I just got off the phone with the FedEx IPD lady and she said my package needs to "clear customs" and that'll happen over the weekend. I asked if the package could be picked up and she told me Apple requires that they have to make the first attempt before any pickup attempts. Whatever all this means.

Maybe that they attempt to have it picked up before anyone else does? Uh... that's probably what you just said, but just trying to sound like I know something helpful.

Well... not to kick you while you're (sort of) down, but:

You're so lucky. My package is probably not being delivered because SB is far from LA.

I guess I don't mind waiting. Was hoping for delivery today though.

When did your estimated delivery date say on the FedEx webpage?

What can I say, you people are in luck. The semi-official Apple reseller here (Israel) doesn't have them in stock, nor have they any idea when they will be available.

Well we people who live in 'semi-apple' countries actually learned to live with it :)
And I don't even know when they will be available and I probably need to buy a 160GB HD and have them install it.

Talking about the hard disk, is the 160GB 7200rpm from seagate shipping yet? And how much more power do 7200rpm hard drives consume compared to its 5400rpm brethren?

The Core 2 Quad is a desktop chip, you're not going to see it in the iMac or MBP. It's probably going to be quite a while before a mobile version of a Core 2 Quad comes out.

I can't believe the rapid pace processors are moving at again suddenly. We were in a bit of a lul with the P4 chips there for awhile. Now Intel is back in the saddle again! I still remember the PII days when having a PII 450 meant you were king!

Boy, thank you for this, particularly the images.

It's pretty clear they have not addressed this issue with the display. Too bad. It's still a gorgeous display, it's just behind it's predecessors in a few characteristics.

Enjoy your new computer and thanks for your generous response.

It looks like my 17" is going to take 2 weeks! So much for 7-10 days. I wonder if the 3GB is slowing it down?

I'm waiting on a 17" stock. I ordered at 9am (central) on Tues, and I have an estimated shipping date of 11-7.

Anyone order a 17" that's shipped?

I think everybody agrees that:
We need more benchmarks!
Please benchmark with a clean Windows XP (only important drivers, and no "norton system slower 2007" ;) or other background applications) and include your system specs (processor, ram, vram, gpu clock speed, vram clock speed, hdd, used drivers)

Id like to see some results with:

Many thanks!

weeeee just got my 2.33 GHz, 120 HD, 2GB ram, matte, from the store. it's /awesome/.

thanks for keeping me company over the past few months, it was fun.

Awesome, they called me this morning and said they had gotten a single matte 2.16 GHz one in, but that more were coming in this afternoon. Sounds like that is one of them.

I don't have them holding anything for me, but I'm going after work and hopefully there will be one I can pick up.

  • 3dmark 06 (most important for me)

  • PCMark05 (only if you want)

Many thanks!

Personally I'm really curious about th e 3DMark05 and 06 scores for the base model with the 128 meg card. Curious if the X1600 in that model is clocked the same as the higher end model in particular.,

One problem with this program is that is PowerPC native, not universal binary, so they are showing you only how fast is Rosseta. It will be usseful to compare C2D with CD, but comparing OS X with WXP will be someting like... like compare Apples with Oranges ;)

I understand.. I just wanted to compare my system a CD to the new C2D.

I've been lurking around this forum lately and finally decided to make the purchase. My first Mac!! I've excited!

I've ordered the 2.16 MBP with 2GB ram.

Just a few questions from a Windows Users, if anyone has time to answer them..

1. In windows, i've mapped My Documents to a different partition, so that if i ever needed to reformat, I wouldnt have to backup my files. Is this necessary in OSX? I understand the linux filesystem doesnt have actual drives.

2. I've been a user of Outlook for the last 3 years. How can I import all my emails into .mail application?

Thanks! now to keep refreshing the order status page :)

UNIX based systems have drives, but not drive letters. You can "mount" a drive anywhere you like. So you could define /Users/mangohead to be the location where a particular partition resides. I'm not quite sure how you "map" My Documents to a partition in Windows, I guess some registry hack?

Anyway, you can certainly do it in OSX if you really want, although I would think you should be backing up your home directory somewhere anyway.

Ouch. If you can save your mail boxes into PST format, then google for PST to mbox convert, you'll find some ways forward. Then repent and never store your mail in a proprietary MS format again!

Well, I assume by drives you mean drive letters and no, the Unix/Linux/Mac OS X filesystems do not assign drive letters. They can still be on separate partitions, but it gets a little confusing at first coming from windows. Partitions are transparent to the filesystem so your idea of partitioning for safety does not work as well and (also) really isn't necessary. You won't be doing regular drive wipes with OS X.

There are import/export utilities for the mail applications.

According to those who have received their new C2D MBP's - this machine is silent!

I have a feeling I'm going to get fired for not doing any work - all I do all day is browse these forums.

You don't need to reformat OS X that often since files dont get fragmented (as fast) and there's no hogging of RAM or other slow-downs as the system ages. But if you want to format anyways, all u gotta do is copy your user folder to an external hard drive, format, copy it back, and you're done.

What do you mean by 'linux filesystem doesn't have actual drives'? If you're thinking that you will not see partitions under OS X, then you've misunderstood. But I'd recommend an external hard drive rather than partitioning your hd.

I don't really know a lot about outlook, but I think it's as simple as setting up other POP accounts. The first time you open up mail.app you'll be greeted with a setup guide.
And don't forget the letterbox plugin for mail.app, just google it, I'm too lazy to post a link :p

new to macs

I have been watching this forum since it began and 'am still waiting to pull the trigger for a 15" macbook pro... I guess I can only hold for one more day...
I wanted some confirmation that the 160 GB HDDs are really PMRs and not LMRs... I am thinking of spending more for 160 Gigs if they are PMRs... I don't need the extra 40 gigs but the PMR advantages are tempting...

Also, I am a ADC Student member... (First timer.. this will be my first ever mac.)
Will I get the OS X leopard when it comes out for free? They arent giving pre-release seeds to student developers but was hoping i'd atleast get a free update when it comes out... Can anyone confirm this please?

Thanks,
Pal :)
