Maybe it’s an unpopular opinion, but I really like the extra info provided by the Dynamic Island and would welcome it on a Pixel if it meant I’d get a really good face ID equivalent.
100%. Actually, my temptations by what Android has to offer is slowed by the fact that I would really miss dynamic island and live activities. It's so great for NBA/MLB games.

I don't know why certain people expected a HUGE upgrade going from a P8P to a P9P. Memo, just to curb any enthusiasm for next years P10P. People will probably find out that the upgrade from the P9P to the P10P is not going to be as big as they thought. There's only so much you can do with a smartphone. Most if not all of it has already been done. We are now down to yearly colors and and small design changes.

That's where the Pixel watch comes into play for me. I can get live scores on my watch. I wouldn't have a problem with either Face ID or DI if it was behind the screen tech. I just don't like the notch or DI taking away screen real estate.

Uh no.

I'm not purposely looking for negative reviews on the new Pixel phone, that's not me, I LOVE the Pixel line. These are just popping up in my feed, which is telling, that many techies aren't finding the Pixel 9 line that amazing, just more of the same. It's pretty obvious. Why get upset at the obvious? To defend or justify your own purchase?

I think the older I get, I just realize this "smartphone craze" is just silly and kind of dumb now. What are we doing with our lives that we must rush out and get the brand new latest smartphone, to replace a perfectly great smartphone from last year. It's kind of weird and super strange actually. Because at the end of the day, this new phone will work and behave almost no different than last years phone.

As far as purchasing the Pixel 9 Pro XL myself, I have my Google account still open, I have my BB account open, I have ca$h in hand or an S24 Ultra to trade-in, My point I can easily afford to "upgrade" to the new Pixel 9 line right now if I want. But for the first time ever, I'm just not wanting too because of the same old, same old thing.

I think I'm still burned from my Pixel 6 Pro to Pixel 7 Pro experience, I remember that one clearly, when I went from the 6 Pro to 7 Pro a couple years ago, there was like virtually no difference between the two phones, after a week, my 7 Pro felt exactly like my 6 Pro, like literally the exact same phone. And I was mad, like WTF, what was the point of this "upgrade" there's zero difference. I used to call my Pixel 7 Pro the Pixel 6.25 Pro.

Rant over.
I'm not sure what you're expecting though. Tell me the last time there was a smart phone that didn't release with an incremental upgrade?
For me, it's was Pixel 5 to 6. And Google, since that change in approach, has been slowly building and building to these devices. So why would we expect something mind blowing?

For me, I'm looking forward to finally having a premium feeling pixel that has a better battery and a brighter screen outdoors. That, to me, is enough of a reason (not that I need any encouragement).
But anyone looking for a big leap forward needs to look elsewhere but they likely won't find it.

And let's not forget, the Fold HAS been completely revamped for the better across the board. So Google aren't exactly pushing the same thing out year on year (cough, Samsung). But they have no reason to reinvent the wheel with the main Pixel series. It's all about refinement.

This is the most thorough review I’ve read today:

“Future PLC, runs lab tests via the Future Labs department and found that it took over an average of 13 hours to run down the battery on the Pixel 9 Pro and the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Comparatively, the Pixel 8 Pro died after just 9 hours of running the same test.”

It does state the phone gets worse performance than the 8 Pro, but less throttling and no heat issues, which probably attribute to the battery gains.

There are also some knocks against the fingerprint sensor and the PWM.

I can definitely justify the new Google Pixel 9 Fold upgrade, as that actually seems like a pretty big revision and nice update over the previous Pixel Fold. But didn't they skip a second gen Fold, and this new one is actually a 3rd gen Fold sort of?

Like the first Google Pixel Fold came out in 2022?, and then this one two years later in 2024? That would be a big reason it's a more major upgrade, there was a two year development cycle difference? Or I could be wrong on that.

But I'm not a Fold guy, yet. Haven't bought any of them before, and it's not cup of tea yet, they seem too big to carry around, but I'm open to the Fold idea in the future.

Nailed it. Almost makes it pointless to upgrade more than every couple years. Google has room to improve on the SOC but other than that there's not much they could do to upgrade this device beyond what it is. For people that are normal consumers there isn't much reason to upgrade if you have a P7P forward. Foldables are still a maturing technology. That's where you are going to see exciting upgrades year over year.

Really do love the new design though. It looks and feels just like my 15PM in hand other than the OS.

That is exactly what I thought when I checked the P9P XL out at BB.
I mean having the 15 PM build and great feel in the hand only running the Pixel version of Android! That is a huge win in my book!

Fold is only a little more than 1 year old but as it was a first version, there’s always more room to improve.

Yup, that‘s me as well. I’ve always been a big fan of the iPhone hardware and design look. To have a Pixel that looks like a Cupertino product was enticing and it still looks like a Pixel phone. But the added bonus is that my 7 Pro will get maybe another year of OS upgrade, so a $540 trade in offer might be the best i’ll see for that phone.

Anyone having any luck with glass protectors? I bought LK brand (always buy that brand) glass and the fingerprint is borderline unusable. I thought it might be a problem due to the new FP but wanted to give a try anyways. I turned on the option to increase sensitivity for use with screen protectors, but I still have to push down REALLY hard and it only works 50% of the time, if that.

Probably going to get a plastic film instead.

What I have found that sometimes works is to delete and rescan your digit with the new screen protector.

Looks like the inflated trade-in prices are no more at Best Buy in case anyone was thinking of purchasing the phone at the last minute.

Glass screen protectors don't work well with ultrasonic fingerprint readers in my experience. Tried several on my S24U and finally switched to Samsung's plastic film that worked a lot better.

Oh that's not good re the FPS.
I've ordered a Spigen tempered glass that is also arriving today so hoping it's not going to be a return. Don't even know if you can return to Amazon after install?

Anyway, Merry Pixelmas!

YMMV but I just got a refund (without returning) for my tempered glass Torras S24 Ultra screen protectors because they didn't work well with the fingerprint scanner. I just went on the live chat and explained they are not fit for purpose and because I'd tried both of them they didn't want them back.

Watched a good few reviews now and if I'd not got the S24 Ultra this year I'd have 100% gone for the 9 Pro XL.

Ooo great to know, thanks!

In other news... 6 hours man. The final stretch.
