Been a few days now since I’ve had my Fold.
My thoughts haven’t changed greatly since I first unboxed it. It’s a very cool device.
I think there are some annoyances that could become heightened over time. The biggest gripe I have is the inner display and the screen protector that’s factory fitted. It just never looks clean And collects every single little piece of dust - drives me insane.
The app situation isn’t that bad for me as it’s only X (twitter) and Instagram that I find bothersome. The workarounds aren’t too shabby, although there really should be optimised social media apps for these style of devices.
The camera performance of the Fold is fantastic. I see no difference at all to the output of this phone vs my 7 Pro.
Battery life has been great, zero complaints. Easily getting 6 hours plus SoT a day. I went straight to the 14 Beta when I got the phone (the sweet Lock Screen options got me
) so no idea whether the Beta has brought battery improvements as all the reviewers panned battery life. Not that I trust any of them. Scouring YT and the amount of click bait videos is pathetic. ”THE TRUTH”. “IPHONE USER SWITCHES TO PIXEL FOLD”. “PIXEL FOLD, I WAS WRONG ALL ALONG”.
Exhausting!
I think where I am struggling the most, though, is what benefit is this phone giving me over my 7 Pro?
It’s heavier, for one. I took my dog for a walk today and was wearing joggers (sweat pants for you American’s?
), and they were almost falling down with the weight!
Obviously the inner screen is the differentiator. But I am having to use the outside screen more for some apps that just don’t look good on the inner screen, which kinda of dulls the shine a bit.
In fairness, I haven’t watched much YT or streamed any tennis via Prime this week yet which is activity I normally do a lot of, and I know when I do get round to that I will find the Fold comes into its own more.
I also haven’t started reading ebooks on it yet, something I am excited to do as it is quite literally the perfect form factor for that.
I think it could be a case of using another phone for a few days and then finding that I miss the functionality that the Fold gives me. Or, I might just not be bothered about having a bigger screen. I definitely think it would be the former.
I’ve never been much of a multi-tasker with my mobile phones though. I don’t do apps in split screen side by side as I have absolutely zero need for it. Having said that, I have just opened X and Insta next to each other and that was pretty good as at least they’re in the correct resolution to run properly on the inner screen. The problem then though, is the phone forgets they’re paired if you close the phone and open one of the apps on the outer screen.
I thought Samsung Fold had an option to ‘pair’ apps to open together? Could have dreamt that.
I guess it’s little things like that which could make the experience a little better. The app situation is out of Google’s hands (their own apps are fantastic on Fold), but the QoL options for owning a Foldable need to be improved. Do I think they will? Nope. But lets see.
