I can get a flip phone at that point. It ain't that big of a deal to me.
Me, too. Frankly, I miss my StarTac, and the Razr I had after. Turns out, I quite dislike capacitive screens in general; ironically, I dislike phone calls even more. I recall texting with a dialing pad required a degree of committment. First world problems 😖.

“While Apple iPhones come with a number of Apple-created apps installed, Apple has never offered a pre-loaded third-party app, which is likely why the company did not accept Pichai's proposal.”

What about YouTube?

Or Google Maps. For years.
these were made by apple in collaboration with google and were exclusive to iOS, the YouTube app had a lot less ads

Those apps were made by Apple but they collaborated with Google to make those, just like the native Facebook/Twitter widgets back on iOS 6. There was never an app straight up developed by a third party loaded onto the iPhone.

Exactly.

They are also being paid this huge sum to default to the search provider that most people want to use anyway. Given the choice, most people would choose Google over everything else. It's an amazing deal for Apple.
You use Google for iOS search?? I don't know anyone else who even has it installed, much less by default.

It's the default in Safari. You don't need to install the Google app.
Good point. However, the thrust of the article is stated in the headline, "Google Wanted iPhones to Come Pre-Installed With Google Search App." The Google search engine in iOS is NOT an app. Yet.

I'm sure you mean well, but I don't click on ANY links posted in any forums. Ever. Neither should anyone.
Fair enough. If I had to guess, I’m assuming it’s a link to the Google Search app on iOS. Yes, Google has a browser just for searching on iOS, my mom used to use it all the time (why, I never was sure), similar to DuckDuckGo’s app. Why Google would’ve want it preloaded (other than more $), not really sure.

I’d say that surely Google’s not so short sighted that more money’s enough of a reason for them to push to have such an honestly underwhelming Google app as part of the default iOS install, but then I look at the mess that is Android messaging over the years, and now I’m not so sure!

Hovering over the link, it is an App Store link, but, of course, caution is always justified when it comes to random links on forums. Always has been!

I agree you shouldn't blindly click on links without verifying exactly where they are going. If the destination is disguised by URL shorteners, avoid. But if you can see for certain it's going to apple.com, you'll be OK.
Or you could just navigate to apple.com on your own…
