll post the outcome when they reply to me. Please post if you end up succeeding!

Call me the curmudgeonly old man but, IMO, not far enough away. Not gonna lie, fully autonomous AI scares the **** out of me. Maybe I’ve seen and read too much science fiction but I don’t want my machines to be able to fully think for themselves. I don’t see how that doesn’t end badly for us some time in the far future.

Now I would absolutely like more capable ‘AI’ functionality in my computing systems that would allow more fully conversational interactions and more robust functionality that doesn’t at some point require me to intervene on a screen because the AI just can’t complete these tasks/requests.

I just don‘t want my AI to be able to sentient or capable of going off and thinking on its own. The science behind it all is way over my head so maybe that’s not something I have to worry about in my lifetime but regardless, the prospects of it freaks me out.

We were supposed to have flying cars by the year 2000, remember that? 🤣

Well in the future, it won't be "humans" visiting planets and exploring deep space.

Future "Earthlings" going to the moons of Jupiter and Saturn and beyond will be Androids or Cybernetic beings.

Even Elon Musk has his concerns! The troubling part is that there's now an AI race by every large tech company on the planet. The question becomes who's first to unlock and have a conversation with the figurative Genie in the bottle? Because once you let the Genie out of the bottle, it's not going back in.

I've seen YT footage of Boston Dynamics Petman (IIRC Google Co) and it's pretty freaky how with AI it was taught to learn how to avoid random obstetrical or the two robot dogs who worked as a team to find a way out of a room by opening the door and holding it open for the other dog to leave first.

I'm not saying the end is nigh but all it takes is a race to beat the other company at AI and by accident they open Pandora's box.

Wow. Let me know how it goes! Classes start today. I just won’t have time to do this.

I can’t believe BB did this. I really fumbled this. I should have just stuck with the Obsidian. I’m so sad.

Hope your kids and their kids like to be weirdos on TikTok and YouTube because all the store jobs and the like that use people now will be gone to robots.
Not a big fan of this AI junk either.

Went to Best Buy to check out the new phones, they had a Pixel 9 pro XL, a Pixel 9, and a Pixel 8a all side by side.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL looked great, the new design and feel in hand is nice, but once navigating around the UI it honestly didn't feel or look a whole lot different than my Pixel 8 Pro.

The smaller Pixel 9 actually felt super nice, but that lower-end phone definitely felt a bit lagger and slower, but as far as the size and feel in hand, my goodness near perfect. I think I might hold off till the Pixel 9 Pro is out, and go that route. Worse case I'll still have my Pixel 8 Pro if I need a larger phone, but the smaller Pixel 9 size just felt right and comfortable. I'm starting to get sick of large phones, and how my thumb doesn't reach all the way to one side, or having to do finger gymnastics and juggling the phone in hand to use one-handed.

Also the P9 pro is $200 more than the P9 and you only get more RAM , a telephoto lens and a different screen resolution. Battery is the same.
Kind of a turnoff for me.
$100 I could see, but $200?

About this AI conversation, I'm one of the few that actually likes it and want it to get better.

I'm impressed by how much I can do with ChatGPT. I use it for work daily (social media, marketing, writing press notes, etc). It can even do translations, generate images... It saves me a lot of time in my work.

On the smartphone side, I think there's still a lot improvement to be made, but a true digital assistant would be wonderful. Even some of the AI editing tools for pictures are useful. I hope more and more improvements are made so we can do common tasks faster and faster.

Sounds like AI can one day replace you for work. Careful what you wish for 🫤

Yeah, who knows. In the end, AI could even replace doctors I'm not scared of the future. That feels like an old way of life, when workers in fabrics were scared of machines. Yeah, sure, jobs were lost, but others were created. We can't seriously expect progress to be stopped. We now have electric cars, powerful computers in our pockets... Progress.

Robots already replacing people. Self checkouts replacing people.

Electric Cars imo is not progress.
I've zero interest in those and doubt we go 100% electric.
Toyota has already made a hydrogen motor.
They will come up with better alternatives while electric cars catch fire and can't be put out and start burning houses down.

Here in NV on the interstate from CA they had a semi truck turn over with lithium batteries in it and the I15 was shut down for 3 days and detour traffic while it burned and then had to be cleared.

They are so far away from perfecting those. The electric grid needs to be upgraded and they have done nothing yet. I think EVs will be scrapped at some point. They aren't selling well now either.

I'm not worried about the future for me,.... It's my kids and their kids.

Social media imo is an evil entity. So much negativity, AI generated false accusations.
We (USA)are one good hack away from being shutdown. We have had a couple small ones.
The new way isn't always the best. Convenience comes with a price.

Hackers stealing identities ....but hey, I just got a $88 check for being in lawsuit for a big company being hacked and stealing people's info lol. My name was in their database though nothing happened to me personally.

Just saying. Sorry for the long rant that isn't Pixel related.
