I REALLY need the space, and after reading this, getting the 200GB was a no-brainer:

When all the benchmarks start coming out and you feel real slow, don't worry. As long as a faster drive isn't next to yours you won't really notice it. It's like comparing TVs for hours only to find whatever you bring home looks great standing alone. :)

edit: didn't read he/she said they "REALLY need the space" so in that case it's a no-brainer for sure! (still early in the morning here)

From Anandtech.com:

"The MacBook Pro features Intel's 945 Express chipset, but opts for a faster external graphics solution rather than rely on Intel's integrated graphics. Being based on the 945 of course means that it features a dual channel DDR2-667 memory controller, but in order to take advantage of that you have to populate both SO-DIMM slots on the MacBook Pro. There is no performance benefit however to enabling dual channel mode; remember that the Core Duo only features a 64-bit wide 667MHz FSB, and without integrated graphics a single 64-bit DDR2-667 channel can offer enough bandwidth to saturate that bus. If the future MacBooks (non-pro) do ship with integrated graphics, you may want to install memory in pairs as dual channel will matter there.

To confirm that dual channel does nothing I ran a couple of tests with a single 1GB DDR2-667 SO-DIMM vs. 2 x 512MB DDR2-667 SO-DIMMs:..."

http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2740&p=4

The new C2D MBPs still uses the 945 chipset so it doesn't change that fact.

Thanks Jack--that was exactly the info I was looking for. And it makes since as the MBP max out at 3GB--so it's impossible to have max ram AND paired RAM.

I noticed too that the MBP 2.16mhz ships with not 512MBx2 but one 1gb chip. Which isn't paired. It's also nice that apple left open 2 slots for us.. :)

Can anyone who's received a 15inch MBP 2.16mhz confirm that there's one 1 GB chip?

previously you can wait for Leopard, then Santa Rosa, new chips are always around,...

There is always and will always be a reason to wait. My decision was not to wait any longer.:D

For the most part, gaming shouldn't be an issue on the Core Duo, Core 2 Duo at all. Seriously, the people saying, I can wait are always going to be waiting if there's something better around the corner.

Invariably, may I remind you about Intel's mobile chips....often times they have the same benchmarks as their bigger desktop chips...so.

I thought that I won't wait any longer also. But I don't want the MBP to be like the iMac last year, released Oct 12 and then jan 10 released a newer, better version with better graphics!! Just two months!!

Or 3 months if you start counting from 0 rather than -1

Core 2 Quad coming out on Nov 14!!

http://digg.com/tech_news/Core_2_Quad_Launches_November_2nd_Will_Be_Available_On_The_14th

Check it out

Man, now I'm having second thoughts on whether I should buy the Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros right now?
Maybe MWSF we'll be seeing some nice Core 2 Quads in iMacs, MBPs, MacPros. And then maybe Core 2 Duos for MacBooks and minis???

This is a real dilemma....

The Core 2 Quad is a desktop chip, you're not going to see it in the iMac or MBP. It's probably going to be quite a while before a mobile version of a Core 2 Quad comes out.

Stinger: Extra space is ALWAYS useful. I am going to be ok with the stock 120, but thats due to having external drives. The plan is to have a 10gb partition on the 120 for xp, the rest for osx. The xp install will be minimal and there just for games and my realaxiom, which will be placed on an external 100gb drive I already own, or a 500gb that I plan on owning.

In osx I will also have parallels for work related xp stuff when bootcamp won't cut the mustard.

If I were to get the 160, I would make the xp bootcamp partition 20-30gb.

Here is to hoping those 2.33s start arriving en masse in the stores today. I have 7 to go through...

One problem with this program is that is PowerPC native, not universal binary, so they are showing you only how fast is Rosseta. It will be usseful to compare C2D with CD, but comparing OS X with WXP will be someting like... like compare Apples with Oranges ;)

Ok, then I'll be happy buying my C2D MBP :)

C2D in Apple Stores

I'm going to get the MacBook Pro C2D to replace my iBook 1GHZ G4. I'm still debating on the matte or glossy screen. I've heard the matte ones are beginning to show up in the stores. Does anyone know if the glossy version is also in the stores as well?

I don't believe where I am - with a bunch of children?

Not all of us use a computer the same way - some are pure work, some are pure play, some are a little of both. It would be wise of you to be more tolerant of a person and hold back on your purile rants.

The quad core chip is basically two duos bolted together. It will probably slurp power like there's no tomorrow. Don't hold your breath yet for quad notebooks.

The bezel is still Aluminum not plastic.

MY MBP WAS IN IRVINE AN HOUR AGO! THAT'S 15 MINUTES AWAY FROM ME! :D

I'm still showing In-transit from Indianapolis. Hopefully you get it today.

Does it say en route to delivery? Can you give a screenshot of your fedex webpage?

No Santa Rosa is a chipset and it uses the same C2D's available now. Intel has no roadmap for Quad cores on a mobile platform - it will probably be at least year before you see quad core on a laptop.

Hmm... now that you mention it, it doesn't. But there's still hope that when I get home at 1pm, it'll be there, right?

I just got off the phone with the FedEx IPD lady and she said my package needs to "clear customs" and that'll happen over the weekend. I asked if the package could be picked up and she told me Apple requires that they have to make the first attempt before any pickup attempts. Whatever all this means.
