Seriously. Plain android is great. Samsungs skins however, is not. It takes up a large part of the ram space and it lags horrifically. Not to mention the lag can be terrible at times. Samsung releases about 50 different types of phones which all come with bloatware. I played with my friends jailbroken Note 3. I asked him why he felt the need to jailbreak it. He told me because of the bloatware and samsungs software severely slow down his machine.

When people think android they think Samsung. Not google. Android is a fantastic OS which gets a bad rep because of Samsungs shortcomings.

If all these great "plain android" phones are so great, then where is their market share?

Google is trying to being more restrictive with Android requirements because of Samsung. I also think Samsung is trying to ditch Android. Both should part ways except money and marketing talks.

Shame too that Samsung gives Android such a bad rep.

HTC Sense
Asus Zen UI
Cyanogen Mod 11s
Xiaomi's MIUI
LG's latest custom skin
Oppo's Color OS
Meizu's Flyme
Huawei's Emotion UI

^^ All can look more visually impressive and more functional than TouchWiz. These are custom skins or ROMs too. But Samsung's popularity ruined it for all skins/ROMs already giving them all a bad name. Not just for Android.

There is nothing wrong with what Samsung provide and there is zero lag with my note 3 and I don't expect any with the note 4 either

I see apple in the op username so I sense nothing but a flame war agenda thread

Where is the logic? I assume you have owned a recent samsung device for awhile to make such assertions. I've had a Note 2 since November 2012, and it has had so little lag compared to they way you're portraying it it is a joke. Can you describe what kind of lag? Lag opening applications? I experienced minimal lag but disabled animations to make it even more instant. The Note 4 is already shaping up to be better than the iPhone 6 Plus hardware wise. I get it, many people can't stand touch wiz. I happen to like touch wiz, though it's been the only Android phone I've owned. When I play around with other skins on demo devices I never like them as much as touch wiz. Guess I'm just used to it! But while not being as optimized as stock (far from it) my end user experience hasn't been compromised performance wise even on the older Note 2 to warrant a switch to another manufacturer's launcher, nor come on MacRumors to complain about it.

I hope the folks at Google can go tell Samsung to get lost but that won't happen. Google should also be grateful that Android expanded like it did. And I don't mind seeing Samsung losing marketshare in China to smaller companies.

I always envisioned Android users to be more varied with their brand. I don't really want to see one dominant Android OEM. I always pictured it to be more of an even playing field.

Hopefully, Samsung can totally revamp TouchWiz the way HTC and LG did with their respective custom skins. I also would like Sony to give us a more consistent icons pack. Their rounded Sony apps looks out of place next to Android default apps. My fav icons pack is still from Sense. Not really a flat design. Just a right balance. Same with LG G3's and Oppo's Color OS.

No complaints about my Galaxy Note 3. It's what got me to fall in love with Android after only owning iPhones in the past. So your argument is.. weak. Be gone.

I have No bloat on my Alpha, neither did it come pre installed with any.

Likewise it is buttery smooth and as fluid in operation as the HTC M8

That is like saying, 'If iOS is so great, where is the market share?' wink wink

Some people are speculating the iPhone 6 has already moved 20 million units.

The only thing remotely close to those numbers is something by samsung or Chinese market domestic devices only.

What you don't see anywhere in the pack is a Nexus anything.

I also see multiple iPhone advertisements every day. I can't think of an instance where I have seen a Nexus 5 commercial.

What is iOS worldwide marketshare? 12-13%. Even in China it is fairly tiny. Apple only really stands out in 3 markets (Japan, US and UK). Everywhere else in the world (that doesn't subsidize phones, it has insignificant marketshare).
So again, I give you the wink wink. You know what I am saying. Apple is about to have a huge sales quarter, but even if they sold 70 million units in just this quarter alone, it would only move their worldwide market share needle 1%, which is still insignificant compared to Android marketshare.

P.S. Nexus phones aren't advertised. It isn't sold in stores and is considered a developer phone. Only word of mouth gets it any sales via the Google online hardware store. Not really fair to include 'Nexus' in your statement.

The 90s icons on Touchwiz is enough to drive me nuts. Every Samsung I have owned immediately got Nova put on top. It prevented my Samsung looking like a Fischer Price phone. Unfortunately these child like icons remained in the settings and notification.

Samsung cant design hardware nor can they design software. What do they well is pack their phones with the most Ram and fastest processors. This makes their phone look good to the masses.

There is no wink wink. Pure google phones have no traction, period. If there was anything even remotely viable about the notion there would be no shortage of firms tripping all over themselves to make it happen.

And there is no unified android, and it shouldn't be treated as such. There is only very dissimilar schisms of varying quality and experience. If this is not true, this thread, and many others that bitch about Skins, touchwiz and Samsung wouldn't exist at all.

Take any of those fractured pieces, which is what this entire thread is about, and pure google would be in the gutter, trailing so far behind touchwiz, Sense and whatever Xiaomi that you couldn't even see it.

And forget it, all these firms would murder their own mothers to be in Apple's insignificant position.

I don't know about anywhere else, but Nexus phones are definitely advertised and sold in stores and by carriers in the UK -

It's certainly not marketed as a "developer phone" over here...

Any tv commercials for the nexus 5? Billboards? Radio ads? You can't turn on the tv in the USA without seeing a samsung or iphone commercial.

That's it. My father who is 80 wouldn't know a Nexus if it hit him on the head. He would know what a Galaxy S5 is though - It's on TV, it's in magazines, it's on billboards. You can't sell (much) to people if they don't know you're there and this is where Samsung has scored. As I said in another thread selling a product without marketing is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know you're doing it but nobody else does.

It's no accident that Apple and Samsung are the two biggest names in handsets. They spend the most on marketing.

I prefer a vanilla android but with that said, the numbers don't lie. Samsung is a major player and they're doing something right. I don't see any handsets with vanilla android selling as well something from Samsung.

Sony's skin on the Z3 is pretty lightweight. No issues on it.

Touchwiz is okay but I feel it's a bit overbearing on my Tab S.

I've owned several Samsung products, currently have a Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 and lag is minimal and only in certain areas of the UI. Samsung still has the best display panels. I don't see Google ditching Samsung. That's their biggest vendor and we don't know for sure if Google wants to be in the hardware business.
