This weekend is gonna be off the hook in SB. The thing is my friend who is buying my current computer is coming up this friday and I would like to have a computer before I hand it off to him.

P.S. Where in So Cal do you live? If you're in IV this weekend hit me up.

That friend might end up liking the C2D MBP more and decided against buying the old one from you! LOL :p

Two words: Isla Vista. I'm not going this year, but I have a couple of friends who are spending a long weekend there haha. And you only think you need a computer this weekend... but really, when are you gonna have the time to play with it? :D

Edit: I'm in Huntington! I'm spending the weekend here though... a few friends are having parties and who am I to pass up friendly faces?

This is a good friend that I trust. He gave me his word. Plus I'm selling a Black MB with 100GB HD and 1 GB RAM for $1000.

I just ordered the 15" 2.33ghz, 160hd version of the MBP. How much faster do you think it will be than my current 15" 867mhz G4 with 768mb of ram?

The difference will be staggering.

Everything, from the GPU to FSB to SIMMS are significantly faster.

You're in for one heck of a treat.

From Anandtech.com:

"The MacBook Pro features Intel's 945 Express chipset, but opts for a faster external graphics solution rather than rely on Intel's integrated graphics. Being based on the 945 of course means that it features a dual channel DDR2-667 memory controller, but in order to take advantage of that you have to populate both SO-DIMM slots on the MacBook Pro. There is no performance benefit however to enabling dual channel mode; remember that the Core Duo only features a 64-bit wide 667MHz FSB, and without integrated graphics a single 64-bit DDR2-667 channel can offer enough bandwidth to saturate that bus. If the future MacBooks (non-pro) do ship with integrated graphics, you may want to install memory in pairs as dual channel will matter there.

To confirm that dual channel does nothing I ran a couple of tests with a single 1GB DDR2-667 SO-DIMM vs. 2 x 512MB DDR2-667 SO-DIMMs:..."

http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2740&p=4

The new C2D MBPs still uses the 945 chipset so it doesn't change that fact.

Hey JackSYi:
Since you seem to know a lot about the RAM in MBPs, can I put 2 sticks of 2GB RAM into the new MBPs?

Thanks :)

I think technically you can. But there might be 2 obstacles:

1. The actual 2GB modules might be slightly thicker so two might not physically fit.

and

2. The MBP chipset only supports up to 3.2 GB of Random Access Memory (and probably Apple put a cap on 3GBs). So it would be pointless to put in 4GBs. But I could be completely wrong and there is a hack.

I'm confused about the iSight LED - Brian says it "shines through the plastic". So does that mean the bezel is plastic? Has it always been that way on a MBP? I have a PBG4 and I like the aluminium bezel.

(presumably a plastic bezel might help with wireless reception if the aerials are in there though...)

The LED light is actually not just one hole but many holes. So it looks invisible when off.

Compared to:

The bezel is still Aluminum not plastic.

I have to disagree 100%. I love the Dells and they are much less expensive.

The problem with the 2407 is that the panel is only 6bpp instead of 8bpp. I have a 2405 at work and one at home I bought for myself and love it over my 23" alum ACD that I might sell with my PB once my C2D gets here. I'd never buy a 6 bpp panel.

Pretty Random...

Hi, a seemingly random question for those guys that have ever bought anything online-
When the Macbook Pro arrives (for instance) does it come with paperwork with the price on it? Or is that kept discreet (like in the box?) Only reason I ask is that Im ordering to my parents house and I dont really want them to see the price. I will be opening it though.
Cheers!

That anandtech article is quite enlightening. Did you notice the G4 vs Core Duo performance tests? When the author disables one of the cores, the G4 at 1.5 ghz was keeping pace with the 2 ghz core solo. It even beat it in the QT encoding test. That's just amazing. Though I'd imagine with one core off the Core Solo is drawing less power.

And I used to think the bus speed on the G4 was a huge bottleneck, but it seems to do ok in its latest form. I'm pretty impressed. I wonder how well it stacks up to a Merom with a core disabled?

I ordered the high end 15" but now consider if I should upgrade it to 160GB?
I will only be using it for surfing, music, writing and a few games. Apple says that 120 is more than enough and I don't doubt that.

But will the 160GB be more quiet as someone says? I don't REALLY need the extra 40GB but if it has other pro/cons (heat, noise, faster, slower, heavier ect) I would like to know them. (Fast since my order ships soon)

Thanks

The specs for the PMR 160gb drive state that it is more quiet. Then again we still do not have proof that you will get a pmr 160gb drive because there is a 160gb lmr version and it might be the one apple includes.

Thanks - If I order the 160 and it turns out to be the lmr - then it won't be louder, hotter or have other cons compared to the 120 lmr right?

If not, it a win/win situation for me and I will get the 160, only "risking" that it might be more silent but not worse that the 120 in ANY way right? (160 won't run hotter ect?)

About to change my order here.

hard drives are really quiet already, you cant hear them unless you take it out from the MBP and actually put your ear right up to the casing!

Considering that you just surf the web and all that stuff, you might as well go for the 200GB 4200rpm since it'll be a really good battery saver, and you have room for all those torrents to boot! :)

I will also be gaming a bit, but 200 is too expnsive for me, it's 120 or 160.

Considering what the older MBP sounded like (or lack thereof) I seriously doubt you will notice the difference. I only stated the specs were that the drive itself was supposedly more quiet. In practice I bet the two will be almost identical with the exception of a couple clicks that you wouldn't notice anyways.

Speed is supposedly comparable.

Great, so noise isn't an issue. (40GB extra won't make the machine hotter right?)

How much of my 120 will OSx and windows take up?
Beginnng to think I should opt for the 160, just to have the extra space.
