Because Apple is a hardware manufacturer first, they want multiple search engines to have a chance on the iPhone, iPad and Mac. Small wonder why they no to pre-installation of the Google app.
I suspect Apple did not want to give up control of user data.

I would leave Apple,
I just degooglized my devices as much as I could and I'm very happy
Just dealing with Apple Bugs here and there
Not using google just DuckDuckGo and sometime others . Sure they will get my infos too but at least I'm fair
and let all of them be my vultures...🦅🙄
Totally agree ... Goggle represents yet another awful platform that inevitably leads us to the world of disinformation along with general data theft and monetisation of that data. Inconprehensible how and why Apple would be involved in this 9or maybe not, eh?). First thing I do on any IT system: change to DuckDuckGo (well, at least until we find out what's wrong with that one).

“While Apple iPhones come with a number of Apple-created apps installed, Apple has never offered a pre-loaded third-party app, which is likely why the company did not accept Pichai's proposal.”

What about YouTube?

And Google Maps, I believe.

Edit: it seems many people have already pointed this out. Maybe the article should be edited, this line is getting as much attention as the headline.

Technically it is accurate. The preinstalled YouTube and Google Maps apps were created by Apple but used Google services.

This is a good point, I think. It never occurred to me that Apple probably did actually write the apps, but they are so 100% dependent on Google services in order to work, I never made the distinction. Article should still probably be edited, that line is getting too much attention.

Eh. I think it’s more about the fact that Google has made mortal enemies of Microsoft and Apple. Microsoft never got over them poaching all their talent when Google was first taking off like a rocket. And of course Steve Jobs (and therefore Apple) will never forgive Google for Android.

I doubt Apple cares at all about the health of the search ecosystem, but if they had the power to snap their fingers and make Google disappear they would probably do it. And not for any business reason.

At the peak of the social media era too, when both FB and Twitter were rapidly investing in news….

Seems kind of quaint and short-sighted now. They were going to be THE forms of identity and publishing on the internet. Run by megalomaniacs (and I’m counting pre-Elon.) What could go wrong.

Apple and Google have long had a search engine deal, with Google paying $18 to $20 billion per year to be the default search engine on Apple devices...
What's $15-20 Billion to Apple? No 3rd party software shipped on apple devices!
Well, Apple's net income was $99.803 billion for fiscal year 2022 and was $94.68 billion for fiscal year 2021.

The $18 billion to $20 billion that Apple gets from Google is pure profit since Apple doesn't have to do anything except make Google the default search engine. The Google payments therefore account for around 20 percent of Apple's overall net income. That's a lot.

It might be closer than we think

This idea has been floated for at least a decade. I can't see them doing it with the emergence of AI now potentially displacing search engines to a large extent.

Exactly.

They are also being paid this huge sum to default to the search provider that most people want to use anyway. Given the choice, most people would choose Google over everything else. It's an amazing deal for Apple.

Oy! Glad this never came to fruition. Google is the antithesis to Apple's focus on privacy.

Google also wanted Apple to disable background YouTube playback, so they did, and it became a paid feature of YouTube Premium.

It was great to be able to listen to a podcast with your display off or while using another app. Too bad Apple decided to remove it, against the interest of their users.
