Ouch. If you can save your mail boxes into PST format, then google for PST to mbox convert, you'll find some ways forward. Then repent and never store your mail in a proprietary MS format again!

I am not sure that a proprietary mbox format is any better in the long run. I have bounced between Mac and Windows for years and really wish I could move mail back and forth to suit the current system of choice. Though with Spotlight I am tempted to convert all mail to text files and be done with it.

I have been watching this forum since it began and 'am still waiting to pull the trigger for a 15" macbook pro... I guess I can only hold for one more day...
I wanted some confirmation that the 160 GB HDDs are really PMRs and not LMRs... I am thinking of spending more for 160 Gigs if they are PMRs... I don't need the extra 40 gigs but the PMR advantages are tempting...

Also, I am a ADC Student member... (First timer.. this will be my first ever mac.)
Will I get the OS X leopard when it comes out for free? They arent giving pre-release seeds to student developers but was hoping i'd atleast get a free update when it comes out... Can anyone confirm this please?

How much does it cost to become an ADC member (Student and normal)?

I read that ADC members get quite a lot of discount, like $1999 for the top end 15" model (which retails at $2499 normally)

PS: Oh yes, and I know that you must be some type of developer or know how to program to actually get your money's worth

100$ for student, and as far as i've read you pretty much don't need to know about programming to enter. But i helps :)

And yes the rebate is quite big.

I, as private person, not a student. Used a discount/promo-code apple sent me three weeks ago. The e-mail was about a sale on the normal Macbooks.

But I tried the code, and it worked, so I got about 120$ off - not much, but still I didn't expect it so that was nice. I used the saved money to buy a Vyper M2 sleeve. I'm also getting an inssurance from another company, that will cover: wear, fire, lightning, total-damage, repairs and best of all, it will cover damage caused by myself. Such as drops, spilled soda/water ect.

Btw:

I got the high-end 15" Pro with matt screen.

US $99 to be precise... My major is computer science, so I should say I am into developing... but u don't have to be one to get ADC membership.. u need to be enrolled at a school/university and should be over 18 yrs to get the student membership tho'

btw... anyone know if I'll get leopard for free when it comes out? And did anyone get their 160Gig MBP and can confirm if its PMR... please...

pal :)

Btw:

I about to go buy me a mouse for the new macbook and have my eyes on some different Logitech ones. Basically, one is the V500 wireless - it has great reviews and looks g r e a t - BUT I'm tempted to get a bluetooth one since the macbook will accept that.

Now, a bluetooth one will spare me the usb-connector sticking out off my machine - but won't the battery drain faster with bluetooth enabled all the time?

What is the name of the company you are using for the insurance? How much was it?

The discount is only for Select and Premier membership not student membership. Select is $500 and Premier is higher because it inclues WWDC attendance and more support.

I've used Outlook2Mac and haven't had any problems. I know there are other ways, but this little app was the easiest.

That's a Danish company (only selling to people living in Denmark)
The insurance is about 320$ for 3 years and 400$ for 4 years. A little steep price, but still one of the cheapest on the market in Denmark. (We have very different price-settings that US)

I think I will go for 3 years.

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mbox">mbox</a> isn't proprietary.

However, I really think the best solution (if you can) is to use IMAP rather than POP3 for accessing your email. It's easy to access from multiple machines, and it's stored on the server so you don't have to worry about it if you reinstall your OS. Of course, you have to either run your own mail server, or have an email provider who offers IMAP.

Student developers are entitled to ONE hardware discounts per Life... so as a student developer u can make just one Computer and a Display... even if you renew ur membership, you wouldn't get an other chance...

Well there is no way to know what their policies will be on the release of this operating system. HOwever the way Apple did it last year with Tiger was if you had a customer buy a machine in the 10 days leading to its release you could get Tiger for $10. There was a form you received and sent in with a copy of your receipt to them for it. That is the way it was done in my store and all other Apple retailers and resellers. WIll they do it again or change it? DUnno .. they always surprise us. I cant imagine you could buy now and get a free upgrade though eevn if your on the developer prgram. Now for Developers there may be deals for you guys on it but not as a consumer buying a computer now.

I called Apple to ask about leasing/financing options, but my small business wasn't qualified so they passed me to personal sales.

I was immediately offered discount pricing (didnt even have to ask!) The entry level MBP goes for $2199 CAD and the ram upgrade is $210 CAD. The sales person at apple offered me $1999 CAD for the notebook and $190 CAD for the ram upgrade!

I believe this is near education level pricing? I didnt have to provide any student ID or anything

Im also insuring mine at another company, AppleCare doesnt really cover anything :S... in Denmark we have what we call "Reklamationsret", which has to be on ALL products, for 2 years.. its sorta like what you get from applecare lol, only one year shorter, but for free :p..

ANYWAYS!! My question, as i live in Denmark too id like to ask, where will you get yours insured? Im buying mine through FONA (17" MBP), and getting their insurance, its cheaper than applecare nd it even covers theft =)..

Unfortunately i have to wait 14 days for it to even arrive at FONA, lol.. if im lucky i think :/.. in i live 250 km from the FONA where im buying it :p

I am superfly TNT pissed right now. "Yep your macbook is right here" "2.33 glossy, correct?" "Yep"

BZZZZZT wrong answer. That was NOT what they had in stock, one other store supposedly DID get it in stock and sold out. For 2500 dollars you should at least know what you are selling.

I am super unhappy right now. Two xp machines dead in a week and my wait for a macbook pro continues.

Okay, I got it from Apple.dk (has already shipped) and will get insurance from edbforsikring.dk. Fona's all risk is better (and cheaper) but my local Fona didn't know about the new C2D and I've heard great things about edbforsikring.
3 years is about 2200kr and 4 is 2600kr - I can also chose theft, but that's expensive and will only cover break ins. And my normal insurance covers that.

What will you be using your machine for?

I believe you must agree not to resell the hardware purchased through this plan.

Their T&C clearly calls for no re-sales.. keep resales aside.. they have a lot of restrictions like these machines should only be used for development and stuff like that... Don't know if you can (LEGALLY) do that...

anyone have any documentation or support that shows the 160gb drive is significantly faster than the 120gb? while i understand the 160 MAY use PMR, as opposed to LMR, im wondering what kind of real world benefits this will have. If you have any thoughts, opinions, evidence, please respond to this. thanks guys.

Well, mine came today.

Ordered Tuesday, noon. It shipped Wednesady I got it today at 10am.

Thanks to Apple and FedEx for the fast delivery.

My first MBP was DOA. This is try 2.

Don't notice any differences except that this thing is cool as a cucumber. I didn't consider the last one hot, normally warm, but thing has no heat.

Very nice...

I have a V500 and find it to be quite nice but ...

The Logitech driver (Logitech Control Center) has the nasty habit of inducing kernel panics if you remove the USB connector at just the wrong time. I explained the problem to Logitech but their Tech Support was clueless so I have no idea if their developers are aware of the problem.

I am still using the V500. I'm just not using the Logitech drivers. Mac OS X recognizes the mouse as a five button mouse. The scroll wheel works better using OS X's native support than it did using the Logitech driver. (I.e., the faster I spin the wheel, the faster I scroll.) Horizontal scroll also works!

The only feature I miss from the Logitech driver is the back button. (I haven't found a way to map a button to a command yet.)

I mapped the forward button to Exposé. (It's a lot easier to hit that button than it is to type fn+F9.)

I can't comment on how much Bluetooth will affect battery life as I've never turned it on.

Well, the T&C for Select and Premier members state that you can resell it but only after 1 year from the shipping date. (I don't know if Student members have a different T&C.)
